Bill shows two plots, one corn and one milo (grain sorghum). You can see how the deer have been pounding the corn while leaving the milo alone. He then discusses which is best to plant for deer hunters. Finally, he builds an electric fence around a small corn plot that is being eaten by deer.

milo grew in my yard and after it produced, we cut the head off, and the same plant produced more heads.

Down here in Louisiana Bill we plant milo early. Right now the milo has already headed and is turning that deep rust color, almost time to cut. It will be cut in the next four weeks. After they cut it some will leave it standing and it will rehead during the deer season and man the deer will go in those fields and just stay in there feeding, and they bed up in it also. They love milo in the late late season if there is some still standing. The corn I see will soon be cut, here at the house it’s just starting to turn gold. When I see the corn Bill down here being cut I start getting that ol fever because it’s right around the corner. Stay cool Bill and have a glass of good lemonade, it won’t be long Ol Boy Chris-

Chris, that is interesting. Most years the earliest you can plant up here is late April. This year with the rains, many farmers didn't even get anything planted until June! It was about June 10-15 when I got my corn and milo planted. If we get an early frost I am in trouble. Have a great summer. -Bill

Around here, the deer will come for miles and congregate to destroy the milo fields. GMO corn fields have been drawing fewer and fewer deer with every passing year. An heirloom type corn in a food plot setting might perform better

I am really looking forward to seeing how much of the milo makes it into the fall (not eaten as soon as the seed forms). -Bill

@@midwestwhitetaildailyblogs Bill, why not fence the milo as well? I'm in central Ms. and along the Big Black river with high concentrations of deer. If I don't fence it I won't have it. I added corn this year for the first time. Planted about 3.5 acres and 2.5 soybeans. Once they mature I'm sowing legumes and winter wheat into the standing corn and beans to give them grain and greens at the same place. Looking forward to more, thanks.

Hey Bill my name is Bj and I live in Chipley Florida, For the past 3 years I have planted a summer mix for my deer , I have 2 plots probably 1/4 to 1/2 acre each , my problem is the deer don’t give it time to grow as soon as it’s about 2” tall they eat it down to nothing, the mix doesn’t have a chance to grow and produce, what do u think I should do? Any ideas? Thanks Bj

B.J. You have two options, either fence the plots like I have had to do in key areas, or switch to clover. Clover can take the browsing pressure and still produce a crop. If not, you have way, way too many deer and need to start looking for ways to take out a lot of does. Good luck. -Bill
