I wish I had seen this earlier. I tried just one plant and I haven't pruned it properly but have now got light green fruits on two branches and don't want to lose either ... and the plant seems to have got stuck at that stage. Going to plant a few more this week and will religiously follow your advice. Thanks so much. Very clearly explained.

This is what I do with my tomatoes. I use the elastic string for the last couple years and it works great.
@akaisify
@akaisify 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, elastic material works best! Instead of throwing them in the trash, I reuse my old nylon pantyhose/tights that have one hole too many :) just cut them into bands, they allow the plant to sway in the wind without damaging the stem and they dry super fast even after a heavy rainfall (minimizing the possibility of blight). I make sure to pick them all up after the season's ended.

I love your videos. I have been growing for 3 years now. I have a greenhouse and have hydroponics and grow beds in it. I have watched maybe over 100 videos on growing different plants. Not all yours. What you are teaching on your videos is amazing. Thanks. I'm trying to get to where my plants (tomatoes) grow lots of clusters. I have not seen single stem idea before. I've seen double stem and am doing that now. I am growing zucchini as well. I have been growing them upright to keep air flow like you have said. It's working. So many things I want to touch on but not now. Just thanks for sharing. Dan Bell in Modesto Ca. 103 today outside.

Luke I tried your tips and it seem a little drastic at first but I worked! Last year I watched your old video about the elastic tide and I decided to try it cause last year I had a huge juggle of tomato plants but no tomatoes. I’m in California in zone 9a and I’ve already harvest about ten pounds of tomatoes just in the last three weeks. This totally works. I need to fertilize a second round of trifecta before the full heat comes. Thanks for all your tips and seeds. I’m so impressed with my Homestead tomatoes plants from your seed store. They are my top producers, those and the Roma. OMG.

Great info! I’m new to gardening and LOVING IT! I had no idea that we have two types of tomatoes.....DOH! I set up my bed for indeterminate growth (prior to learning the difference and actually identifying the plant I intended to place in that spot) then proceeded to trim the determinate plants as if they were indeterminate. To say they were not happy is an understatement. But much like the first child breaking in new parents, the plants are surviving. I purchased seeds and other helpful items from your website and I’m looking forward to learning more!

sorry for the bombardment of questions, I'm trying to prepare for my first year of outdoor gardening that isn't on a balcony. being in Finland it is actually quite difficult get my hands on decent fertilizers, and actually most soil amendments I used back in Canada. I'm trying to replicate your fertilizer manually as best as possible. of all the ingredients you have brilliantly put together, I've made a list of slow and fast acting ingredients. kelp meal, dolomite lime, Epsom salt, basalt rock dust, alfalfa meal, and liquid ferrous sulfate. all that being said is sufficient or am I missing important elements? sorry again for all the questions. Thank you in advance!

Really enjoying your show! My 3rd year growing indeterminates and afraid this year because it's only mid April in Ontario and I have 17 plants indoors already about a foot tall and full of foliage. Watched another show you did talking about growing too fast and risk of transplant shock when planting outside when plants are too mature. I only planted 1 month ago and looking for advice around planning ahead for a successful crop given the fast growth rate. Weather probably won't be right until about June I think. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks much for your awesome show and valuable gardening info!

One thing that is really troubling me right now is how to get tomatoes growing successfully from seed. I have always purchased small 4" potted plants as starters, but this year I really wanted to try my hand at growing from seed. Mostly EVERYTHING else has grown well , but the tomatoes are just taunting me. Nothing but a few sprouts of their initial leaves, and then...nothing. Any ideas you could throw my way would be appreciated!

At what size should you give the big prune and start staking? I have some little seedlings from the nursery that just went in; but your example plant is much more mature. Can a younger plant handle all that pruning, or should you wait it out a little?

What can I spray on the soil as a natural fungicide for blight. Neem oil? Anything else? If you don't have blight fungus in your soil you are a lucky gardener! You've motivated me to amend and replenish my soil this year & may be this will help! Also trying Trifecta.. first time. I have raised beds & the blight is worse or at least constant every year now. I'm a long time gardener. I discard all blighted foliage. Last year was so wet and humid in NY State, even the drastic pruning method made no difference. Had to BUY tomatoes for canning last year. So sad!

Hi Luke. I watched all your tomato videos- they are staled and I’m doing the single stem method for pruning. I used about 2 table spoons of the trifecta fertilizer in the beginning and Haven’t fertilized since. I am noticing quite a bit of blossom drop and I’m very sad. Otherwise the plant looks beautiful and healthy. I do have some baby tomatoes but there are whole sections with 6-8 flowers where over half of them have dried up. Help please!

Ik this is 2 years later but Luke, I think you may have to revisit the sunlight makes tomatoes ripen with more sugars better. A simple Google search shows this isn't exactly true and that over exposure to light leads to sun sculd, which may or may not make tomatoes taste bit worse. Also, removing that many leaves means that plants have less photosynthesis which means less sugars and less plant foods. Therefore, wouldn't the tomatoes have overall less energy for the ripening tomatoes if the only leaves they ever have are the ones close to the top? Like I totally understand prunning the first maybe 12 inches or 18 inches. Nobody wants to deal with blight and to get a plant to a high enough brix to resist blight is hard enough. But removing all of them all the time like I see most gardners do, idk. Seems unnatural when you consider the plant likes to make leaves a lot.

True about single stem, but I leave mine more of a bush like, I get tons of tomatoes this way! I’ve never had any issues doing it that way! At one time I had tons of tomatoe plants and would get 20 to 30+ tomatoes a DAY! I never really ruined them except suckers! And my tomatoes are real sweet like, probably type of tomatoes I planted? I grow a LOT of grape tomatoes, sweets! I get TONS of tomatoes and every year I get more new plants just from dropping tomatoes from the year before. I drop them onto the ground when they can’t be eaten, like example a bird got to one. Right now I have a TON of tomatoes on my side growth, I don’t pick them all. Also, one year I pruned them back like you’re showing, but the plants did bad! I live in central Florida and the extra leaves help shade, but not a ton left. If it’s pruned a LOT the plants can’t survive the heat here for some reason. Leaving them extremely exposed For staking I use same stakes because it is cheap! I use yarn... yep, yarn! Never have had a problem. We can’t just push the stake in the ground, it’s to Sandy. We use a mallet and rebar to creat a hole, then put steak in. I put my stakes in when my plants are about 1/2 to 1 ft tall. This way it’s ready and doesn’t damage the roots! It’s easier that way! As the plant grows, it’s easier to tie up. Especially the ground, it’s already pretty soft from sowing. Also I put my stake just a bit closer because of it bending, not good.

I have watched this video a few times and still find a little nugget of information that helpful each time! One question I have is, can you put the steak in first then plant your tomato plant at the base? Or would it impead its initial growth?

This is my first year with indeterminates, and when I pruned the first suckers I accidently cut off the main growing tip on one! Lol So I'm letting a sucker grow at the top of it to take over! Thanks for all you do Luke!

I use old t-shirt material cut into strips. It is soft, gives, and is recycling something I would throw away. Great ideas.

Really enjoying your channel. How would I incorporate nitrogen fixers such as peas to help the nitrogen levels? Are the nitrogen levels sufficient enough from peas or other nitrogen fixers for tomatoes? I will incorporate mashed up alfalfa pellets as well. And if nitrogen fixers are sufficient for early growth, how many pea plants would i need for say 12 tomato plants? Must i do anything to the peas to prevent it from using the nitrogen it stored from it using it itself? Thanks a lot i really love your videos. I’m a Canadian gardener about to experience my first gardening season in Finland, however, i only ever grew in pots.

Determinates have their purpose though, if you don't have much time to prune and harvest.

I let my variety needs decide. I like to make homemade sauce, so I need a lot of romas, which are determinate. But my beefsteaks or cherry tomatoes I prefer indeterminate.

@@ThesmartestTem yup, I made sauce for the first time last year and was surprised how much they cooked down (I grew no paste tomatoes at all). this year I have 4 varieties of determinate pastes planted. fingers crossed for more sauce

3:10 Phosphorus is going to give you the root growth your want (it speeds up root production), and the potassium is going to give you higher brix/sweeter fruit. Potassium determines "the quality" of your fruit. All plants start to deplete potassium dramatically during fruit and flowering. You have to replace that potassium, as the plant uses it up during fruit/flowering, if you want to keep high brix/sweet tasting, gorgeous looking fruit.

I’ve been trying to get more accurate info on the best ratios of N P K throughout the growing season. I’m surprised that I’m not finding more on some of these channels on this fundamental. I think your point about K is correct and my organic fertilizer has a rather low number. Curious what you might recommend for a fertilizer that has the best ratios? Thx so much.
