I think the tv disclaimer really nails the point of the ending. "In the aftermath of violence, the distinction between hero and villain is sometimes a matter of interpretation or misinterpretation of facts. "Taxi Driver" suggests that tragic errors can be made." This is a man who is mentally ill, unstable and violent. He has not had any treatment, indeed he has been praised and positively reinforced for basically his psychotic break. He will fucking snap again, and if the mirror freak out at the end of the movie, as if he see's someone in it, suggests anything, its going to not be so 'conveniently' targeted this next time and what happens will be fucking horrific.

Charlie Ruiz That's what I thought when I saw Nightcrawler. Granted I love Taxi Driver as one of my favorites of all time and just really enjoyed Nightcrawler as a great film. I'm glad you guys talked about that final shot in the mirror. I had to rewind it multiple times when I saw it. I'm reminded of a William S. Burroughs lecture in which he argued that once a heroes purpose is fullfilled, they're basically dead. In that respect, I don't think taxi driver ever tries painting Travis in a very heroic light, and that final shot is sorta just his final descent into madness. Having JUST watched Taxi driver, it's fucking horrifying with that context.

I don't know if anyone else has brought it up yet, but concerning Scorsese's cameo, I saw the documentary on my DVD recently, and apparently he wasn't meant to do the part. Someone else was scheduled, but couldn't do it for some reason right before they filmed it, so Martin just got in the back seat and did it. Damn, it's a great scene. Also, Scorsese said that DeNiro told him he wouldn't react straight away to anything he said or did, and Martin would have to make him respond, hence why there are so many repeated lines in that nervous, frantic voice. All in all, I love this movie; it's possibly my favourite 70's movie (that or Annie Hall), and I could watch it at any time or place. Well worth the watch if anyone hasn't seen it yet. Oh, and this review was great as well.

The only way we would get a review is if Brad and company decided to make a road trip to see the film. By the way, I live in St. Louis and the film is showing at only one theater in town. Shin Godzilla got more theaters in St. Louis than I'm Not Ashamed.

Nicole, there are a total of 8 theaters in Missouri that are showing the film. Commenting on the off factor of DeNiro's character, I had a similar feel with Seth Rogen in Observe and Report. I went in expecting a LOL performance from Rogen from the trailers on TV, but it became darker and more black comedy like. Again, only saw the trailer in which it showed the funny parts out of context. Observe and Report isn't up to Taxi Driver standards, but it did remind me of Taxi Driver. The ending was ambiguous, it could either be a cynical reality where he's hailed as a vigilante hero and returns to everyday life OR it's his fantasy. Either way the key moment is that double-take when he looked into the rearview mirror, for me it was a split-second of panicked realization when Travis briefly caught a glimpse of his true self behind all the delusions.

The conversation about the potential sequel can be applied to so many other things. The first thing that popped into my head is the "in name only remakes" that Disney is doing. They're entirely banking on the fact that someone will see it because it has the same title as a movie that they like. When you know the movie will be awful, and worse insulting. Same for the cheapquels they did in the early 2000's. Those movies are terrible but everyone watched them because they had the same title as a movie that they liked. Thank God Disney said that none of them are actually part of any kind of continuity.
