Because the original movie was my jam as a kid and i know it well, and also because im bored, i will document the differences and similarites of the two movies here. (i wont make any judgments, i loved the new one just as much as the old one.) - First off, the original was a musical. this one isn't, and to answer Brad's question, no, none of the songs in this movie were in the original. - The original takes place in Passamaquaddi, this one takes place in Millhaven. - In the new one, the names of the old man and his daughter who later care for Pete are named Meacham and Grace. In the old one they are named Lampie and Nora - Meacham and Grace in the new movie are park rangers, and in the original they were lighthouse keepers. - In the new one, Elliot doesn't want himself nor Pete to go into a town they don't know about, and stay in the woods. In the old one, when Pete goes to a new town, Elliot is okay with it, but Pete makes him go invisible because he is aware of the possible outcomes. Pete also mentions that they have done this kind of thing before. - In the old one, we never find out what happened to Pete's parents, we just know that his newer adopted parents are a family of 4 dirty hillbillies who only adopted him to use as a slave, and Pete hides from them with the help of Elliot. - In the new one, the villains are mainly hunters and people that hate trees (the main one being Karl Urban,) and in the old one the villains are the aforementioned hillbillies who want Pete, and two 2-bit traveling medicine men who, when they find out about Elliot's existence, they want to chop him up to use his body parts for medicines for financial gain. The medicine men and the hillbillies team up later to try to capture Elliot and Pete. - In the old one, we see Lampy seeing Elliot with Pete outside of the bar in Passamaquoddi, before running away afraid, and no one would believe him because he was a drunk. In the new one, we have to take Meacham's word that he saw Elliot in the woods. - In the new one, Elliot loves Pete and only Pete, and at the end of the movie when Pete lives with Graces and her husband's daughter, they go visit Elliot and his new family in the mountains. At the end of the old one, we find that Elliot was basically a guardian angel for people in need, and once Pete found a new and loving family, Elliot told Pete that he had to go to help another kid in need of help, and flies away while the family says goodbye and the credits roll. - In the old one, Nora had a missing fiance who vanished during a boat trip, and is later mysteriously guided home by Elliot. In the new one, none of this happens. - That's all I have to say about that.

Glad you guys enjoyed this one so much. It's super refreshing to have a Disney movie that's just genuinely heart-on-sleeve well made and heartwarming and isn't a part of some giant franchise. These are the kinds of remakes Disney should be making, as I definitely think this version of Pete's Dragon blows the original out of the water.

the original pete's dragon is one of those really awkward disney films that came out right at that time after Walt Disney died and the company had no idea which direction to go in their films, so it's bizarrely mean-spirited and dark, with really repetitive and forgettable songs. It's a great Snob Review if you want to do it.

I need to see Pete's Dragon again, because the audience I was with was awful. I take that back, kind of. Obviously, there were a lot of kids in there. Most were fine. Except for a kid and his grandmother that sat in the same row my friend and I did. If your kids or your grandkids can't handle themselves at movies, don't take them to movies. I'm guessing the kid was around 7 years old. And he kept shrieking at the top of his lungs throughout the first hour of the movie. Four times during the movie, he started screaming "I wanna go home! I wanna go home!" and he'd start to run off. The grandmother would grab him and force him to sit down so he would start screaming again. Meanwhile, the grandmother would keep up a loud commentary to her other grandchild "See, Elliott is turning invisible. This is so the bad man who's hunting him won't be able to see him!" Yeah, I need to see it again. Maybe I'll buy it when it comes out on blu-ray. I'm a sucker for Karl Urban and Robert Redford. And together in the same movie? Yeah, I'll probably buy it.

I really liked the original, my older brother show it to me when I was a kid and we have abd share goos memories of those times. I don't think is that terrible, I mean, even less after watching other movies of it's time and ugly kids movies today like Ice Age 4 or Pets, so Im really happy to know that it was a good remake of the movie, making it better, I'm really glad. After Maleficent and Cinderella I did not have any hopes, Jungle Book was decent, but overruled by the original but well, when Disney actually tries, they can do it. Right. So thanks for this review, I will bring my older brother to watch it too~

Oh!!! Bed-knobs & Broomsticks remake!!! With Tom Hiddleston as the show-man, Evanna Lynch as the witch-in-training, & Benedict Cumberbatch as a Nazi commander!!!! It would have as many practical effects as possible (e.g. people in green-screen suits wearing real(ish) armor for the walking armor scenes), it would stay set in WW-2 England, & it would use the same live actor with cartoon scene work as "Loony-toons: Back in Action", no CG animation.

I remember the original Petes dragon it sounds like I'd probably like the remake more then the original that's what happened with maleficent . There is one big problem with the original Petes dragon it's very very long and slow its 2 hours and 14 minutes I tried to watch it today I'd probably fall asleep in the middle of it unless I watched it really early in the middle of the day. I have had really bad sleeping problems for years I fact a couple years ago I fell asleep through part of Disney's the love bug I almost fell asleep at my parents house after book of Ellie came out my sister had to wake me up. Disney also did not make some very wise ethnical decision with the original with original film like one of the main support characters in it is the town drunk slash dad our gran father of the main female lead character in the movie I think he was here dad what were you thinking Disney. At least there decision in the original Petes dragon weren't as bad as they were in some of there's 1980s movies especially the black cauldron.

i detest remakes as a rule but they have had some good ones. people seem to for get that The Maltese Falcon' the (1941) Classic is a remake. but i have yet to see this one. i have the original on dvd i just have to watch it i bought it cause i'm a Huge Mickey Rooney Fan. he may have been a dick later in life but i don't care i love him as an actor. and by what's said on here the remake was done right. that's how it should be when you remake a film you should try and make it better and not worse and 99.9 percent of the remakes in the past 20 years or so have been utter shit because they most of the time fail at trying to improve on them and there's only like a 2 or 3 % of them that do work and the remake of Dawn of the dead' i think worked it didn't use the same story but it did have the idea of being stuck in a mall and that's how you should do it i think. not just remake the same film
