I wonder if drilling the holes where you did reduces the efficiency of the unit a bit. The slinger fan is supposed to have some water to sling onto the coils, and having them down so low could prevent enough of that happening. Judging by what you said early on in the video, there was too much, but I would now worry if there was too little.

I have another inquiry for your engineer brain. So far unable to get an answer after hours on the phone with Midea. I was on the phone today with 4 Midea people, and my case was shared with several others. Outside my home (Florida) it might be 95% RH & 95 degrees & I'm trying to make the inside 45-50% RH & 70 degrees. It costs a LOT of energy (PV & storage) to cool and dry the air like that. The room with this unit is always +10% RH compared to other places in my home (measured with accurate SensorPush sensors). I taped a huge lawn bag over the unit and, with barely any breeze blowing outside, the bag fills & empties as if the window was raised an inch. The bag is big enough to stuff a body in there. My installation has zero air leakage around the unit since this is what I do. There is a HUGE air gap inside the unit through which condensate water flows out, and a gecko entered a few weeks ago. Maybe it's a tube or maybe it's an inch across the entire width of the unit where it gets thin and the window closes over it. I haven't taken the unit apart to look yet. The condensate has to flow out via some pathway. We have various methods of sealing this huge gap in Net Zero Energy homes (NZE) homes ---- P-traps, flappers, etc. Regardless how efficient this unit is, if this bad design creates/allows the entire room to leak to the outside in a few minutes through a gaping hole, I'm throwing away 50% of the "efficiency" Midea claims. That is an insane amount of direct air leakage to the outside. After about an hour of talking to various people at Midea, I was finally directed to tech support where the guy said, "maybe" when I asked if this was tech support, like he was hiding in a closet somewhere. He ultimately told me the unit "did not leak" and hung up on me. Hilarious!! We're measuring & compiling data with this project. We are not guessing. This is a huge leak. Probably the largest leak in my home. With the taped bag on the AC unit, my Midea Cube dehumidifier is working very little today, although it's pretty high RH outside right now. This evening, the room in which the Midea AC unit sits is LESS humid than the rest of the home (very rare) because the leakage is so much less with a lawn bag over it. So the air conditioner was leaking humid air that the dehumidifier has to dry out. Kind of a clown show. Plus, the water from the fan splashing back into the interior of the unit is a testament to just how readily the inside air is sharing with the outside through this gaping hole. The air leak needs to be pretty open for splashing to get from the outside to the inside. Have you noticed this huge air leak in your unit? We build Net Zero Energy homes (NZE), and it depends entirely on cutting the fat & eliminating leaks and waste. Since I've bagged the unit, the entire home is now the same RH. Amazing!! It was that simple. If you know "ACH50" (Air Changes per Hour @ 50 pascals of pressure), this room has to be 2-4. The room (with no wind blowing) is probably 5-10 Pascals today. It's crazy that Midea have not addressed this. Perhps you can check your Midea & see for yourself if your Midea also has this huge leak. It seems to just be a design flaw. I'd like to see you do a video on that. I've searched all day and have found nothing. If you're living off-grid, the air leak is using up the production of several of your panels and/or kWh of battery storage.

I've heard that the water spraying back on the coils helps with the efficiency but it also creates the problems people have. How much efficiency is lost on the unit after making this change? It looks like you have a wattage meter hooked up so I'm assuming you are tracking that?

The main reason we got a new AC is due to the moldy air issue with my old AC (a different brand). I definitely don't want my new Midea (12000 BTU, U shape, bought Summer 2024, with the blue drainage plug) to have mold and mildew issues anytime soon. At the same time, I don't want to worry about any potential issue with overheating the coil (the manual specifically mentioned "don't remove the drainage plug while in operation). So I called Midea customer service about this dilemma on a Saturday morning. They answered the call right away. There was no wait (amazing!). Their recommendation is keep the drainage plug there but drain the water once every week. It sounds reasonable. I'll monitor and see if this is sufficient to prevent mold growth. I live in the south. It is very humid here. By the way, they also told me don't tilt it more than 1/4 bubble. Otherwise it will cause some issues, too. Hope this helps. Please share if anyone has tried this (keep the plug there but drain once a week) and how it works for you.

Best window A/C ever for solar powered home. I have the same unit and I noticed there is a hole, halfway up, on one side of the outdoor portion of the unit where water will drain out if it gets too full. However, the outside mount bracket tends to block the hole opening, leading to a back up of condensation into the front part of the unit. Many window units now lack drain holes and use the water build up for the fan to sling and cool the condenser. But if I have to choose between a hot condenser and black mold, I’m breaking out my cordless drill like you did! 👍⚡️🤠

After the coil cleaner does its job, 15 minutes, start spraying the inside coil from top to bottom with the bleach bottle. Dry up and water and debris inside the unit with paper towels and repeat until the coils are clean. Let dry for a few hours and then let the unit run. Your DC question is my exact question. The Midea is called an inverter air conditioner. Does this mean that the house AC is converted to DC? If so at what specs? Our central air is set at 76, the window Media at 76 in the open floor plan living room. Have the auto turned off and on low. Usually under 100 watts used, but have seen rarely 300 to 400. Just purchased 2 of the 12000btu models to run on my EcoFlow solar system in emergencies. Did you drill the holes in the corners from inside or is the condenser far enough away to drill from outside? Subbed.
@TheKiloG699 ай бұрын
I would advise taking the top of the AC unit off so you can see the coils and avoid damaging them I did damage one of my units doing this. Lucky for me I was able to repair it.

Hi! Mine needs the Freon recharged. Can that be done with this unit?
@Stevesbe5 ай бұрын
If it needs freon you got a leak probably in the coils somewhere
@j.casalino4 ай бұрын
There's a 5-year sealed system warranty, so if it failed or leaked you might want to submit a warranty claim. They might try the "there's only a one year warranty on the unit" garbage, but it's printed in the manual. Mine started throwing code EL 0C and just sending pictures of the unit in failed state and the serial number with a copy of the invoice was enough to get the claim pushed through.

Did drilling the 2 drain holes help keep it from building up mold? I got mine in late August. I live in SW Florida. Just looked in mine and see mold starting on the blue fan.
@TheKiloG69 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely.
@hillybilliescrypto.4965 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I just had a new 8k btu show up. I put a hole in the cooling fins on the left bottom corner. That first one is toast now. I am not that worried. It was full of slime and mold. I just put the new one in it's place. I will just pop a hole on the right side.
@hillybilliescrypto.4965 Жыл бұрын
Thanks again. Just put 3 holes in this new one. Sucks to be out a few hundred dollars. But I am more concerned about the family's health. That 1st unit was absolutely packed full of mold and slime in the part that's outside.
@TheKiloG69 Жыл бұрын
Be sure to take the cover off on the rear of the AC unit so you don't hit the cooling lines. That said I also damaged my first unit 2 years old by unclogging the holes I had put in it not very carefully and puncturing the line. I Used silver sodder to close the hole on damaged the unit. Used my hvac vacuum pump to evacuate the system down for 15 minutes,then filled it up with a can of 134 auto freon back up and running. 1 12 oz can of freon worked great.

Any error codes?
@mitchdenner97435 ай бұрын
No error codes. Purchased a 15,100 btu fridgidare at a scratch and dent place for $125, new never used , had the grounding prong on the plug broken off. Cut the one off the midea ( exact same rated) and two minutes of soldering later had a working a/c. Fridgidare for the win! Screw midea and their 1 year warranty. 🖕

From what I can see via a flashlight, they have at least one screw that is steel and it rust, why in the heck would they put a steal screw in there, this is typical ....... stuff

Anyone taking the fan out completely to clean it and/or do a motor replacement, and wondering how to get up on the underside of the blades, I used two different tools. One was a small diameter faucet brush I got at a local hardware store, it works on a lot of the gaps but some of them are just too tight. You can also use the GUM Proxabrush go-between dental brushes. They are very small, however you will likely have to make at least two passes on every blade because of this. For replacement bearing grease, I'll be using Super Lube synthetic multi-purpose grease when I re-assemble it. I've done all the modifications in this video except I will probably leave the fan grill in, haven't decided yet. It's easy enough to rip out later anyway. Hoping to get better results this time. My current unit I took apart before, but couldn't get under the blades and waterpik wasn't really working well for me, and still got horrible smell despite cleaning everything else while disassembled. So hoping this time works better, with a different unit I had to take apart to replace a noisy motor on anyway.

Hey just want to let you know. The water drip hole that you drilled in the bottom of the AC. Actually is something you really really don’t wanna do. And I’ll explain why. On purpose this window unit pools ac runoff in a area to be kicked up by the condenser fan misting the condensor coils making them more efficient in removing heat. Kind of like spraying your outside condenser coil with a garden hose when it’s hot out. Same concept. So I highly recommend that you plug that hole some silicone. These AC units resigned to mist the condenser coil.
