Diction refers to the choice of words. Remember it by thinking of a DICTIONary - a book of words. So why has the poet made use of those specific words? Or how does that word contribute to the meaning?

What is the irony of the poem

There is irony in the title in that usually a break during a term ("mid-term") is a holiday and a joyous occasion. However, in this instance, the break will not be pleasant for the speaker as his young brother has died. Being at home with mourning family members and the corpse of his brother upstairs will be a traumatic experience, not an enjoyable break from school.
