A word on the Vallejo primers: There is an issue with the ghost grey specifically rubbing or peeling off. The other colours do not share this tendency at all. Their black is superb. Apply it and after 24 hours is cures hard as stone and will be super durable. Polyurethane primers are meant to be giving a long cure time.

painting on Steve's level is like working on any other project. You need 20% of the time to get to 80% of the finished result but 80% of the time invested to get the last 20%. It's always to consider when it's "good enough" to be comparable but yet not as time consuming as a perfect finish. Steve's paint job is absolutely astonishing. Yours look terrific on its own but is recognisable in a direct comparison.

Well timed video, tonight was a random evening where a few people at the bar discovered we all love miniatures and GW in some form or another and spent a happy hour chatting about everything from blood bowl to myself using a noise marine as a lucky charm. Many KZbin channels came up including yours as being in Ipswich you're nearly local. So it was great to get home and find a new video from you . If you're ever across the border in Suffolk the Fat Cat has good beer, a chilled atmosphere and more fans of miniature painting and table top games than expected so stick your head through the door. Cracking video as always

And for some reason, using a hair dryer isn't good enough. Maybe there is a chemical process in the primer, but it seems to need time, not just the evaporation of thinners, to actually cure. I exclusively use Vallejo primers, and I usually let them set for a couple days before I try to paint them after priming. I got into 40k via WW1 and WW2 tabletop gaming, so I don't have the same attachment to GW products as alot of builders.

for the shooting-damage i have an advice: if you google battle damaged tanks, specially those with bullet holes, you will see, that the material is not only going inside and building a hole. part of the metall is going outside (sorry for my bad description, i am not english-native)

I haven't used it on resin, but I did have that same fragility problem with the Vallejo surface primer on metal. Works great on plastic, but I think that's about it. Best primer I've used so far has to be Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500. True, you have to deal with the lacquer fumes, but you could always get it in a rattle can and spray outside.

Hey when it comes to primer - especially *polyeurathane* primer is there is a huge difference between dry and cured. Most primers may feel dry after an hour but they are not cured for around 24 hours. Vallejo polyeurathane primr may take up to a week to fully cure, but when it is cured it is an incredibly durable coating. If you are protecting lead pewter miniatures Vallejo primer is a great choice as it provides a complete skin to keep out oxygen. If you want an air brush primer that dries quickly then you want something like Tamiya laquer based primer.

Those panels look great! I'm looking forward to seeing the effect of a whole Titan's worth of black armour and blue trim. IIRC Vallejo Surface Primer is supposed to be left for 24 hours to cure before painting on it, so that may be why it underperformed for you. Not so handy for a busy Titan painter!
@Zach_Walker
@Zach_Walker 2 жыл бұрын
24 hours is recommended. In my experience, so long as you're not too rough with it you can start base coating in about 2-3 hours depending on how you applied the primer in first place(thinner amount, flower improver, how densely you apply it, etc.). I still suggest waiting at least 5-6 unless you're in a rush. Part of Guy's issue was also possibly adding black ink to the grey primer. Inks take a while to dry and even then are notoriously fragile. If he continues this method it should be done like traditional batch painting, one step at a time like an assembly line. Prime one day, start texturing the next day, etc. resulting in everything having time to dry and still giving him time to work on other stuff for the channel, at least in theory.

Your method was very close but the additional time Steve put in is pretty obvious on closer inspection. Given that you’ve painted the skeleton of the titan in your style having the panels match is probably wise. I think the biggest standout is his has that purple ink while yours doesn't have any purple, otherwise the highlights and layers are all the same and the battle damage is indistinguishable.
