Just phenomenal! I remember watching this in '88 and thinking this is the future of figure skating! Guess that was naïve of me. 30 years later - and with a clean skate under the new system - she'd still hit the podium against anyone out there. There is just no one out there quite like Midori, and I now honestly don't think there ever will be!

eliandal - great comment in your opening line regarding midori's skate being the future of figure skating. there is a video on magic moments in figure skating done in 1990, available on youtube. there is a segment on midori's calgary LP where the commentator says the future belongs to Midori. also if you watch midori's 1989 worlds exhibition skate at the end of it Scott Hamilton says "witnessing the birth of a new age in figure skating".

Absolutely incredible and the height of the jumps oh my God!
She was not only one of the best in women´s competition in history, she was THE BEST, ever! Such ease in the jumps, incredible rotation, she was incredible! Which girl was able to show such jumps with such ease? Nobody! If figures hadn´t existed in the past, the rest wouldn´t have had any chance to beat her, I think she would have won nearly all competitions! Midori was a gift for us and for the ISU. No wonder that she had the nickname: Tsunami girl! One word: Legend!
Beautiful, definitely a GOLD winning performance. Have loved her since the first time I saw her...STILL the greatest and loveliest. No body has ever come close.

You know you've reached legend/iconic status when you're not only universally known as the greatest female jumper in skating history,BUT ALSO you get Peggy Fleming complimenting your lay back spin!!! I'll never forget the chills I got watching "Magical Midori" back in the day.

This free skate would be enough to win the Gold in many olympics. Those are 7 triple jumps, focus on choreography, spins with lots of beautiful forms and the fire🔥 is there too

One of the most inspired and inspiring performances in the history of Olympic figure skating! Clearly, it should have been 6.0 across the board for technical merit and first place in the free!!!!
I'm a little pissed Dick didn't bring up the fact that Midori was the first to land a triple-triple that night! A lot of attention was on Debbie, who was trying to do a 3T-3T (and Debbie had good jumps!), but Midori's was spectacular. I still cry when I see this program. One of the great moments in figure skating history. She moved so many people with her joy and the high quality of her jumps with the amazing, flowing landing edges. A living legend.

10 seconds to 3lz, and what a height. No one can do this, ever. 1:37 2A-1Eu-3S, perfect timing, no preparation. 4:00 split-split-2A, no preparation. The fist at the last moment is cute XD

Such a groundbreaking performance, not one woman in this event could match her technical prowess. Artistic? Yes. In context of the program, she sold it, she felt it and made us feel. To this day, I still think its shameful she didn't medal.

Look how slowly she rotated the triples. I think, she was able for quads.. she hat the techniqe and the height for these jumps. But so sad she retired too early.

This is still one of the iconic routines in figure skating. Midori is my favorite female skater of all time. She was a superlative jumper to be sure, but I also thought she was very much an artist as well. She had so many beautiful moves, like her flying spit sin, camel spin, etc. It must have been so amazing for the audience to see this routine in person.

Dorothy Hamill the US gold medalist said before the Albertville games that Midori was her favorite skater and that when Midori skates she is on the edge of her seat.

i watched this magical period in figure skating as she showed the rest of the field how jumps are done! :) sadly, i've never seen such athleticism in women's figure skating ever since...i miss u midori!
She was so much ahead of her time... Only the compulsory figures were in her way! And don't say that there was any lack on the artistic side so it didn't match with the athletic one. I simply cannot agree with that! She was a lady on the ice... Outstanding forever!!!!

In late 1987,Yamada sensei's father who was in poor health passed away.Midori who was still in high school had quit skating, wanting to be a regular girl and do the things her friends were involved with.Realizing her 'grandfather' treasured Midori and her success, she returned and vowed to go to Calgary to honor him.......which she did.

my friend who is a figure skating specialist.. she watched this olympics, she said if we are to judged all of them now , midori ito will beat all of them in SP AND LP by a mile!! She should not be given 5.8 here. Technical should be 5.9 across the board even her artistry atleast 5.8 across the board if she were a judge at that time.

Ridiculous that she didn't get first place in the long program with this. Had she been scored the way she should have been in both short and long programs, she could have won a medal despite her weak compulsory figures.

this performance was just out of this world. I just watched kat witt's performance again and, dont get me wrong - I think she's a great skater, but seriously when you compare midori's skate and witt's... midori's was far superior. its ridiculous that she did not medal.
