Was flying the MLD from a soviet tech tree extensively for the last month and learned some useful "trick" about comfortable utilizing wing sweep in combat: During the take-off, switch from automatic sweep to manual, set wings to the "landing mode" manually (wing sweep axis = 0%) and then return to automatic. From now on, every switch from auto to manual will immediately put your wing in max forward position, giving excellent turning performance at close dogfights under 850 km/h IAS. After that i most of time fly with auto-sweep, but if needed - "turn-mode" could be activated with one button, without manually tuning the sweep axis every time. And trust me - full forward wings allows Mig-23 to outturn almost any craft in the game. The only downside is that one have to do the full procedure at the start of every battle, sadly. As far as i know we can`t set manual wing axis starting point.

Tip for mig-23 pilots. Dont try to outturn a F-5 freedom fighter, you gonna get clapped. It can keep sustained turn for a lot longer than you can, also in simulator. Any F-5 pilot with mediocre-good and beyond skill in the plane will 9/10 times clap you if you turn fight. Personally I've really only lost turn fights due to enemy teammates. Best way to kill a F-5 is to head on, and clap it with your R-60M (assuming you are on M not MLD) if MLD use SARH.

This is actually wrong, in game anyway. The MiG-23's optimum wing angle for turning isn't full spread but about 25-30 degrees back. That is how IRL it got its best flight performance, in WT this is incorrect as having the wings fully spread works better, when it actually shouldn't. This also applies to the F-14, its best with a little sweep, not full spread. For both aircraft, full spread was only ever actually used for takeoff and landing, NEVER in combat, as not only was it not optimal as I already said, but it could severely damage the wings, airframe, or sweeping mechanism.

I use the R60Ms because they’re more flexible if using R-23Ts alongside and I can use them at a range where flares basically have no impact or can’t be deployed in time, both in rear aspect and a head-on. I use the R-23Ts to intercept targets at a distance and spook them with a long range missile that they didn’t see coming. I particularly love coming in at a side aspect with IRST and then leading my plane a bit before firing the missile. I also love to dogfight with the 23M and the R60Ms are much better for that than the R-13M1s. I still like using the R-13M1s though, it’s just that after the flare resistance nerf, I can’t get the R-13M1 to work as well as I can get the R-23T and R-60M to work.

R13s are kind of obsolete here since it is really a medium range IR missile like the Aim9D, but the R23 basically negated it for me atleast

@@OtterMusician After the flare resistance changes, the R60Ms seem to be only a little worse in terms of flare resistance, but can track a target better to avoid flares unless the target stops afterburning and pops their flares towards the missile. Most of the other missiles in the game can do the same, but they usually can’t pull as many G’s in as short of an amount of time.

The opponents RWR will not alert them if you're around 30 degrees above or below their centerline when they are flying. This means you can fire with the look down / shoot down mode from altitude or up at people above you without them knowing you were there. In frontal engagements (as this will provide the best lock from altitude in look down mode) you can kill enemies with extreme range and prejudice with the R23R vs the T as you simply won't achieve a frontal lock from good enough distance with the T. The R23T can be played to similar effect but must be fired from rear aspect at distances that matter and can be easily flared off, even by accident. The enemy may also simply turn towards you and the distance will be too great - the lock is lost. It's an opinion which one is "better" but I thought I'd mention some use cases for the radar homing model here. Nice video.

Everything is situational. The two R-23T and four R-60MK was my go-to loadout for this plane, but there are some players who swear by the SARH missiles.

With the new EC maps radar missles have been more useful. Also pulse doppler radars let them lock low targets. So only recently Fox 1 becoming good.

So I recently picked this plane up and apparently they changed how the missiles are unlocked. It still carries all the same weapons, but now the R-13 is the standard missile (yay!) but... You now have to unlock the R-3S in order to move on, and the R-3S is NOT unlocked by default. Yeah, I don't get it either.

Normally radar is unable to "look down" as the ground reflects everything "blinding" the radar. Look down shoot down implies there is some way for the radar set to filter out the ground clutter allowing the scope to search below the horizon, lock and hold a firing solution on a target.

I just used this to grind up to the 23MLA so I want to offer some more recent perspective in case someone finds it useful (not likely since it's an older event plane but hey). Despite the decent BR of 11.0 I found the 23MF to be a bit troubled. It has pretty good flight performance -- the swing wing gives it a 'best of both worlds' appeal, capable of high speeds with swept wings but also adept at dogfighting when unswept. It holds its energy pretty well too, letting you out-rate most delta wings and similar speed-bleeding aircraft. The R60M's are good, if short range and very flare hungry, but the R23's are... not great. The 23T is easily flarable in my experience and has roughly the same range/performance as an R-13, while the 23R struggles due to lack of an ACM mode for acquiring targets and a very poor radar seeker that makes it useful only when there is no ground clutter. I played dozens of games trying to use the R23's before realizing my hit rate with them was awful, I swapped to an R-13 and kept one R-23R for niche use cases and never looked back (R-13M1's are pretty dang good missiles... underrated?). The low amount of countermeasures sucks, but it's fast and manoeuvrable enough to get by if you're disciplined in deploying them. Also... I really hate that 23mm cannon, at this BR it is dreadfully outdated compared to something like a 20mm vulcan, has too low of ammo for comfort, and many high-speed and/or high-aspect shots are impossible due to its low velocity. Takes a lot of getting used to, even if it hits like a truck. When I got the 23MLA I was shocked how much more competitive I felt, even at the higher 11.3 BR. The R24 missiles were both *fantastic* and the flight performance was even better. Playing them back-to-back made the differences stand out clearly and unfortunately the 23MF does not compare very well BR for BR. Sucks, cause I kinda liked the 23MF, but most of its firepower is short range and easily defeated by flares so its killing power is limited. It's still competitive (I did fine with it with roughly a 2:1 kdr), and has a performance edge on aircraft like Mig21's, Phantoms, and F5's that make it potentially lethal in a downtier... just doesn't excel like I hoped it would given how high-tech it is for its BR. Definitely not worth getting at current market prices, but if you already had a coupon or if money is no object, you could do worse.

G'day Tim, Through observation of several month watching you I guess "5" is your designation number across all aircraft, Is there a reason to this? might it be personal preference to the number a designation from a film/game. Well I have experience in the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-27M and no Rank VI/VII for Germany as such this MiG-23MF will ba fine addition to my DDR equipment although I'll wait for the spam to die down before even thinking to field it. Yes. The MTI and LD modes still trigger the RWR, but the IRST is passive and does not.

MTI is still a radar mode. What you want for the R-60MK and R-24T is to use the IRST mode, which uses the infrared seeker of the plane and is passive. Ultra modern passive radars won't be in for a very very long time if ever.

For the newbies that are grinding this plane: Please. Learn. To. Play. Top tier gameplay is a whole new world and is very different from low tier gameplay. If you dont have a top tier jet, or not experienced in general, i would recommend you to sell the coupon or refrain from using it till you have the experience. Trust me, i learned this the hard way from last year's WINTER event.

what jet? If it is F-84, play it like twitter. Fly straight, stay fast, or you will get cancelled If it is F-80 or 262, try to BnZ from 3km and target people that are busy shooting at your teammates. You may want to skip the 262A and play the C instead though. They are much better

I have to disagree with you. Top tier plays out very differently even compared to 9.0-10.0 games. It doesn't matter if a player grinded for months to get top tier or got it through event. There will be learning to do all the same. The MiG-21PFM was overtired at launch and is very easy to screw up with. The 23 on the other hand is very forgiving. Yes, the initial wave of stock 23MFs will fare horribly but eventually they will learn. From the point of view of an average free to play player this event reward is equivalent to skipping a whole year of grinding.

It's an infared missile, basically heat seeking guidiance missile. And it's useful in longer engagement compare to R-60.

The mig-23m and german mig-23mf are really bad ground pounders, it was not their intended roles. That and, let's face it, russia is years behind when it comes to ground attack in war thunder and IRL.

Is there a reason why you would take the R-23T (IR variant) over the R60MKs, if both are capable of all-aspect shots? For example to choose between the loadout of 6x R60MKs, as opposed to 4x R60MKs and 2x R23Ts.

R60 has poor range compared to r23

R-60M's all-aspect is limited all-aspect. Meaning it only locks up to 2km headon against afterburner. Not to mention even in side-aspect the chase range is only goes up to 3km before your missile is out of energy R-23T is true all-aspect and can lock from up to atleast 6km headon. And have enough juice to side aspect from 10km

It’s much closer to 3km, but I don’t recommend firing until your around 2km away so that the enemy has less time to react by flaring and turning. If they only flare or only turn, the missile still has a decent chance to hit them and if it just gets decently close, then that’s almost a guaranteed kill.

I'm only grinding the air stars but it is easy as fuck. You get two stars just by playing the game, don't even have to go out of your way and those are the 40 kills and 9 wins. The 3rd is either the bombing one which is easy to get or the get 4 kills in a game which there is a good chance you will get while completing stars 1 and 2

Yes - just keep in mind that the IRST doesn't know distance, so be confident of your range to target before you launch. IRST can NOT guide sarh missiles.

Used the R24 on MLD extensively. Too many people are good with flares. Heatseekers rarely hit for me even at >1km ranges where I’d think the enemy reaction time would be almost nothing yet they still flare them off with 1-2 flares and it’s a waste. The radar? Are they coming at me? They die. Use at max 7km and min 4km they are not quite an E-2 they take a bit longer to track off the rail but that’s the trade off for being the god king of a late game dogfight if you can live long enough to see it. No matter how hard they flare or chaff, if you are in MTI mode they will die before they break lock or if they get really lucky and somehow dodge but at least for the R24 (not R23) they almost never dodge it in time of fired at correct range. I’ve no need for this as I have the MLD in Russian tree. From my experience too many people flare even when they shouldn’t know a missile is coming for them and let me tell you this I can head on an F-4J and win almost everytime and taking him out takes a big threat off the field since most people are too dumb to know how to avoid PD radar properly and just die (I’d know I kill people with PD all the time) and the less head on potential the enemy team has the easier it is for Russians to win

@@XEyedN00b proof for anyone who thinks the R23/24T is a viable choice because 9/10 times the radar will hold lock until the kill easily. Also the R23/R24Teamkiller loves to switch targets mid-flight and kill a friendly in is MASSIVE seeker view the radar also won’t do that

I manage to hit over 50% of my R24T However, I only fire on unsuspecting targets. It's pointless wasting them in head ons where they will see it coming.

@@swisstraeng EVERYONE has flares and they are super effective. Chaff is nearly useless and works poorly. If I have two options of the same missile you bet I want the radar one unless my radar is utter trash…which it’s not bad at all.

I mean the 9L is so, so much better than the R60MK, that it's not even comparable. 60Ms will go for flares like nothing else, whereas the 9L has ECCM which would be completely broken.
