In the Norwegian city of Lillehammer, a yearly festive bonfire is lit. This happens in the ethnographic museum Maihaugen in the middle of the picturesque lake Breisjøen.
This is an important event for both, city residents and tourists because the summer solstice holiday has been widely celebrated by different peoples since ancient times and has many names. In Norway, it is called Sankthans.
Although it is a church holiday dedicated to the birth of John the Baptist, in Scandinavia Sancthans is primarily associated with the traditional pagan celebration of the summer solstice and midsummer.
On the evening of June 23, festive bonfires are lit throughout the country. Bonfires used to scare away evil spirits and have their roots in the 5th century when church and pagan traditions merged into the same folk holiday.
The Ethnographic Museum Maihaugen is one of the largest open-air museums in Northern Europe. Its founder, Anders Sandvig, collected items from old houses and farms in the Gudbrandsdalen valley. In total, on the territory of the museum there are 200 buildings built from 1200 to the present day.
One of the main attractions is the wooden Garmo Stave Church. In 1882 the church was dismantled and sold to Anders Sandvig, who brought it to Lillehammer, where it was re-erected at the Maihaugen Museum in 1920-1921.
We took our walk through the rural collection of the museum. These are buildings from Lillehammer villages dating from the period 1700-1850, as well as houses built in the 15th century.
Serenity and rural comfort reign here. Everywhere, even on the roofs of houses, wildflowers grow and bees buzz. While walking, your nose catches the smell of wood heated during the day, and friendly goats graze around you.
Also on this day, artisans demonstrated their skills and answered questions from visitors. We were attracted by dyeing threads with natural ingredients such as moss, nettle, or linden leaves. As a result, the colors turned out surprisingly bright and saturated!
And even despite the large number of people at the Maihaugen Museum that day, everyone found a cozy place in the meadow or on the shore of the lake. No one was jostling, everyone was relaxing and enjoying the summer day. Waiting for the lighting of the festive bonfire or dancing to cheerful folk melodies.
We really hope you enjoy our new video! After all, we tried very hard to convey this special mood of serenity and celebration of Sancthans in the Norwegian village.
By the way, we also visited the Summer Solstice celebration in the city of Ålesund, where the tallest bonfire in Norway is lit once a year. And the mood of the holiday is radically different! Here is the link to this video: • This Happens ONLY In Å...
