@mikereed3878 Mike one question couple years back you all did some willow planting did it turn out?
@mikereed38783 күн бұрын
@@chrisstroud3094it did turn out! It was doing well until fire went through there and took em all out. I’m looking at doing more but in areas that are lower risk for fire issues!

If he has an issue with eye relief might try a 1X scout scope,My daughter shot one for a couple years,Great season and videos
@mikereed38783 күн бұрын
That’s a great idea! He doesn’t have issues with most scopes. Only my custom muzzleloader setup. It’s setup for me. The stock is too long for him. It’s hard to get the proper head position. He’s just a little small right now. Thank you and take care!

So with the herd size that you have on this farm how many bucks will you harvest per season?!?! I understand each year would be different. I guess what I am getting at is there are so many that just go of natural causes. Age, injuries and infection, vehicle’s and whatever else. Just seems like there are so many other opportunities that you could harvest more, maybe just not in the caliber or age structure. We are in NY and only hunt state lands or public ground and some years we are lucky to even see a single deer. What you have is what dreams are made of.🦌🇺🇸🙏

The herd could certainly tolerate more buck harvest in regards to the numbers. This farm is special. The deer density is high and the quality genetic is there. My goal is to get all bucks to 5.5 at a minimum, select deer I try to get to 6.5 or older depending on the situation. I’m just trying to maximize potential. I’m more aggressive the last few years with harvesting old bully bucks in an effort to keep young bucks with potential around. It’s made a big difference over the last few years. There are certainly things that get some of these deer whether it be EHD, neighbors, vehicles, etc but I can’t base my decision making on that. This time of year also skewed. I spend a lot of time and energy on food for the late season. After gun season ends and winter starts to set in, a lot of deer move into the property for the winter food. I grew up in Louisiana hunting the big public swamps/timbers. We were lucky to see a deer and generally shot it for meat when we did no matter what it was. This farm IS what MY dreams were made of when I was 15 years old. A lot of my decisions through life were made with that in mind. I moved to Iowa when I was 26 and ended up buying this farm when I was 34 and was able to add onto it a few years later. Never letting go!

@ Thank You for understanding where I was going with this. I meant no Ill by it. I’m disabled now since ‘19 cancer, so it’s tough getting out with my 16Son and 12Daughter. Growing up we had a 500 acre farm. 180 woods and the rest pasture and animal feed as it was a dairy farm. I had my Son in ‘08 and Grandpa sold it in ‘09. We had quite a fantastic piece of Central NY hunting ground. Had to relearn to hunt the State Land local to me. Never had to hunt home and the farm was about an hour away. Thank You for entertaining me through your videos. As I said it’s truly a dream location seeing 100 deer on a sit.🦌🇺🇸🙏

You are welcome! I hope you continue to improve after your cancer treatments. I had a similar thing happen when I was young. Grandpa sold the family farm as I was coming of hunting age. He regretted it for years. We still made a lot of memories on the Louisiana public. Take care

I want to! I’m sure I’ll be back at some point. Many of my best friends are down there and while we are all busy doing a million different things, we always circle back to making hunts together whether out west, them coming up to Iowa, or me going down there! Always a good time! Thank you

I would like to know what muzzleloader was used. I want to upgrade from what i shoot now. I am impressed with the performance of the one used. Thanks.

It’s a custom smokeless .45 cal from Luke Horak of arrowhead rifles. Look him up. He’s a great dude and has some great options for smokeless muzzleloaders. Thank you!
