I think it was Jeff Rauseo who accurately observed that over the years, the history of physical media releases in different formats has the representation of a pyramid. At the bottom of the pyramid is VHS, then DVD, Blu Ray and 4K. Gradually the number of releases gets smaller as each new format is introduced. My point is that Blu Rays IMO are still essential in today’s physical media environment, as there will be plenty of releases that will never be upgraded to 4K.

The reason is that as you get to the older formats they had MORE TIME. Of course VHS is going to have more than DVD, it came out before DVD. And DVD is going to have more than Blu-ray because it came out before Blu-ray. TIME.

Yeah, the fact is, you can buy a $50 Bluray players and a $300 4K TV from Wal-Mart and be totally satisfied with the experience. I already hear the 4K cult telling others how, if they don't drop thousands, they aren't getting the "real" experience. That doesn't really promote new interest in hard media.

It’s annoying that some people seem to look down on regular 1080p blu ray as if it’s not a quality product anymore since 4K UHD. Most of my collection is Standard blu ray with some 4K as well but like 90 percent Standard! The quality is not just fine or ok but in most cases looks amazing with consistency across the format. I don’t feel like I’m watching some inferior movie when swapping between 4K and Standard blu ray, I’m still often blown away by the 1080p disks and don’t need every movie to make it to 4K. I have no need to replace great transfers at a premium price and double dip on movies I already own.i understand that 4K is superior and in some cases looks amazing but the format is inconsistent with transfers, not all 4K blu rays look as good as they should or i find sometimes too Dark and I prefer the Standard editions and also in some cases I really see no real difference at all perhaps just marginally better in 4K. Quality to price ratio is amazing on 1080p disks I pick up movies second hand for as little as £2, I never thought that would be possible in 2007 when blu rays were the price 4K movies are now and that was 18 years ago! Long live Blu ray!!!

I think blu ray offers incredible value and you get 90% of the experience of a 4K. You’re right about the 4K transfers, it can be hit or miss and you have to research the disk to make sure it’s graded properly. Besides the increase in resolution, I enjoy the 4k format because it is able to display High Dynamic Range through Dolby Vision and HDR10. Not to mention the higher bit rate the disk is able to run at as well. For me personally, I’m willing to spend the extra money on the 4k format even though the quality is marginally “better”. I love how physical media has a format for anyone and everyone depending on their budget and preferences! Everyone wins.

Same here mate , I went to cex yesterday, traded in a rubbish 4k steelbook for £23 and came out with 2 bags of 1080P blu rays. Ranging from 50p to £6 each. @@123clyd3 agreed! I really enjoyed Alien Romulus recently on 4K. The HDR was pretty cool and I’m not putting down 4K and can understand people who want the best available disks that being said if I already owned the movie I doubt I would of upgraded. I was on the look out for Seven on 4K as it’s a personal favourite I wanted to upgrade from my old DVD set but in the process of waiting for price to drop a bit I saw the 1080p blu ray second hand in CEX for £3 so £22 cheaper than I was going to spend and the transfer is sublime! The DTS HD audio was fantastic on my surround sound also, I’m sure some will say 4K transfer is better but if a 16 year old disk is blowing me away like this and I’m getting a lot of enjoyment from the quality why would I spend a lot more for marginal gains at the expense of a great blu ray transfer, I don’t have space for the double dip so the blu ray would have to go, making a great disk/transfer obsolete. I’m glad I have not become a 4K snob, it’s a great time to collect 1080p I’m hoping in a few years time 4K will be as cheap as Blu ray is now. Doubt it will happen tho. Cheers

I just buy less physical media, but when I do buy it, it's on 4k at a good price or I wait for a sale. I will still buy Bluray if the price is low enough and it's not in 4k. Even though DVD can be found cheaper, I won't buy anything new in that format. It just doesn't look good, compared to bluray or 4k UHD. I had already bought more DVDs than I own in Bluray and 4k and I won't get rid of them, but I choose not to waste my money on DVD now.

Blu rays are cheaper to manufacture, and cheaper to buy. In most cases blu ray is enough. KZbinrs tend to feel the pressure of 4K, 4K, 4K to the point where you can visibly see them feel diminished talking about “it’s JUST a blu ray release”. Not all viewers are heavy on 4K. I’s wager that most people would curate which films they buy on 4K given the option of both. For example, Demolition Man got hyped up and plugged on KZbin like it was the second coming, but in truth, it’s a budget bloated, mediocre 90’s action film. If judge Dread got the 4K treatment I’d expected the same over the top hyping simply because the pressure of the KZbinr algorithm demands it to keep the channel moving forward, but once again, Judge Dread is fun, but less than mediocre. Even with a 4K, is a film like Demolition Man worth hyping and paying top dollar for? No. Blu ray’s still outsell 4K by a mile, and DVD outsells blu ray by ten miles. The reason for this is that most collectors, I imagine, spend for higher quality on films they personally love, rather than any Demolition Man trash they put out on 4K. Just because it’s there on 4K, doesn’t mean it deserves the treatment, nor does it deserve reverence on a collectors shelf when a DVD or Blu Ray is perfectly fine. I suspect that even for you, the reason you’ve begun to focus on the POINT of blu rays is not because they don’t serve a purpose, but that the underlying thinking is now overshadowed by the fact that everyone else pushes 4K, 4K, 4K, so 4K now holds the only relevant place in your thought process. There is nothing wrong with blu rays, and a well curated collection will not only exclude trash wrapped up in a pretty 4K bow, but also be curated evenly between blu ray and WORTHY 4K releases.

I’ve been collecting home video since I was a kid. From VHS, DVD, Bluray, and now 4k. There’s certain movies I enjoy in specific formats. Just earlier today I was watching Beverly Hills Ninja on VHS and was loving every minute of it. As a collector but more importantly a custodian to home video I appreciate everything each format has done to preserve all these amazing films. I don’t think I’ll ever stop buying any of the formats no matter how good the resolution is due to the fact that some movies just look better in their original release and also the ritual of putting on the movie. Rewinding a tape and watching the trailers before the movie starts on VHS. Going through the secret menus and Easter eggs on a DVD. Enjoying all the bonus features on a bluray along with the interactive bonuses, and lastly the near perfect resolution of certain films on 4k where reality seizes to exists and for almost 2hrs you’re caught up in a new world. Great video as always Ken 🤙🏽

Probably 75-80% of my collection is Blu ray. It's the best format in my opinion. While I adore 4K and it is the better format as far as picture quality goes, sometimes there's not much of a difference in picture quality in reality and it's definitely not the better option audio wise as most blu's released now a days have the exact same audio tracks as their 4K counterpart (endless you're Sony apparently). I do get it if there's also an audio upgrade, but that's a case by case basis for me. Blu ray is still the standard for me and most of the time I do opt to buy it over a 4K version, depending on the title of course. We have to remember that 4K is still a small percentage of the market and the reality is that most people wanting high definition physical copies buy standard 2K blu ray.

Hi Ken. Blu ray does tend to get bullied a lot by it's elder sibling 4k blu ray. Look at all the channels on here discussing picture quality, sound quality, extras... I get it but.. For example, I don't wanna buy National Lampoon in 4k because of the picture quality... It's about the entertainment factor or memories of the past. Different story with Ben Hur or Lawrence of Arabia lol At the end of the day it's about supporting choice in physical media and that's what your all about. Great show as always🙂 Roll on blu ray lol

You should really consider adding pawn shops to your thrifting trips. Some don't do physical media anymore but some of the ones that still do can be a gold mine. I've paid as little as $2 for a 4k and can regularly buy them for around $6. I live about 30 miles north of Seattle and a couple times a year I take a road trip to Portland and hit every pawn shop along the way that still does physical media. It turns a 4 hour road trip into a 12 hour trip but I'm not in a hurry when I go. Last time I went I think I picked up around 20 4ks and spent around $100

I too had about 500 DVD’s but I absolutely considered myself a “collector” but I knew with the quality difference I’d never want to watch those again, so I put them into large black hefty garbage bags and took them all to FyE and traded them in for store credit. I used that store credit on a BOGO sale to buy all Blu-ray’s and started my collection there with about 30 movies. I now have close to 1000 and about half are 4K, I’ve replaced and sold off a good portion of the Blu’s but some will probably just always remain in 1080p and that’s ok, they’re still worth watching to me, unlike DVD…. I still purchase plenty of regular Blurays for my personal collection. For a small example instead of spending over 40 dollars for that Arrow release of Demolition Man on 4K, I got that with Tango and Cash with Over the Top for a fraction of the price for just a single 4K. I'm more than happy with the quality of the picture. I have also purchased plenty of films that haven't had a 4K release yet. The price between DVD to Bluray is not near as great a leap going to 4K. Yes, certain films I would prefer on 4K, but it doesn't mean every film needs to be especially at the prices some of them are going for.

Good video Ken. Personally, I don't really think in terms of format separation as much as I do just having the movie in my collection in the best available quality. I still love my blu-rays, because for many movies, that format will be the last stop and the best we'll get for those movies. I know there are a lot of titles out there that will probably never get a 4K release, so I'm happy to own any of those on blu-ray (which I still view as a high-quality format, relative to DVD). But I also love the growth we're seeing on the 4K format, and I'm sure we'll continue to see even more upgrades from blu over the next few years.

For me I usually only buy the 4k of a film if I really like it, it's a film I'd rewatch over and over, AND it's a vast improvement over the blu in audio/video/features. Otherwise most films I'm happy with on blu as they're cheaper. Regardless how I feel, I think blu NEEDS to stay as the majority of people will opt for that format. 4k is still quite niche and not everyone has all the hardware to get the best out of the format.

Collecting blu-rays from 2015-2018 was such a blast! I remember Disney and Best Buy issuing $5 and $10 coupons for the blu-ray upgrades of certain movies, which made upgrading the DVD cheap. And some blus coming with movie tickets to the sequel. It makes me sad that era is over and that I've boxed up many of those blu-rays once I got the 4K.

DVD is still the largest selling format. Many people have a Blu Ray player that will connect to your usual television. BUT with 4K you need to buy a new player and television. Plus I buy physical release for the special features such as audio commentaries. If you buy a 4K release (which I have no need for the 4K disk) the BluRay in the package contains the special features. Also I have a lot of 3D movies going back as far as The Wizard of Oz (1939) (not supported by 4K).

Shout and Arrow are mostly focusing on 4K upgrades and most of them aren't really that great. To me, all Kino and Shout Factory 4Ks are far too dark. My equipment is calibrated and I do have Dolby Vision on my 83 inch Sony Oled TV. One of my recent purchases, the UK Twister edition looked very ugly on 4k. It's a matter of taste if you like the green color change in the sky, but the 4K overall was far too dark - Details are totally lost.

I've spent the last 5 years watching 2K blurays on a 2008 plasma. I recently bought an LG C4 OLED and 2K blurays are unbelievable. I'm not very keen on what Dolby Vision is, but my TV turns on Dolby Vision for ALL 2K blurays. I think that's what's doing the magic.

Dolby Vision should only turn on if the movie was made with that feature. Your TV is probably upscaling the blurays and they probably just look better on the new OLED. I bought an LG C1 OLED 65" a couple of years ago and rewatching movies is like a new experience, compared to my old 55" 4k TV. Blurays are good but nothing beats a 4k with Ultra HDR or Dolby Vision on my C1 OLED. Your C4 OLED is just brighter and a little better at upscaling non 4k media than my C1.
@solipsisticsquanderer
@solipsisticsquanderer 14 сағат бұрын
@frommatorav1 Do you know why HDR gets activated on 2K blurays with the C4? The disc player is a Sony UBP-X700. With Dolby Vision turned off on the bluray player, 2K blurays play in SDR, but when I activate Dolby Vision on the bluray player, it also activates HDR, even on 2K discs! This is very strange, and not what I was expecting, but it is really amazing. Another thing - Dolby Vision also makes the OLED have the same kind of film-like motion I was accustomed to with plasma. It was a huge concern before buying the C4, but now the soap opera effect is gone.
@frommatorav1

@@solipsisticsquanderer I have that same bluray player. One issue is Dolby Vision setting has to be turned off and on in the settings. The Panasonic 4k players enable the Dolby Vision automatically but the Sony's you have to turn Dolby Vision on and I guess it stays on. If you turn the Dolby Vision setting off on the bluray player, I would be surprised if it had a negative effect. I spent a few minutes with settings for motion to get one I liked. The C4 has a motion setting you can just enable, that is supposed to work really well with motion.

Either I don't know something fundamental about Dolby Vision or there is confusion in this thread. Yes, Dolby Vision requires 10 bit colors (and emulates 12 bit colors), but it has nothing to do with the pixel resolution. So yes, Blu Rays don't have enough colors but apart from that the 1080p (or alternatively 2K) wouldn't be a problem. I think what would also hinder HDR (including Dolby Vision) on Blu Rays is the older compression algorithm that might look especially bad when DV pushes the contrasts.

I like having old Blu-rays AND DVDs for loner copies, gifts, special features that didn't carry over, different color timing, covers, packaging/nostalgia, etc. I also just really think there's going to come a time where SOME people around me will want to get back into physical media, at least to a small extent, and I'll have titles I can GIVE them that'll encourage their desire to own movies again. And then when they see nice editions from my collection, I think a couple of friends/family could become inspired enough to buy a few new titles themselves.

Ken I am glad that you still appreciate your BDs. I am about ten years older than you and I will tell you your priorities do change with collections as you get older. When I have a son going to college, I tend to feel a little guilty about spending so much on a movie just to have a 4K version of it. When you watch a movie on DVD or BD, are you still getting the enjoyment of the movie? I don't need to watch the 4K for me to change my mind whether I like the movie or not. 4K movies are so expensive. Sometimes I just want the BD with a 4K scan. I don't need chunky box sets. Nothing against those who do. What I absolutely love is the combo packs. Give me 4K plus BD or BD plus DVD. Also I always think about when my time is up in life and I pass on from this world, I will never get any of that money back from a collectors box set.
