Since weve already had 3 months of witnessing and experiencing what a masterpiece Midnights
I thought it might be fun to start of the the year with new theory again

I always thought this song was about Drew. If she's chasing that fame and he stayed the same, why would it be about someone famous???

I still think it’s b. Taylor Lautner. I think her town of Nashville as the home of country music was the wasteland that was keeping her fenced in to country music when she wanted to branch out, that was wanting her to fit a certain look and narrative of the young ingenue country sweetheart (pageant queens and big pretenders). I think that night of the VMAs when Kanye interrupted her (where her boyfriend at the time, Taylor Lautner, was standing by after presenting her award) is when “all of [her] changed like midnight rain” and sent her on a different trajectory with her career and what she needed to prove. It was the beginning of the end of their relationship as she stopped making him a priority. Looking back on the relationship, she could see where they could have been heading as he was a nice guy who dreamed of a happy family of his own one day… but that traditional family life wasn’t what she wanted for herself, at least not then. She still had a lot to prove, had a lot to accomplish, had a lot to feel and say. He wanted the comfortable, the stable… she wanted the pain of growth, of hard work, of breaking barriers. I imagine seeing Taylor Lautner get engaged and married - to yet another Taylor, who is now comically also Taylor Lautner like her husband - prompted TS to reflect on their relationship and the different paths they went down since then. She made her own name, as opposed to being the girl who would take and share his. There is no pining for one another or regret that they were the one that got away… they both got what they wanted and they have moved on. He has no reason to think of her now that he’s happily married, except for when she shows up on TV. And she has no reason to think of him except when she’s choosing to revisit past memories… like on Midnights.
