American Freestyle canoeing is the art of paddling a canoe on flat water with perfect control of its movements. The canoe is usually leaned over to the side to help the boat turn sharply and efficiently and paddle strokes are taken on either side of the canoe depending on the individual move. Balance, paddle placement and turn initiation are a few keys to this control. Since the movements seem dance-like, some practice this art timed to music, which is the ultimate in control.

Marc Ornstein's "devil may care" style and flashy tricks are perfect examples of why people are saying the sport is becoming a shadow of what it once was. Though I'm not a fan of Marc and his "hotshot" persona, if it brings more young people into the sport I'm all for it.

The poise. The majesty. The laser focus in Marc's eyes was betrayed only by the grace in his every paddle stroke. Exquisite choice of paddle, I might add. Most of you will recognize it as a Swiss Ash. Marc had it turned out especially for this event by legendary paddlesman, Lars Ramuk. The craftsmanship is second to none as you can see by the way it cuts through the green-billed water with all the old world charm of a Plumed Stirlite whilst rivaling the propelling power of the modern Two-Pieced Joshua Bolts of Nigerian fame. However, the paddle, for all it's quality, is but an after thought if it weren't for the man wielding it. You see, Marc doesn't just paddle with an oar, but with his heart. Gently stirring the pond just as one's seat of emotions might be stirred by a tender moment or a bittersweet parting. For a few brief moments on this special evening Marc commanded the hearts and minds of every man, woman, and child on this mortal coil. And just as quickly as he stole from us our very will, he returned it, in humble supplication. Thank you, Marc. We owe you a tremendous debt of gratitude for sharing with us the maritime beauty of your life's work. Glide on, good sir. Glide on.

I connect with you Mr. Brown. I've shared a similar experience. Not sure if it's the soft evening light, or the placid water, or the sight of a tuxedoed man in a canoe, gently stroking to his beloved lady in red. In any case, like the artist himself, and you Mr. Brown, I find myself in a 'crimson trane'. And, much like Mr. Ornstein, and you as well Mr. Brown, seems that I too am a 'master in corn'.

"How is there a crowd for this?" you ask . I believe it went a like this: "Hey everyone, come watch me canoe dance!" "do what now?" "Canoe dance, you know I dress up in a tux, play soft-rock ballads from the '80s and spin the canoe around in circles" "oh this I got to see, I'm bringing my camera." --------- Separately, I kind of want to watch the made-for-tv movie that includes a training montage of Marc out on the pond trying over and over again to perfect his moves, falling out of the canoe over and over, getting frustrated, breaking paddles, and getting tough-love advice from a former champion who's career was cut short by a canoe injury.

I want to see the 30 for 30 on Marc Ornstein’s career. He’s in his prime here, but injuries, drugs, groupies and the pressure of the competitive canoe circuit would derail his promising career.
@jimreily7538
@jimreily7538 4 жыл бұрын
Oh he's had an incredible career. The great Ornstein-Jacoby battles that defined his early years. The so called "Frogmen" incident (which was just media trying to destroy a rising star in my view). Echoes of the later "Invisible Motorboat" stuff. He shut them up with the Margaret River series. One of the most beautiful sequences of freestyle since Findler, or even Darnsberg (hints of the early days of the sport, with grace and poise that, as the Freestyle Canoeing Essentials said at the time, "redefined the sport"). And of course, the Infamous "Invisible Motorboat" incident - people just couldn't accept that the Margaret River series, and five or ten years after which he just dominated this sport, could possibly be conducted by pure skill. (But remember, Ormstein lives on a river, he trains 14, 15, sometimes 16 hours a day; he's got an entire corporation of planners, agents, sponsors, all that stuff, built from his own sheer ability). Fiction became fact when it was revealed that Jacoby and others were in fact using tiny hidden devices (not motors but basically water pumps) to orient their crafts, allowing them to appear far more dextrous and agile than they were. That was a real scar on the sport. It took down Jacoby and others and the whole "Punks with Pumps" thing made it clear - the public will not tolerate that type of nonsense from freestylers. Jacoby perhaps might emerge forgiven someday, but who knows. Let me be clear though: nobody ever proved Marc Ornstein had done anything wrong. He was never found to be using pumps, motors or anything except talent and dedication. Then, over the past decade, Ornstein reached new heights - the sequences/partnership with the great ballet choreographer Nizhnikov, who Mr Ornstein credits as "one of the true unsung masters" of the sport, and of his recent successes. Hard to see what anyone could do, to beat Ornstein, today in his current peak physical and mental conditioning. I think the real question is being asked right now by freestyle canoeing experts - what will Marc Ornstein do next, to outdo Marc Ornstein ?
@Ptrm594
@Ptrm594 4 жыл бұрын
@@jimreily7538 Excellent summary. Massive Ornstein fan here. I hated Jacoby even before he was revealed to be a cheat. I think the Invisible Motorboat/Punks with Pumps stuff actually showed just HOW GOOD Ornstein is ! Jacoby was doing everything with hidden technology and Ornstein STILL outdid him. All Ornstein needed was a canoe, an oar, and a piece of music. The best athlete in the history of professional FSC by FAR.

But just look how graceful the transition from his Middle Bay Lean-In to Lufftenschatz Roll, second only to 1731 French champion Jean-Framboise Lajolie. Impeccable execution. Rafferty, Marc informed us earlier in an interview that the true reason he got into freestyle paddling was after his upper body developed prematurely as he spent years paddling down the Ohio River to escape his disciplinary father who was very strict on choring and recounting to his first born son how life was like in the glory days of Nordic Lore. A true warrior indeed. Remarkable journey, Rafferty We will return with the great grand niece of 1925 Rookie of the Year Henrietta Spillding, Bertha Shaw in the style of Neo-Classic Battersea paddling with her musings to the sounds of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs."
