The sheer hypocrisy from Bev in the whole of that church scene. She condemned a man for bringing a gun into the house of God, but brought in gallons of poison. Then the utter cowardice of quivering behind the closed door so she wouldn’t get eaten, even though it was supposed to mean she was ‘saved.’ She’s such a realistically detestable character. Also the scene w the angel made me jump so hard the first time I saw it!

The second it shows the “angel” when the sheriff takes his son to leave…I get FULL body chills every time between the imagery and the music. A cult situation is terrifying in itself, but could you imagine seeing something like that..in a church no less? 😱

That does explain a lot, because part of the reason why I couldn't enjoy this show was that everyone was making such poor decisions. The clips you inserted after The Most Satisfying Shooting In TV Series History was one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a Mike Flanagan reaction. 😄 When I saw this show, that glorious moment of karma made me cheer and clap, too. How you pieced your edit together was a great comedic remedy for the gravity and horror of the subject. I feel the same way: I am far more afraid of the evil that cults do than I am of vampires. totally made me think of jonestown too. I watched a documentary a few years back on it with interviews from the few who survived and family members, for 2 weeks straight after watching it I would randomly have images pop into my mind (I couldn't unhear the real recording of the people dying in agony) and I would cry uncontrollably. I would just be at work and have to excuse myself to sob in the bathroom, a literally felt a pain in my chest. Nobody deserves that and most of them were forced some at gunpoint or injected forcibly with syringes especially when we are talking about all the children there. After that anytime someone brought up the "Mass Suicide" or "The Tragedy" when speaking about Jonestown I would immediately say "You mean the Mass Murder" because that's the reality only a very small number of his congregation were "true believers" enough to willingly drink the majority were made to drink while others who tried to flee were gunned down by the militant force of the congregation.

This is what I meant by no one knowing what vampires are in the setting of this show. If they did, SURELY it would have been brought up when Erin went to the doctor with her story of what happened to Riley and the conversation afterwards. But it isn't, because they don't have a word for it. The word "vampire" isn't a thing.

To me, I think the entire Church scene is one of the most chilling moments I've ever seen in Horror history because it shows that it's not the Vampires that you should be scared of, it's those who use Cult-like manipulation to gaslight people into doing horrible things to themselves. It's not a surprise that it references the infamous "Jonestown" massacre. I literally have no words to how vile and disgusting Bev truly is. She may be a villain, but she's a realistically terrifying one.

The nature of the fear in this episode and this series is what makes it my favorite Mike Flanagan work. I love the double-whammy of the mass sewer slide followed by the massacre of feeding. It all happens so fast that it's difficult to process.

So idk if it’s exactly how it works but basically the drinks they had weren’t just rat poison, it also had the angel blood in it, any amount of vampire blood in your system will turn you when you die, but longer exposure to it will give you the benefits without being fully turned (the old mom who turned young) so even tho Ali hadn’t had communion anyone who drank the poison can become a vampire, If that makes any sense

I hated Bev!!! She definitely set off a lot of triggers. The way she spoke to anyone she felt wasn't up her standards. But the worse part was her justification of the Priest's actions. She found excuses for all his wrong doing and I can't help but think of how many do this with clergymen and cult leaders.

You nailed it with your comments about how cults work, And no there's no point at which they wonder if they're doing something wrong, because if it comes from "god" why would they question it. For me this is absolutely terrifying, because this is exactly how it happens. I've seen it and it's horrible. I write horror and the religious fanaticism I experienced from my mother has fed a lot of my greatest fears. This episode had me paralyzed with fear. That church sequence was pure hell.
