LOW FUEL - HELICOPTER LIFE

LOW FUEL - HELICOPTER LIFE

Күн бұрын

S1E10 - I trade my faithful rotors for wings and a jet engine.
I'm taking you to California City Airport, in the Mojave Desert, in California, to meet Fred Bourdais, where I usually fly a Fouga Magister, but this time, we took the MIG 15 out!
This is the first time that I have flown on MIG 15, unlike the Fouga, I'm flying in the back seat, for takeoff and landing I ghost Fred on the handle, for the rest ... It's me!
An hour of flight told in 16 minutes, you will not see everything, but I tried to select the most beautiful.
When I fly, I listen and I feel my aircraft, it has helped me several times already ... This time, it saved us a few minutes on a hydraulic failure.
On the MIG 15, the train, the flaps, the airbrakes are hydraulic, but the brakes operate with compressed nitrogen.
This video is a little longer, but do not miss anything I put you nuggets everywhere: canyon flight, high speed, incredible landscapes ... I think this is the first video of which I am proud.
Antoine F, a subscriber found these photos taken in the canyon during our flight: theaviationist.com/2019/05/15...

@@LOWFUEL - I think you missed the point. In most of the video we see the one door open on at least the right side I believe. It is very impressive it was not ripped off when you were doing 420kts. We are marveling at how well the aircraft is built. Thanks for the amazing video. Truly impressive how smooth the flight was as well as your non fear to comment to Pilot in Command that something appears wrong. You must be an excellent humble pilot. The kind that live long.
@Fadamor

@@LOWFUEL On take off the gear clearly closed properly, but in subsequent clips the gear door is back down, exposing the inside of the gear bay to turbulent forces not intended. This implies the hydraulic problem happened much earlier in the flight than when first noticed and flying around at high speed with the door extended certainly isn't helping things. I guess the MiG never bothered with gear indicator lights?

Fantastic video brother! Love it! I had a similar flight in an F-15 but instead of above the floor of the Mojave Desert, it was above the waves of the Gulf of Mexico and it was the most intense, exciting, invigorating, free feeling that a man can ever experience!! Nothing will ever beat that experience for me unless I get a ride in an SR-71 or equivalent but there’s zero chance of that ever occurring so my F-15 flight will be the best thing to ever occur in my life!! I wish I was still around aircraft, I miss them everyday!! You are a good pilot brother!! Always trust your intuition when you feel or hear something that is not normal, your intuition will keep you alive, every time!! It probly saved you this time as well, good job!! And thank you for taking us along in a MiG!! That’s a priceless experience few will ever have the opportunity to live!

Oh man! The Mig 15 -17 is one of my favorites. I grew up in the 60's & 70's. My father flew F-4 Phantoms. He retired as "Wild Weasel" @ George AFB. It's long gone now. ( it's just a logistics staging are and some repair training now) But back then, when he was still flying, it was common place to hear sonic booms on a daily basis. Even Edwards is quiet nowa-days. I agree that the Mojave is mystical. Look at the accomplishments and sacrifices that have taken place there since 1940. I was a new aircraft mechanic at Edwards AFB in 1977. CE Anderson, Chuck Yeager, Pete Knight, and Gen. Doolittle were still active. I was very fortunate to see, meet and enjoy so many heroes of aviation. The morning after I left the Air Force I made my first sky diving jump from Cal City and broke my ankle! I worked at Mojave Airport on F-86, F-100, FJ-4 and T-38s. Let's not forget Pancho Barnes!

I have lived 20 miles west of California City in the Tehachapi mountains since 1987 and worked in that desert until 2008. During those 21 years I have driven cars, trucks and motorcycles over hundreds of miles. This was the first time I got to see what it looks like flying over it. Thanks for the ride. I'd love to actually experience that one day but this was a great low altitude view. Thank you for the video and I'm glad you made it safely back. Don .

This is some of the best flying (and on the ground) video I have ever seen. Incredibly well filmed and edited and the especially in combination with the music! (What is the music, by the way?) It's funny, you look at a MIG 15 on the ground (I have seen them in person) and they look like some pieces of tin patched together with a propane burner on the back. You say to yourself- "this ugly piece of junk can fly??". Then you see it in the air like this- and WOW- it is speed and gracefulness.

In my helicopters, I am really used to listen to my engine and mechanic. After hundreds of hours listening of them, I know their "normal" noise, when it changes...
