I really find this video helpful. I live in South Africa and none of those bags/filters came with the box and I was a brand new machine. aAl I have been doing is empty the bags and resuse them.. I will now surely look for replacement bags and filters

Amazingly, I learned a lot from your explanation and yes, my wife had done as you mentioned that so many do, and she had thrown the bag holder away when replacing the bag (which i had always done previously)! I also learned and realised about not putting the extra filter under the HEPA filter. So goes to show that you can always learn things which you normally think are so simple - I'm so glad I decided to watch tjis! Many, many thanks!

Thanks! I figured out that the plastic holder for the bag was sitting below where it should (it doesn't attach or clip on the sides) so the dirt was blowing into the entire canister.

@@jverkaik100 it's usually an issue when you buy generic bags....the fit is not good and they come loose. buy only genuine Miele bags.....it solved the issue for me. this is not the place to save money.

Appreciate this video, as I was wondering if the air clean filter should be used with the HEPA filter. Makes sense that it's one or the other! With that said, I'm also wondering about the black fabric piece that rests directly in front of the canister grille. When you open the canister, it's located directly above the nozzle that allows you to adjust the suction. I need a replacement, but I cannot find any info online. Is this piece important?

I ended up buying one. I was pleased but second time I used it the orange full bag indicator goes almost fully to the right. The bag is nearly empty since I inspected it visually. I didn’t vacuum any fine particles, just the usual dust and hair. I don’t get it, am I doing something wrong? There is nothing stuck in the hose or nozzle. I just set full power, place nozzle on rug and lift. Thinking of returning it but before I do I’m trying to find out an expert’s opinion. Thank you

Oh great did you order it from us? that's an indication you have a clog somewhere, remove the hose from the canister and work backwards by trying to drop a quarter inside the tube or hose to identify where the clog is.

More Than Vacuums - Littleton just did the coin test, no blockage, everything looks brand new. I used a flashlight to look inside the bag and there’s bit of hair right at the entrance of bag, 1-2 inches inside, like 10 hairs clumped together but that’s it. I don’t think that’s causing the problem

Yes but what you can do is put the date on it instead and when a year passes then replace it.

RikiSmiley no it just means your timer wasn't activated and should be replaced regardless if it's been a year.

I just bought a c1. My dealer also wrote the date on the side of the hepa filter as well as activating the soy timer. As you say, it has no connection to the operation of the filter other than as a reminder to change it after a year. The date of installation written on the side in magic marker can serve the same purpose.

My C3 excellence is new and I just replaced the bag however the motor appears to run hot and now I have a red vacuum flag 1/3 of the way in view when operated on max but not on any of the other power settings. Any thoughts on whether there is an obstruction somewhere despite having cleaned the inside of the hose with running water until the water runs clear?

Does the bag holder end prongs sit outside the casing - I think so but the holster appears to be loose and the bag is disengaging - I cannot afford to buy a new machine so I have ordered a new holster - is this easy to replace? I am in France and have had to order a new holster from Amazon UK!

There should be some bounce in that piece when the bag is not installed on it. The gap you see might be happening after you open the bag compartment, it is common for the lid to slightly prime the bag for removal.

Good video. One thing I am a little surprised, though, is that you didn't warn against using generic Miele vacuum bags or HEPA filters vs sticking with using Genuine Miele bags & filters. Miele is pretty stringent about this, claiming the vacuum's filtration is greatly compromised using generic bags & filters. They even invalidate your motor warranty if generic bags & filters are used! I previously owned a Miele Red Velvet S558, & found their bags are CLEARLY superior, not only in filtration, but you can stuff them right full, most other canister vacuum HEPA Cloth bags you're lucky to get the bag 1/2 full before suction & airflow is severely degraded & the bag needs changing, so while the Genuine Miele bags are pricey they are worth it.

Having used both proprietary and generic for 11 years i have found little difference in them. I have leonbergers and Berners , both long-coat large shedding machines, and have had no problem with the generic bags and filters.

The reason you have found little difference is exactly that- you're picking up hair & fibrous dirt more than sand, dust & "soil" kind of dirt. When you are picking up lots of hair & fibers, you won't notice your vacuum losing suction when the bag is half full like you would with most other brands & other vacuum's bags because the hair acts as additional filtration & some of it wouldn't make it to the bag's walls which do the filtering. For you, seeing you would go thru lots of bags due to the pet hair in your home, generic bags make sense & would perform well for you, but anyone else without pets & has normal dirt to pick up would fare much better with the Original Miele bags & their machine will clean much better for them.

Use the hepa filter. It makes zero sense to use an inferior filter when you could be assured with the Hepa filter that all particles down to bacteria size are retained by the Hepa filter. It filters 10 x's smaller than the Air Clean filter you are considering. Why breathe the tiny most critical particulate when vacuuming when you can retain those particles? The gentleman providing the video does no one any favor by suggesting to eliminate the Hepa filter. Of course, it's your lungs - do as you see fit ..... :-)

Hi, I have a problem with a Miele S5980, the cleaner does not work when switched on. The amber on light engages when connected to mains but when the hose is connected the Amber light flashes very quickly. Could this be a problem with the internal electronics in the handle, the hand controls do not work though green light works, nothing else. Sincere thanks, John.

I bought a vacuum which came pre-installed with a HEPA filter. Is there an option to buy the original dust bags on their own without the regular air filter? Otherwise I'm just throwing out a brand new filter which I won't use, doesn't seem like a good use of resources.

Currently that’s how miele packages them unless you buy the performance pack which only has the pre motor filter and a HEPA but then you’re buying 16 bags instead of 4, the performance pack is the best value though.

i called kind of late and no one answered and there was no option for leaving a message. every time i call any company about any product i own they always say it's an old model. Miele told me our S227i (which of course has no manual online) won't close until i install an expensive new bag but i'm skeptical and don't want to buy new bags only to find out that it still won't close. our other vacuum is an S248 and the filter i removed isn't quite as wide as the area it's supposed to slip into and of course the filter that came with the new bags doesn't list the number for our model so i'm not sure what size to cut this material too. Miele told me they couldn't tell me what the dimensions should be!
