There's another option too. I think that little blue MIDI IO box ought to be able to connect to a Roland UM-ONE as well (these are somewhere around $50). This can then connect to any device with a USB port that can run any suitable MIDI emulator. For DOOM in particular I could definitely tell the difference between the real hardware & emulated. The real hardware seemed to have a rolloff on each note that sounded really nice, while the emulated version did not & did not sound as nice as a result. Am not sure if that could come down to setup or what but it's notable. Is there any reason the MISTer itself couldn't emulate the MT-32 itself for DOOM without issues? I noticed you didn't do a comparison for that for some reason.

The MiSTer's ARM CPU should be able to do a good job running Fluidsynth and producing the same audio as the MT-32 in the case of Doom. Not sure how the de-10 nano's DAC compares to the one in the MT-32, but the software generating the music would be identical. It may suffer from the occasional skip or slow-down though.

@retrobitstv2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't appear that the midilink updater script creates any init.d startup files on the underlying Linux OS, it just drops some binaries in places. I haven't dug any deeper than that, but my guess is, if you don't set your core to use local midi, the binaries won't get executed. If you remove /sbin/midilink and /sbin/mlinkutil manually, plus the /media/fat/linux/mt32-rom-data/ and /media/fat/linux/soundfonts/ directories, that'd probably be clean enough.

@WalrusFPGA3 жыл бұрын
the pi wasnt stuttering in this video, that was the ARM processor on MiSTer, which is generally only used for IO and linux/menu stuff, not really powerful enough for proper munt emulation. pi 3a+ or greater will have no issues.

I've only watched up to 6 mins so far, but I think you should explain the "why" in extensive detail someone should use a MiSTer vs just regular software emulation? Regular software emulation for MIDI and games is already great! Most of us likely have a 2nd laptop hanging around that would work perfectly to be our MIDI sound module if we wanted it for games or something else. I bet a small Windows netbook or tablet would work fine as an external sound card for vintage PC games that require an external MIDI, if there aren't already easy software emulations people can run right from the games on a single PC for doing this. On my software Apple ][ emulation for example (no FPGA box required), with in the popular Apple ][ emulators, I can emulate the Mockingboard sound card which was optional for Apple ][ games. In my Amiga emulation (which is clock cycle accurate with no FPGA needed), the emulators are able to provide all kinds of optional hardware devices built into the emulators. I've been heavily into software emulation since 1985 on the Amiga, and followed it to the PC platform where it has dominated since the mid 90s. I've built 4 MAME machines, and and am a musician running many software synths. I've yet to find a use for a MiSTer as I'm perfectly satisfied with software emulation on many fronts. I see people running classic games on a MiSTer, with an LCD screen. And they think that is authentic! Don't they know how critical the CRT is? I think many of the MiSTer people have all the wrong priorities. Software emulation can be great, and even clock cycle accurate and has been under heavy development for a very long time, getting perfected. But please explain to me, I'm happy to listen, and open minded. I have around 25 arcade machines with several custom built emulators & dedicated games, dozens of soft synths I use extensively but also more than a dozen hardware synths. I haven't needed FPGA yet to do what I want. Maybe there could be an odd by game or something that was poorly emulated and better emulated for MiSTer? Generally, recreations are only as good as the people making them. That's why I know a handful of people years ago that switched back to PC emulation and sold off their MiSTer when they felt software emulation did a better or equal job of the task.
@rsmith022 жыл бұрын
Sold off the Mister years ago? It's not that old a project. You have a new wave of developers who are maniacal about hardware accuracy, going as far as to decap chips to get the exact schematics. Many emulators have stagnated over the past decade at good enough, but not really accurate. Still there's no wrong answer and I am using FPGA for my favorite consoles and emulation for others I am less particular about (including Apple II).
@n8goulet2 жыл бұрын
@@rsmith02 It could have been the previous version. Generally if I find emulation not to accurate (games or synths), it's not because the accuracy isn't there, it's because some part of it isn't finished. This would be no different with FPGA. The products are only as good as the people making them, and what they've figured out with reverse engineering them.

@@n8goulet The biggest difference between MiSTer and Software EMU, I feel in Arcade games (and Consoles) is controller latency... for example: Running BSNES/HIGAN on my 9900k in the highest accuracy mode compared to the MiSTer SNES core on Mario Kart... world of a difference, my lap times are way better on the MiSTer and compare to me on my SNES... where with BSNES/HIGAN it is way more difficult for me to get the same lap times... both are running on the same screen with the same controller (8bitDo SN30 pro @ 8Bitdo Wireless Bluetooth Adapter), so it's not CRT vs LCD...
@n8goulet2 жыл бұрын
@@mstreurman I mainly play classic arcade games from the 80s, late 70s and occasionally early 90s. I haven't noticed any latency issues with the controllers what so ever in the hundreds of games I play. However, most of the games are a bit older than Mario Kart. A wireless connection could potentially add latency issues. I have 4 custom built MAME machines all running 19" arcade CRT monitors and vintage arcade controls like Wico leaf-switch joysticks & buttons for example. As for latency with MIDI on PC's, it's very rarely been an issue. I've been using soft synths on laptops with my bands for 25 years. If my timing was off, my bands would let me know. My soft synths on the Amiga in the mid 80s could have latency issues. It wasn't an issue with MIDI, but rather than synths themselves as some really taxed the hardware. If someone experienced latency using MIDI with their PC soft synths today, it usually means they need a more powerful system to run them. Not that they need to run MIDI via MiSTer.

You'll need a short length USB3 cable for proper functioning through MiSTer's userIO port. visit the mt32-pi wiki to see a list of known good cables. Many of them are not good enough quality to carry the signal with stability, so this part is important. You'll also need to modify a couple things in the ini (again, info in the wiki), maybe just make a second ini for when you use MiSTer, to quick swap. So it's slightly more complicated than "just plugging it in", but not very.

This is because I²C is not really designed to be used over lengths of cable, and so signal degradation can occur due to capacitance in the cable and/or signal reflection. If you experience a corrupted OLED screen display or erratic synth switching behavior (e.g. as in issue #59), try a shorter cable.
