I grew up in Sarasota and I remember when the pass was a legendary snook fishin spot until it closed when I was 10. Lots of us locals said a hurricane would open it up because that part of the bay needs a drain. Obviously Midnight Pass needs to stay open. Opening up the pass was the only good thing that happened from the hurricanes. I live in VA by the Chesapeake Bay now but I really hope they keep the pass open. It might need some rock jetties. I'd love to go catch some snook down there next summer after they've had time for cleaning up the storm mess and they want visitors again.

Now that the results of the pass being open can be seen, you really have to question the decision making process of your state and local governments. Seems like the pass remained closed just because. Now the question is how many other issues remain unresolved just because it’s its easier to do nothing. No one in the local government has a problem with unfettered development.

clearly nature prefers the open flow of water. This may or may not be yet another blessing in terms of storm surge. As the water could bring in surge but also let it out, balancing the flow. stopping it from pooling up. and finding new routes across the barrier island itself. This is good. but hopefully people are mindfull about NOT trying to cross it on foot. as the flow could easily have enough current strength to quickly suck someone out at a distance. god forbid some kids.

So here is a flip side of having government involved in this process.... They are going to establish some ridiculous whatever and close this area off to people in trying to manage it. Here is an example. South of cockroach bay they established Rock Ponds Area. This is what they say in google maps: "Expansive wetland features diverse wildlife from shore birds to manatees, sport fishing & kayaking." I have been hoping to kayak there since like 2011 or so.... still closed off to public. My fear is that this "pass" could very well turn into another Shell Key in Tierra Verde... where pass opened/closed/whatever and then BAM developer built these massive condos and hotels. Keep in mind that land developers off Pointe (1000ft away) and Casey Key (1600 ft away) would LOVE to put a giant mcmansion hotel condo etc right there. This hoonery happened with Shell Key in a span of less than 10 years to have built a massive housing complex right non top of bird sanctuary.

It already did close back up after Helene opened it. Milton opened it wider, but it's already closed up a bit since then. The bay side of the pass is quite shallow, so shifting sand could easily close it again.

Natural processes are there for a REASON (and they are free!). 'Brilliant' people like to build where they should not, then complain and demand action when their choices are shown by Mother Nature to be foolish. This pertains to dunes, their natural maintenance, and ill-advised beach construction that destroys the balance.
