The town of Mieres owes its birth to industry (mining and steel) as an industrial town to cover the housing needs of workers (similar cases to Puerto de Sagunto and neighboring La Felguera). That is why in the middle of the 19th century, the current town of Mieres began to be formed by uniting small rural hamlets located in the plains of the Caudal River. As a result of this, the Mieres plant is orthogonal except for the pre-industrial spaces. The mining railways also modulate the growth of the town.
