Midway / Namco Rally-X and New Rally-X Arcade Upright Restoration

I love mine. I bought it as a cheap cab with a monitor that I wanted. It looked like garbage, painted black, and turned into a Sega Baseball Championship. It turns out that the cab was plywood, in excellent shape under the black paint and weird vinyl stuff that was stuck to it, and had the original Rally X tags stapled inside. It looks pretty good now, although I don't have the original boards and have to use a raspberry pi for the time being. As a kid I played a knockoff version on the Commodore 64 called Radar Rat Race.

I love New Rally-X! Would love to get a cabinet someday. I have never seen one in the wild and it is cool that you have both boards. Great restoration!

Very cool! I’ve been a fan of Rally-X ever since I got Namco Museum Vol 1 for PS1 back in 1999. I’ve only seen four cabinets of it ever, two being cabaret cabinets, and one had been converted to Wonder Boy.

Many years ago I found my Rally-X cabaret in a thrift store for $75 ! I still love to play it. I have only played New Rally-X on the 60-1 board which has the layout messed up for the CRT. I wish the HSS guy would make a daughter board for both games and save the high scores!

I enjoyed this review. I too really like 'New Rally-X' for pretty much all the reasons you listed (especially the music!), and I think it's interesting that when Midway presented the original 'Rally-X' and 'Pac-Man' to the AMOA expo in mid-1980, the consensus was that 'Rally-X' was going to be the big hit, and not 'Pac-Man'. And ever since 'Pac-Man''s release, 'Rally-X' was kinda cast to the side. But I think both are super-important for their time, and of course still fun to play today.

New Rally-X was actually never released in the US. I've seen sources say that it was an upgrade kit here but I've never seen any evidence to support this. Namco offered a kit in Japan and parts of Europe but Midway never bothered since it was such a flop compared to Pac-Man. Anyway, this was a great restoration and that original Namco PCB is pretty cool.

My local arcade back in the day, Harrison's or "BIG H" as it was known to the locals, had a rally X but the volume was so load when you had a crash that it used to scare the shit out of me. Even to this day it still scares me.

Love my rally x! It was my first ever game I bought for $75. I unfortunately sold it a while back, but I found another! Wony let this game go, have such a soft spot for it. Mine is is #1295.

I have a Rally-x as well. But it was converted to Choplifter. I'm really not sure what to do with it. It would need the pcb, marquee, cpo and side art to restore it. I'm really not sure it's worth the amount of money it would need in parts to restore it back

I guess it really just matters if you dig Rally-X. I don't think there is any huge value in the game or large demand for it to be honest, but it is interesting.

@@VintageArcadeGal Thanks for your input. I think I am going to change it to Wonderboy. Always a game I've liked, plus it already has a Sega game in the cabinet So it will use the same harness so that will be much easier to tackle
