This is part 8 of the mig welding basics series. for a more detailed article on mig welding overhead go here goo.gl/lcg27W
visit the weldmonger store weldmongerstore...
Overhead Tee joint drill. This is a multipass Tee in overhead position. Overhead mig welding is done using pretty much the same way flat and overhead are done. Using almost the same settings.
for this video, I set the machine to 20 volts and 300 inches per minute of wire speed using .035" of er70s6 wire.

I started welding in 1963. Here, some 51 years later, I still run across something I did not know. But I do know this, 90% of a good weld is knowledge and one helluva good machine. Ya gotta have both in your favor to do a good job. Never compromise on tool quality. Buy the best tools there are to offer. Cheap tools is never a good practice.

Do not agree.. a cheap welder is better than no welder. Everybody has to start from somewere. I don't think they suddenly buy welders like 2-5000$. Learn welding with a cheap machine and then build up to a professional one.

Hey Jody, a couple things I'd like to see you touch on for your MIG series would be working with thicker, higher current wire. I use .052 every day and would like to see if you have any tips or tricks other than the widely used "whip back." Especially for tight corners. Another thing would be for tack filling gaps. Not trying to be a troll but I would run those volts a volt or 2 higher and the wire speed up quite a bit more. Your root had a big crown on it and what looked like lack of fusion in a spot or 2. You should crank it up and move faster, Itll give you a flatter and more burned in bead

Great video. Learned alot. How comes that in the USA everybody calls MAG welding MIG welding? Its only MIG when you weld with pure Argon/Helium. So actualy when you use mixgas when welding steel and lets say 75% Argon and 25%Co2 you are using active gas ( Metal active Gas) And not Metal Inert Gas. MAG it is :)

Love your videos. You do great work!! I just wanted to say that when I ran overhead fillets with 0.45 at the ship yard I ran very hot but held a very hard push angle with zero weaving. It was 100s hard wire with 95/5 gas. I always had my tip flush with my barrel. I always found if I tried any sort of weave or dddnt push a hard angle I always had a bit of a lip on my bottom passes. I found this true especially if I was running 1/16 100s wire. But I always had great penetration!! Keep up the great videos!!!Pete Dellarma Maine

As far as I know, a beautiful weld is not always a strong one. He is making sure it penetrates the edges and assists the penetration in the corner by maintaining temperature and control of the puddle. Moving the gun around just helps the control. It always depends on settings, machine, wire, material etc.

I'm not a certified welder, nor in any way in a position to give advice. But as I have ruined several tips and nozzles over the years learning to weld over head, I will try to share what seems to work for me to minimize the gun damage and frustration of having the weld puddle fall into the nozzle. Settings, joint preparation, and practice. Clean all mill scale and contaminants from the joint surfaces. A clean and well prepared joint is highest priority IMO. Choose the wire that fits the weld type and position. Then set your welder to the wire and position. Then practice..........a lot. I find using a course grinder to rough the surface when cleaning it works well for me. I also tend to use the same puddle pattern for over head as I do for vertical up. Seems to keep the heavy crowning somewhat in check. But again, that is only what works for me and I am in no way a professional.

ITS BETTER TO ROTATE THE PC. single pass 3/16-1/4.the weld you're making looks better for thick ferrous multi pass. our overhead would have to be 30" no stops ,fast paced production we couldn't sit around. I noticed a difference in the outside burn marks, overhead was much thinner pushing.

My biggest concern with welding is how do you know your weld is strong enough. For example. If I back half a truck and weld a new piece of metal or frame how can I be sure my weld is strong enough. Or if I build a custom ladder rack for a truck to hold planks of wood and other materials. Is it just laying a good bead down and stack some Dims and I’m good lol is there any way for reassurance? Thank you!
