MIFF 2012 The Sapphires Official Trailer #1 (2012) - Australian Musical Movie
An adaptation of Tony Briggs' successful stage musical of the same name, The Sapphires is set in the late 60s when the McCrae girls -- four talented young singers from a remote Aboriginal mission -- are plucked from obscurity and branded Australia's version of The Supremes. The girls dream of becoming as big as their Motown idols and they get their chance when they're flown to Vietnam to entertain the troops, opening their eyes to a whole new world of sex, war, politics and soul.
Directed by Wayne Blair (who appeared in Blessed, MIFF 09) and starring Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens, Miranda Tapsell and Deborah Mailman reprising her role from the original play, The Sapphires had its world premiere at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
The Sapphires is a heartwarming, distinctly Australian tale full of joy, love and laughter, and featuring an unbeatable soundtrack of Motown-era soul music.

This was a great movie, just watched it the other day, the women can really sing and I like how it showed the racism that the aboriginals face. I just don't get how the white people colonize their land and disrespect the natives, so disgusting and it still happens to this very day

This was how i learned about the Australian history of the aboriginals that i was being taught in school in yr9 and because i'm black, I'm proud to be black plus it's a great movie that should help people realize that black people are just normal with different skin colour and their culture maybe slightly different and they're similar to everybody else

@@shevaunvan-hoff4069 Even though I'm American, I feel like this kind of stuff should be taught in our schools because these are real world problems that we still have and people need to be educated. I bet there are still a lot of people who don't even know that the original inhabitants of Australia were black. A lot of the white Australians still like to complain that there's too many foreigners "invading" their country but they seem to have forgotten that that wasn't even their land to begin with. Good thing we have the internet now because I'm pretty sure they weren't gonna teach us this in school. And yes, be proud of who you are, there's absolutely nothing wrong with your skin color. Black is beautiful.

Absolutely one of the best movies I've ever seen. This movie made me feel a kinship with the aborigine people.

We’re cousins, we’re just the aborigines of America while they are the aborigines of Australia. Aborigine just meaning first & original people. Do your history the trans Atlantic slave story they gave us was bullshit. Were the Indians that disappeared due to being written out of history through paper genocide and the illegilazation of expressing native culture but we were here before the native Americans that get federally recognized as tribes. We have always been here but after paper genocide we then got told we came from somewhere else and forced into assimilation indoctrination schools to “civilize” us and disconnect us from our land. Ask your grandparents.

I recently rented this movie and enjoyed it a lot. My only gripe is when they call this a true story. It's barely based on the true story. But an enjoyable movie none the less.

Dont bother, its a yawnfest. Mauboy brings her talent and amazing vocal skills but the whole movie is a typical white fella= devil vs the poor downtrodden mistreated for life black fella flick. Not a shred of truth in the movie either.
