I have a stalker, so I don't like the idea of being recorded. I moved to get away from him. He likely already knows where I live, but I really don't like the idea of helping to give him a definite location if he doesn't. There are other reasons why someone might not want to be filmed, and it doesn't involve being a lawbreaker on their part. Plus, even as a child/teen I hated the way I sounded and looked on camera. I am a recovering anorexic, and I always felt I looked fat. Even though it's not illegal to film in public, some people just don't like to be filmed, and if they make a polite request to not be put on camera, I don't see why it shouldn't be honored. There are so many other people who are willing, why bother the people who don't want to do it?

This was the best interaction with a cop ive ever seen. I am often one to send an angry email with the video link letting their department know that they have someone on their force embarrassing them. This is the first time I've ever actually wanted to leave an email commending a cop doing an actual great job.

Officer Peters couldn't have handled that better. He was civil, knew the law and he still made enough of a contact that in his mind he knew there was nothing sketch going on. So many cops don't understand that 30 seconds of civil conversation can resolve a whole lot of things.

My son is a photographer with ambitions of becoming a film maker. He takes photos & videos of public places. Recently, as he filmed on a major public road in our town in surburban Michigan, a dude came out of his house, a block off the main road, as my son was wrapping up & putting up his gear to ask him why he was filming. My son told him it was his profession & after that, answered no more questions. My son is a young black film student from Cornell University & would appreciate a smile & a nod as he tries to pursue his passion.

In a limited set of circumstances, consent is required. For example any "creative work" meant to monetize exclusively someone's likeness. In AP's videos that does not apply as the videos are intended for public interest and they have a news gathering element.

There was a law regarding use of self image. It went out the window with paparazzi getting sued for taking pictures over fences but still in public. It went to Supreme Court and they ruled as long as your in public you can video anything you can see.
