There's a fairly large shortcut at the beginning of the race. U actually don't have to leave the highway for the checkpoint on the offramp. Just hug the wall. Keep going on the highway and u can hit the next checkpoint leaving the highway. Just hug the sides!

I'm going to try again with the Victory when I finish the game :), to be honest when I was a kid, I only got as far as this point, and I wanted to finish it with slower cars.
