Just before this interview we interviewed Chris Cross for 3CR, a community radio station when they were in Melbourne. It was at an old Melbourne hotel with gardens and a grand foyer. I recall asking Chris, now that they are so successful as musicians, and also financially, did all of their problems disappear? He replied, “No my problems have just become more sophisticated.” That was an insight he shared which seems simplistic but it was a gesture of faith and considerate. He was rather aloof and detached because we were just a community station. But it waa layered with deep meaning I felt at that time. He looked fresh from the shower and was somewhat indifferent to the band’s future. They broke up in 1987/88. Wiki says he left the music to become a psychotherapist. Which would explain his honest simple answer staying in my head all of these years.

I’d certainly agree with Midge on the John Foxx era Ultravox LP’s, certainly “Systems of Romance” is the best LP they ever made with John Foxx

I’m guessing Quartet was the album that Midge was referring too?

The Japanes audience thing isn't really true, or at least not when I was there (20 years ago). I went to a few gigs and, though they didn't get up immediately, it only took a minute and the reserve/politeness slipped away.

Maybe not relevant musically, but when the Nolans hit Japan in '78(?) they went *wild*. Mobbings, security: mind you, they did outsell the Beatles there.
