The head trauma was extremely disturbing for me. My favorite element of this movie was how the entire village/cult felt each other's emotions (when the old man broke his leg, the sex scene, the burning bodies) but my absolute favorite scene was when the women were crouched over Dani sobbing and screaming with her. That scene really affected me and I don't know why.

Agreed. Especially the ending shots, the final insane images, how everyone is empathizing with the May Queen, then that smile cracks across her face. It’s like a relief, okay these people are here for me and understand what I’m going through, they go through it with me. Love this movie

I feel like Hereditary and Midsommar have a different type of subtlety to them. Hereditary was horrifying, but Midsommar was entirely disorienting. They’re so different that it’s hard to compare

I enjoy hereditary and I gotta say that it is a very chilling movie with good visuals, cinematography, music, and a great performance by toni collette, so yeah I enjoy it and I give it an 8/10. I saw the movie of midsommar and I gotta say that it's a really good and scary movie, and I gotta say florence pugh's performance is the best part of the movie especially the use of emotions, and she is amazing. The atmosphere is amazing, the horror gives me goosebumps, the performances by the cast is really good except for Mark, the music is nice to listen to, the editing, costumes, cinematography, and the directing by Ari Aster are like woe. I enjoy this film and I give it an 8/10 P.S. SPOLIERS: Although I do not enjoy the movie's runtime or pace, it is undeniably stunning. Ari Aster has a trend of showing really powerful/ gut wrenching cries! In Hereditary, when the mother Annie cries on the floor for Charlie and Peter is just standing stiffly in the hallway...very powerful. And in here, when Dani cries for her family in the title sequence i was just blown away. I also enjoyed when the cult women cried along with Dani. It was so intense and fascinating. It made me wonder what it must feel like to cry that hard in a supportive circle. It has to feel out of this world. And of course her crying in the huge flower dress as the sacrifices burned was gorgeous and left an impact.

R I second this. And not only was it good moment, it was also very important for understanding the ending i feel. That moment let me know that Dani was about to be uplifted, supported, and fully submerged by this cult. It made her choice to burn Christian make sense. With realizing the intense level of support, she was ready to let him go.

Deri C yes!! and after she discovers her family and it shows her screaming and crying on the couch and christian is there but not really There with her?? like physically he’s there but he’s not really emotionally engaged or even physically for that matter, even tho i think she was on his lap or he was holding her or something, he wasn’t actively doing anything very intimate he kind of just seemed like dead weight. and at the end when she’s on the ground screaming and crying and all the girls are mimicking her and she feels understood and cathartic and supported? and when pelle asked her do you feel held by him?? damn, this movie lol
@Thatdentalgurl
@Thatdentalgurl 5 жыл бұрын
R exactly! I really grew to like this movie the more I thought about it. I don’t think Pelle was lying when he said he was excited for Dani to come after hearing about her parents. I think he thought ahead about how supportive the women in his cult were and he knew Christian was no help. When you think about it pelle was kind of grooming her to break away from Christian and be his partner in the cult. Which isn’t far fetched to assume happens after a while hehe

Linn Ljunggren Sorry but if you havent seen it yet, Swede or not, then you cant say what the drink is since you have no context. The director has gone on to specifically cite the many different inspirations for the “cult’s” traditions in the movie, with Swedish folklore only being a fraction of it, and some of it being straight made up, despite the location being set in Sweden.

At 4:59 - "You're looking back at the movie, and thinking 'How did I get here'?" If you paid attention to the tapestries, they left nothing to the imagination. (It requires you to pay attention, so multiple viewings are recommended.) The tapestry in the beginning tells you EVERYTHING, from the deaths of Dani's family, to Christian's lack of comfort, while Pelle notices "from on high." Pelle leads the group through the woods, with Mark in the jester's cap. Pelle and Mark were in grad school together, so Pelle knew his character going in... To the welcome, with skulls and cups, to the elders diving off the cliff, to the throne of the May Queen, and the celebration... All of this is in the tapestry that we see in the first 20 seconds, with ethereal music playing, that without context we don't know what it means. But it cleverly told us everything. Over the course of the movie, there are other tapestries, including images of a burning bear, and the "love story." Nothing is hidden, but you don't know what to focus on to get those clues, until you see it multiple times.

If you're over 30, and were ever in a long relationship or two, this film will likely resonate with you. I have been on both sides, being the distant boyfriend as well as being emotionally destroyed by a girlfriend. So, I can relate to both sides of this amazing break up film, and it made the experience very personal on many levels. Second, if you have ever had to endure a rough untimely death in the family, or been abandoned by your family in any way having trouble dealing, you will likely find catharsis in this movie. Third, if you have ever enjoyed taking psychedelics, especially in the woods and/or at a festival, this film is must see for you. Forth, if you can appreciate a movie that honors a Kubrickian style cinematography, as well as liking dark comedy, this movie will impress you thoroughly. Lastly, if you like movies that stay with you for days or weeks, haunting your mind with thoughts, images, and emotions, Midsommar will do just that.

Bunch of cult folks committing a ritual they do every 90 years where the sacrifice 9 people. 4 from the villages 4 outside and 1 from either. Other than that they do some odd traditions that are passed down like drinking periods and eating pubes, interbreeding to produce a pure minded person. Pretty straightforward. On the othe hand hereditary has a demon possessing multiple family members, headless corpses walking around, not knowing what's being done by the cult and what's supernaturally being done by Paimon. The end of hereditary is just like a start of the apocalypse whereas end of midsommar just seems like she joined the family and will live their ways.

I definitely agree with you when it comes to the gratuitous gore, it got to be a little exhausting at times. I have no problem with gore, but the more it's shown, the less impact it has on me. What I did think this movie did incredibly well was its portrayal of Dani's anxiety and panic attacks. That may be attributed more to Florence Pugh's performance than Ari Aster's script and direction, but either way it was one of the most realistic portrayals I've seen in film. As someone who suffers from panic attacks, I could genuinely feel what she was going through and it did not feel fake or forced in any way. I think Pugh was my favorite part about Midsommar to be honest, that or the cinematography.

I’m also a highly sensitive person. I don’t mind gore if it’s done correctly. I was so traumatized by the decapitation in Hereditary that I read the script to this one before I saw it. I was STILL so thrown by that scene with the old people. We saw that hit from every angle and then we had to watch them cookin later. You’re so right about his ability to jump cut. I cover my face a lot when things are gory, and you truly cannot avoid it. You think it’s over, but he’s really just going to throw you back in. These films are true horror. I may feel like I hate them, but when I think of how much time I spend dissecting them and analyzing them, I know that they’ve truly affected me the way the director intended.

Just watched it. *possible spoilers* In my opinion, it's not scary in the least, but slightly disturbing, especially that opening scene. Was more fairytale-esque. For the most part, I thought it was funny as hell. My friend and I were cracking up. Some very darkly funny scenes. All that said, it made my top "horror" movie of the year thus far, maybe my top 10 horror of the decade. Love the cult subgenre and it surpassed the original Wickerman for me. Very similar theme/mood as Netflix's Apostle, in my opinion. And slightly reminded me (in dark humor and body horror, at least) of Tusk. The most impactful, non-funny scene for me was when she breaks down with the goup of women who encircle her and respond to/with her. The raw emotion of that scene was breathtaking. Great review, as always.

Ok, after watching it yesterday, I came back to finish the review. I don't really know if I like it yet. I do, but I don't. But one of the best things about the film that Aster didn't put in Hereditary was the audience. Noticed how throughout the film there were several occasions where a character would turn and look straight at the camera (us), which placed the audience in Sweden, watching this all unfurl as it happened. I found that to be a really cool addition. Great review!

i could agree with your point on the head trauma thing. I was surprised he went that in to the head trauma but for some reason it felt off and I couldn't pinpoint why. I think what you said can sum it up though, what I liked about hereditary was the quick cut to it but in midsommar it was repeated maybe 1 too many times. Like (SPOILERS) with the old womans head, that was fine, but they should have kept the wide shot for when the man got his head smashed, or just not even showed it. Then in the dream sequence, cut to the shot of the mans head beat in and then cut out of it. I think that would have been more effective because then its still something new. Other than that I really enjoyed it honestly. I took my boyfriend to see it and I didn't know how he'd react but we both just couldn't stop talking about it.

(Spoilers) Midsommar took me a while to digest a few days after seeing. I like a good Horror Movie or a movie that makes me think or at least makes me ponder was the violence I just seen just for shock or relative too a good story line. The reality in Horror Movies in my experience is that only 5% of them are actually good in conveying a good story along with good scares. Hereditary is worthy of the praise it recieved for AAs directing, writing, good acting top to bottom, one Horror Film in my top 10 recommended Horror Movies for Horror Fans along with Martyrs, The Witch, The Skin I Live In, Old Boy, Exorcist all which I rank high along other Academy Award Nominated Movies of any style. Since my Horror standards are so low Midsommar seemed like a masterpiece by comparison to the Anabels & Childs Plays formulaic crap. Midsommar isolated cult setting is a licensed to be as weird and disturbing as you like with no explanation of why things are happening. Truth is Midsommar doesn't offer any insightful explanation for any of the cults rituals or lore, you just have to except them for shock sake. All the characters are really dumb and except violent rituals, missing friends without discussing, not realizing there in real danger, never discussing there circumstances at any point or attempt an escape. What meaning was the cult drawing from those color splotches created by the pure soul inbread kid ?, that had some deep meaning for there cult. As long as Midsommars 2 1/2 hr run time was the writers could have had more explanations for the cult rituals & lore. Why was there friends leg sticking out of the ground so subtly at one point ?. Let raise the bar on what we declare a good Horror Movie, simple, nice looking set, some disturbing moments, the sex scene showed too many naked people I could have lived without seeing my entire life, disturbing.

After thinking about this movie I have to say that the most uncomfortable thing for me was realizing that all those people in that cult were probably living in a normal city when it was not summer. The winter scene in the beginning gives a hint that the village is quiet when it's not summer and they probably do not harvest their own food. The kids were watching Austin Powers in some cottage so they had electricity. So after those rituals they just go back to their normal lives I guess.... And that's terrifying.

I held off on commenting on this until I watched it myself. Well, I watched Suspiria and then Midsommar. Sufficed to say I couldn't sleep all night and it was all because of Midsommar. I think it's a fantastic movie. I would describe it as shocking even though it's very "matter-of-fact". Things keep happening, people go along with it and that's scary. It's very "horror" horror movie, disturbing, original and unexpected. It wasn't the generic 'teen horror' that is churned out constantly and that was incredibly refreshing. The creepy gore is more up my alley than typical bloody knife stuff. I think that the ending was genius in uncovering what development happened to Dani. It took me a while afterwards to get it but that level of awe is what I love in movies.

maybe give it a try at home at low volume because sometimes it’s the theater setting that really amplifies everything for me! or even reading about the plot and spoilers beforehand so you know what to expect :)

I have anxiety and ptsd but LOVE horror. I wouldn’t watch this movie if you’re actively grieving. I 100% agree with the lower volume. I think that would help soooo much.
