I had never heard of Midlake before last night. I heard "The Young and the Old" on my local NPR station and felt like there might be something special about this band; I was right. They are absolutely mesmerizing. They remind me a lot of The Shins (vocally), The Mars Volta (FX/Noise), and sometimes even hints of Sigur Ros, Bonobo or My Morning Jacket, instrumentally speaking. Shame on me for not having heard of them previously.

Just played my fave prog album of '73, Selling England by the Pound by Genesis and yeah there are echoes, but this is one hell of a band, no tribute act. One of the best of 2013 IMHO.

'The Trials of Van Occupanther' is a modern classic hands down, no valid argument. 'The Courage of Others' was a place that I tried so hard to go but I couldn't follow Tim Smith on that journey and it turns that the rest of the band couldn't either. Surprised and disappointed that they couldn't work things out and emerge intact for their fourth album. However, I have to say that I think this record is a superb, mesmeric multi-layered masterpiece. I hope that one day Tim can find his inner peace musically and join the band adding more blissful master strokes to only add to an already mighty list of classic songs.

If I must give in to tendency to compare, I hear Floyd and Genesis influence especially in the keyboard work, , , the vocals sound a bit like Alan Parsons, , ,

I would tend to say more moody blues, King crimson than anything else. The heavy guitar solos though I can see what you mean, especially on the slide work with all that reverb.

This is a sweet album. I never heard of them as far as today and I have listened this album 3 times already. This is a great proposal, with very full rich roomy atmospheric sound. I just feel that it needed something in the middle to boost it up, it starts so high with Antiphon - The Old and the Young, but then it feels its going emotionally down, even tho you can appreciate the engineered parts and the improvisation capabilities of the band and that's the final taste you get when the album finishes.

Love it! Sometimes I hear Floyd and sometimes Alan Parsons, but to be sure, that 5 note riff on The Old &the Young is very reminiscent of Moody Blues "The Other Side of Life" and a great new twist to that sound. This album is a breath of fresh air from "the courage of others".

I am a huge fan of this band absolutly...and I just have a slight non preference for Eric's voice for lead. I find it flat and uninteresting. I am sorry to say this but I stop each time and loose interest.. I have huge respect for them and please excuse my opinion as i really want to love this. I have their last albums on perpetual repeat!.

The reason why I like the vocals on this album is precisely because they're not at the forefront of the music. It gives the listener space to appreciate the atmospheric sounds of the instruments.
@johndeere370210 жыл бұрын
first i thought it was the same singer, then i realized eric is the new main vocal, ex back vocal, and the smith guy (ex main vocal) left the band. Dude if you think eric's voice is flat and uninteresting what did u think of smith's? Eric's voice has weight and substance, he puts some balls in it, and yet retains the mystical and dreamy feel. Whereas smith's was ultimately impotent and drained of all lifeforce, (i exaggerate slightly ofcourse) as if sang by a person who has permanently given up on life
