What Cameron and Jackson did = Use AI to upscale 2k 1080p scans to 4k What Fincher did = scan the OCN at 8K, made some visual fixes and then downsampled to 4k. These are not remotely the same

If I remember correctly, the outer sleeve on that DVD looked basically the same as the 4K you were holding up, solid black with the same title design. It's one of the DVDs I regret not keeping when I upgraded to Blu-ray. I love the look of the new Digipak, but I went with the Steelbook because I wanted a tray disc holder. The Steelbook looks pretty nice in person, though. The movie itself looked and sounded great to me. Can't wait for 4Ks for The Game and Fight Club!

David Fincher (about the 8K restoration of Se7en): "It is what it is, warts and all. And some of it is spectacular and some of it is stuff that I would change or fix today, but I didn't want to mess with that. There's a lot of imperfections, there's a lot of things that you just don't see on film. When people say they love the look of film, what they're talking about is chaos, entropy, and softness. Now, of course, we live in an HDR world where you get those kinds of very deep, rich, velvety blacks for free. And we had to negotiate what to fix or not. So we attempted to go back in and fix to make it match. And kind of repaint stuff and just take out water spots and little edge flashes. And some if it is impossible to get it to match, certainly by today's standards. So there was a lot of excavation."

@Neonmirrorblack maybe, maybe not. Idk for sure quantitatively, but I would imagine that a large majority of HDR TVs, oled or not, have deeper blacks than projectors and tube TVs did back in 1995. I'd love for someone to chime in with hard data on that. But really the reason I posted this quote is that I think people are getting way too triggered over Fincher using AI here, merely because it's a hot button. I'm sure he used it as a tool within reason, not just a heavy handed set-it-and-forget-it thing. This is the same guy that uses quite a bit of CGI in his films, by drama/thriller standards, in ways that no one even notices if not pointed out. This community is getting further and further away from just enjoying their favorite movies without stressing over what their grade a magnifying glass reveals. *People cancelling their orders over a headline instead of asking the one question that matters: does it look better than ever as the same film that I remember falling in love with? If the answer is yes then enjoy it. If it's not anything you can notice while watching under normal viewing conditions, then don't worry about it.

@@Chrisratata CRT had better blacks than even plasma, so sorry, only OLED is actually going to give the "lush blacks" he mentioned. MicroLED as well, but there aren't any Micro TVs yet, just "the wall" panel stuff. Everything else is still going to give washed out blacks by comparison or major blooming everywhere if it's a FALD screen.

@@Neonmirrorblack that's not my memory of CRT. OLED's blacks are much much deeper than everything, obviously, but I seem to recall plasmas with deeper blacks than the CRTs I owned. Case in point, every single CRT TV I've seen when off is practically nowhere near pure black. You might be right by some quantitative metric, it's just quite vividly not my personal memory of it (though I wasn't but so focused on the technicalities of A/V other than how Component looked better than RCA and that DVD looked so much better than VHS back then). Either way, Fincher's instictive definition of "very deep, rich, velvety blacks for free" may not be the same as either of ours. He may simply be referring to the guaranteed precision/accuracy of HDR moreso than any particular depth of it. He would need to expound on it for us to know for sure.

@@Chrisratata Kuros were the only plasmas that could technically get deeper than CRT, but the issue isn't just how deep they could get, it's the plasma "glow" that would essentially make them equal to CRT, not actually "darker" overall. The only real benefit to plasmas over CRT at the time of release were that they were 16:9 or 16:10 and up to 1080p. For motion clarity, CRTs still blew them out of the water. The reason OLED "black" is deeper is because it's actually able to hit reference black, which neither CRT nor plasma could do. Well, CRT could with a specific mastering monitor, but not really on consumer TVs. With an OLED, reference black is simply the pixels turning off. Both plasma and CRT still destroy OLED though when it comes to *near black* details, and I say this as someone who absolutely loves the G4 they just got last week.

I have the steelbook 4k of it and it was like watching it in the cinema 30 years ago . The 4k is definitely that little bit better than the blu ray . The dark creepy atmosphere was just as I remembered it in the cinema but the blu ray never quite captured the same feeling and the 4k steelbook is very nice .

In the original, the first gunshot at the end is interrupted by a slow-motion insert close-up of the gun as it fires. I saw this last night in IMAX, and that insert shot was gone, leaving the gore intact - there was definitely more blood and brain matter flying out. Does this 4K keep this scene uncensored, or is it shown the way it was originally? Thanks!

I didnt like the packaging so i grabbed my bluray version and took out the disk and slip insert and put it into an empty two disk slot 4k case and put the 4k disk in it and then put it in the 4k slipcase. It fits pretty good actually. Ill probably stick the original fold out slot holder in a drawer or something.

It’s a great transfer and the packaging is good EXCEPT for the awful cardboard sleeve that holds the disc. Always worried that removing and replacing the discs in those sleeves will lead to eventual damage.

Although it may not have needed Dolby Atmos do to the sound stage for this film I believe lack of Dolby Vision was a missed feauture. I invested in a new TV, sound system, and blu-ray player so I could watch Dolby Vision and hear Dolby Atmos and I have been a fan of this film since it launced at the theaters 30 years ago and to not be able to use those Dolby feautures is disappointing.

Regarding the 5.1 surround mix, depending on your setup and your receiver or processor, you can decode a third channel from the two surround channels, giving you a rear center channel. So, this would give you, effectively, a 6.1 surround mix. This is also the case for the New Line Platinum DVD edition, and I believe also the Blu Ray editions. However, I noticed that the surround channels on the 4K seemed to be at a lower volume than they are on my blu.

I think it’s hilarious that Fincher actually worked on the release even to the point of vetoing the packaging, yet couldn’t invest a bit of his time in some new special features. 4Ks releases of older classics are regularly disappointing due to a lack of interest in providing new special features. It’s laziness and we shouldn’t just accept it.

I thought the sound (particularly at the start) was muddy with dialect not given enough preference over background sound. Was there any HDR in this ? Too dark in too many places. Obviously the style of the film is grey brown rainy miserable I have a high end OLED and a top end 4K with a top AV receiver. Still a great 4k though.

I don't think it's nitpicking to staunchly condemn the practice of directors altering their films years after release. Cause then you HAVE to nitpick just to find the version of the film you prefer. When they re-released the first "Saw", more "gore" was added, it was color graded to shit, audio beats were missing, the new chapter selection was nonsensical, and Dr. Gordan's last line of the movie "I wouldn't lie to you" was omitted. The emotional climax of the movie and its characters was removed, and nobody noticed. The idea that just because someone who hasn't seen it won't notice is like saying any lie is okay as long as nobody knows the true. These are just movies, it's not serious, but I think artwork should be preserved, not covered.

My thoughts on SEVEN STEELBOOK 4K... I liked the artwork better on the STEELBOOK on what's in the box... As for the picture, it was excellent... The sound was easy to listen to... The only negative is that it didn't have a DOLBY ATMOS SOUNDTRACK...

Hey Ken, this movie definitely deserved an Atmos soundtrack. Without a doubt you say that a little too often most movies that are multi channel already could benefit from a remix Atmos treatment. I watched it Friday night and there’s certainly nothing to complain about. As far as the video goes,the 5.1 mix does sound good but it’s mostly front heavy and lacks atmospherics most of the time, but when it opens up, it really sounds good, but that happens very infrequently with a atmos mix the whole movie would be atmospheric, and when it opened up, it would be spectacular. also, the reversed slipcover I think is it homage to the credits rolling up instead of rolling down kind of a nice touch. Curious if they left the CCE effect that they did not do on the VHS release but did on the Criterion laser disc box set. CCE is a process that leaves some of the silver on the finished film for a bit of an ethereal look to it. Not even many release prints had the process done.

I like the packaging. Its the same as the og criterion laserdisc set. The movie speaks for itself it doesnt need flashy packaging, i feel that would take away from it. I remember spacey purposely leaving himself off the og billing to keep the suspense. Thanks for the reply the other day too on IG. My copy came today but im away for work until the weekend. I've splashed the extra dosh for the steel book because I don't really like the digi packs. Be interested if other people are thinking that way? Se7en on 4K is a step down from Blu-ray for audio. The Blu-Ray featured an immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1. The DVD you showed also features a DTS ES 6.1 track. I don't understand why the 4K couldn't at least keep the 7.1 mix. A brand new release was a great opportunity for an Atmos Upgrade, and they blew it.

I just ordered the UK steelbook from diabolik. Pretty sure it's the same as the U.S. one but includes a second blu-ray version as well. This is a blind buy for me and everyone was sold out of the U.S. one, so when I saw it pop up on diabolik over the weekend and was already ordering something else there, I grabbed it too. I have a love/hate relationship with Fincher. I hate (Flight Club, Alien 3, The Social Network) about as many of his films as I like (Zodiac, The Game, Panic Room). We'll see which column this goes in.
