I started welding in 1963. Here, some 51 years later, I still run across something I did not know. But I do know this, 90% of a good weld is knowledge and one helluva good machine. Ya gotta have both in your favor to do a good job. Never compromise on tool quality. Buy the best tools there are to offer. Cheap tools is never a good practice.
@godzilla511967 жыл бұрын
raginroadrunner I was always told that you pay for a nice tool once from your walllet. You pay for a cheap tool every time you have to use it, but you pay with your sanity

Do not agree.. a cheap welder is better than no welder. Everybody has to start from somewere. I don't think they suddenly buy welders like 2-5000$. Learn welding with a cheap machine and then build up to a professional one.

Thanks for this Jody! I'm running a motorcycle workshop for people with various disabilities who are looking to pick up meaningful job skills. We've got a pretty nice MIG machine powered by 380v but it's only ever used to bake stuff together in the ugliest way possible. Nothing mission-critical, don't worry. I've watched this series in one go. Very practical and to the point. Starting out with welding can be pretty overwhelming, but I feel like I at least know the very basics to set the machine and start practicing myself. Thanks again!

Love your videos. You do great work!! I just wanted to say that when I ran overhead fillets with 0.45 at the ship yard I ran very hot but held a very hard push angle with zero weaving. It was 100s hard wire with 95/5 gas. I always had my tip flush with my barrel. I always found if I tried any sort of weave or dddnt push a hard angle I always had a bit of a lip on my bottom passes. I found this true especially if I was running 1/16 100s wire. But I always had great penetration!! Keep up the great videos!!!Pete Dellarma Maine

Hey Jody, a couple things I'd like to see you touch on for your MIG series would be working with thicker, higher current wire. I use .052 every day and would like to see if you have any tips or tricks other than the widely used "whip back." Especially for tight corners. Another thing would be for tack filling gaps. Thanks again, A fan and student of your page.

Thanks. I was saw high voltage got it melted but my movment was wrong to point of bolders dropping. Then ended up going low voltage & drooping welds then cut welds with cutoff wheel to flatten butt weld. The comment about the wire to long having time to heat up become weak & do nothing - was really helpful. I can think these things - but when your under pressure & dont have time to think = thanks.

I welded 10 ft cyliders 10 ga stainless first time I left heat alone welded good flat and vert was good very good weld .Overhead blow holes right though it. Delta 452 miller. ITS BETTER TO ROTATE THE PC. single pass 3/16-1/4.the weld you're making looks better for thick ferrous multi pass. our overhead would have to be 30" no stops ,fast paced production we couldn't sit around. I noticed a difference in the outside burn marks,overhead was much thinner pushing.

I put a new tip in my welder last night (I think this is the first time i've replaced it since new, have run maybe 5lbs of wire through it total) and I was like like "man, this tip is really tight, it's a pita to tighten this thing all the way in". I now realize this must be intentional, and looking at the tip it's recessed inside the cup like 1/8" to 3/16". So I'm going to toss it and put a new tip in a check it as it's going in so I stop flush. I'm bad enough about pulling away from the material anyways, having it recessed is only making the problem worse for me. Thanks for the simple tip that I never hear people talk about
@michaelchadwick34973 жыл бұрын
Hold on to your old tips if your the one paying for them . You can take tip cleaners for a torch and clean them out, spray some anti- spatter through them and get a little more use out of them.

thanks jodi > great explanations, good demos and really think the 'universal' holder w/ the supply of practice plates is a cool idea - 'students' send in there stuff, have it evaluated, tested, x-rayed or whatever; kinda like everybody tries a 'same' setting and then a 'personal best' setting, etc. - not everyone has a school/instructor situation is why i mentioned the sent in evaluation.

My biggest concern with welding is how do you know your weld is strong enough. For example. If I back half a truck and weld a new piece of metal or frame how can I be sure my weld is strong enough. Or if I build a custom ladder rack for a truck to hold planks of wood and other materials. Is it just laying a good bead down and stack some Dims and I’m good lol is there any way for reassurance? Thank you!

I knowest you use a tampered nozzle with a blunt nose contact tip, but have you ever tried a tampered contact tip. You get maximum shelding gas around the puddle, also I use 95-5 mixture. 95% Argon and 5% CO2.
@lobo4short10 жыл бұрын
What gas are you using? I use 90/10 and .035 hard wire 1/16" to 1" with a miller 252. We have about 4 of them at work. Very versatile for mild steel. We up hand all structural steel 3/16 and up. From flat to over head i don't change a thing.
