I also had assumed that the theme was a saw playing. I grew up hearing it played by an elderly gent in my church and always loved the sound of it. Thanks for the cover, it really was made to be played this way!

A haunting tune; I've often wondered how the sound was achieved, thanks for showing and playing it. I guess it is only a matter of time before the series depicts a gruesome murder with a saw of some type, if they have not done so already.

You can actually use an ordinary saw. It works just as well but it is obviously much sharper. and it is generally not as long as a musical saw, so is a bit limited on range of notes. If you look on my You tube videos, I have a tutorial on there called secrets of the saw and on it I demonstrate how to play an ordinary saw. It sounds just as good.

The theremin and the saw sound very much alike. Before I looked it up, I had really wondered what it was in the original theme music. Now I guess not many have heard of the theremin, but I actually knew it from a forties jazz recording and the first thing I thought, it could well have been a "singing saw".

Yes. The theremin and the musical saw do create a very similar sound but the instrument on the midsummer murders theme is definitely a theremin.
