Back in the early 80s, I spent about a half hour talking with George Gay. I will never forget that time. I was at an air show early in the morning. Walking along the deserted flight-line, a station wagon pulls up to a pavilion. The driver starts to unload boxes into the tent. I ask him if he needs help; so we spend about fifteen minutes loading boxes of books. With that task done, he hoped he had not delayed me from any appointment. I said, "No, the reason I'm here is to meet Ensign George Gay of Torpedo Squadron 8 off the USS Hornet and buy his book. The gentleman extended his had an replied, "I'm George Gay, happy to meet you and thanks for the help."

@@kbanghart actually I deem Valkirye was quite reliable in depicting Von Stauffenberg. He lost one hand and 2 fingers, besides losing one eye, in Africa. The movie shows his difficulties in arming the bomb due to the lack of basically 7 fingers. But regardless, I know that movies have to change elements of reality or details of history in order to be movies. The main problem of “Midway”, though, is the opposite: it sticks too much to history. The final result is a flat movie with really few emotional moments of any sort. It should have been written in a different way, imho. Take this scene, for instance. It’s too much a documentary-like shot than a movie-like shot. We feel nothing for the character, it’s just his actions, no emotions at all, apart from the sense of wonder that someone could feel.

@@albay543 Yes i am thinking in the same way: This film is the absolute opposite to older projects like 10.000 BC. This film is just great. I think the reason behind the "Bad CGI"-claims is that we had so much crazy coloured, ultra-shiny cgi for the last 10-15 years, that the people just aren´t used anymore to a realistic look. To me, Midway looks perfect, like it could have been shot with real assets. This is a great example how CGI should look like, but most films and video games just turn this into an unrealistically coloured mess that´s so overabundant in the industry that this is setting the tone. I am just hoping that this isn´t a one-off thing, but the start of a new era of well made, historically accurate film with a real look.

My only criticism of this movie is the CGI and aerial acrobatics were a little too much/too unreal, but that's per usual for action films in the digital age now. I prefer the models and pyrotechnics of the older Star Wars films for example. Otherwise, yes, the script was solid, mostly historically accurate, and just the right amount of personal human touch to the characters for a nonfiction war film. The Japanese actors portrayed the Japanese point of view of the battle well, and I was particularly impressed with Woody's performance as Nimitz, really brought out a deeper side to his acting we hadn't seen before.

The Japanese fleet had steamed in from the east With the intentions of capturing Midway. Though they were stopped by American war ships Whose guns, bombs and torpedoes planes saved the day. All night long, I watched the fireworks of war And on the second day we turned up the heat. As big bombers from Hawaii dropped their loads On Japanese ships who soon chose to retreat. An imperial pilot came floating close by Who had been chewed on by the beasts of the sea. I couldn't help but feel passion for this is man Who had answered his call just like me. When it was over, I was plucked from the deep By men in a lifeboat just after the dawn. For two days I had watched the battle for, Midway Now it's quiet and the enemy has gone. It's my understanding this movie isn't terribly popular. Historically it is reasonably accurate and represents both side fairly well. However it has been Hollywoodized fairly heavily with catchy dialog. The officers dress uniforms look like they were slept in. Maybe they were trying to depict clothing materials as they existed in the early 40's. Accuracy of military protocol was lacking. In the Navy you don't salute indoors or in the interior of a ship. You remove your cover indoors. I'm not a fan of CGI but understand it is the now thing. Still, every time I see it applied at this level I can't help but think I'm in a video game. The 1970's version was much better. Tora Tora Tora is the ultimate naval war movie. Very historically accurate, great special effects, great shipbuilding, and no CGI. I watch it every December.
@pietrooliani32512 жыл бұрын
i understand your point on cgi but it would have been close to impossible to recreate the ships irl (even portion of them) the budget also wasn't super generous either, could they have used better cgi? yes! they even reused some model in scenes were differnt ships were present, an example of good cgi would be the eternal zero were ships were done a bit more realistically but had much less screen time

The funny thing is, Tora Tora Tora also got a tepid welcome from audiences and critics when it first came out. People thought it was too stale/impersonal (i.e. not Hollywoodized enough lol). @jakenshaken15 күн бұрын
You're wrong about the salute. Scene was correct. You remove your cover when going inside only if you are not under arms. In this case, the PO3 was wearing a sidearm and therefore kept his cover on when he went in, and thus properly saluted while wearing a cover. Navy never salutes unless wearing a cover.

It also had rather standard hero tropes that are old and tired. It wasn't as historically accurate as its fans seem to want it to be. Thought the music was unexceptional. I'm already not a fan of the director and I think he was 'miscast' as well for this pic.

a way too long flight over water, with 1 minute of action; looks to be an incredibly boring movie.

Ed Skrein did a respectable job as Dick Best however his dialect is terrible. British actors often overdo it on the American accents and they come off sounding like a bad impression of the Dead End Kids.

This entire movie was a joke. The story of the Battle Of Midway is so compelling, yet the clowns who made this movie completely distorted historical fact, maliciously skewed people’s character traits for entertainment value and omitted key participants. That’s why this film is not considered a “classic”.
