I've seen other reviewers get excellent results with this machine, using both Mig torch and spool gun. They were also running with a longer stickout (3/4 to one inch) and about 40-45 cfh Argon...the results were pretty impressive, even on 1/16 aluminum. Most were using 5356 wire.

Cool, the machine is capable and with some practice anyone can get results over time. That's a lot of gas flow, but it's probably necessary given how much black spot I got. Aluminum is definitely different than steel.

Thx for the video. I am a little confused as to why you couldn’t increase the wire feed speed to stop the burnback. Could you not just increase the amps ( which is the same as increasing the wire feed speed is it not?) and keep the voltage the same? Did the machine not allow you to do this or did the machine increase the voltage when you tried to increase the amps? I just bought one of these machines to weld a small aluminum boat as tig welding it was way too slow. I am a simple hobbyist welder. I have to say that it is somewhat difficult for me to understand all the nuances of the parameter settings. Thanks for your help. Cheers, John

This machine has some automatic settings programmed into it. This is why I had to use the specific wire the machine was calibrated for. If you increase the amps, you are increasing the heat too. If I remember right, there is a small window of adjustment, but it takes practice to get a good setting that works. A few watchers of this video suggested using a longer stickout length for aluminum. Keep trying different settings and I think you will find a combo of wire and settings that work well for you.

Yes, it's a bit awkward and heavy. That is why hand position and support is even more important. I use my left hand with a heavy glove to keep the stick out length constant.

Honestly seems like more trouble than it's worth, especially as you're an accomplished TIG welder. I've only ever used MIG for my project, but I think I'd rather learn TIG for aluminium. Have you seen the Decapower all-in-one welders?

It was fun to try a new method. I recommend it for those who haven't learned TIG but need to get some aluminum welding done. I think the decapower welders are similar, but I haven't tried. I'm just thankful that there are some well priced options now.

If you are burning back you need more wire speed and or stick out. Aluminum needs 3/4"stickout. All mig setup is really the same. If you are too hot (to much voltage for a given wire speed) then add more wire to the puddle.

It doesn't matter what you do with DC aluminum it always sooty from not having the AC side of the current to clean the oxidation off!!!

You need to clean and wipe you material with acetone, alcohol, or thinner after wire brushing or scotch pad. More clean More better results.

Thanks, the metal was pretty clean. If it was more than scrap metal practice I probably would clean more. Clean metal is good advice though.

No no you need a dedicated stainless steel wire brush to clean the surface oxide. Pre heating is also a good tip (especially for the thicker materials) and can help remove the oxide.

And when you are finishing your weld give it an extra zap to get rid of the crater!!! Amd stack of dimes is when you tig weld and it’s an expression when you tig weld and how it looks at the end of the weld when you are adding filler wire my hand.
