Planting perennials in the fall is something not enough people are doing and the survival rates of plants planted in the fall are so much higher than ones planted in spring. This video will explain the benefits of fall planting and why I prefer planting in the fall over spring.

It's also the best time to plant trees and you can get them on clearance so bonus points for that!

Great tips here! In fall 2017 I hit the big box store garden clearance plants and got 27 shrubs, knock out roses and gallon sized choice perennials for $119. Every one but one of the plants lived. It was so cold when I planted them but we were getting our house ready to sell and I thought we needed some color in the spring. I was very impressed with the way these plants did and in spring they were gorgeous. I am going to hit the garden centers again soon for clearance plants for the new house. I just transplanted some hostas. Coneflowers and penstemons this weekend. Upper 40’s temps are so comfortable to work in. It beats killing myself in the heat of spring! I know its hard to spend time planting things that wont see till the spring but what a lovely surprise when spring comes AND the heavy work is done 😉

I've just watched every one of your videos. I put off growing a garden for decades. I've just decided to start a real garden. I live in Mendocino, and am only a mile from the beach. So I doubt I'll be growing fruit. But I'm excited that I'm finally starting the life I've been waiting for. I'm going to be building the composters right away. Thanks for sharing what you know.

Yep!!!! Just got 4 blueberries and 2 raspberries for 75% off a week ago! The week before that I got a peach tree for 50% off :). Last year I did the same thing and was able to get two apple trees for 50% off. I was so worried bc I’ve never planted any fruit trees, nor have I ever planted so late (we were already at our predicted frost date in Oct). They were also pretty stressed. Then Spring rolled around and they both put on tons of leaves, one flowered, and on noticeable growth! I am now a firm believer in Fall planting!!!

You definitely have me thinking that's for sure! We have an established lime tree in the ground and finally bought ourselves not only a lemon tree but an orange tree as well. Well, being in socal you blink and you'll miss our frost haha but I was going to wait until Feb. to get them in the ground..maybe I should get them in the ground tomorrow 😁 I do worry about our heat (summers get up to the 120's) and the longer the plants have in the ground to become more established really does make sense! Thanks for all the fun tips 👍

Just threw a few currents and gooseberries in this fall. Them and raspberries are about the only thing that grows in zone 4. The only negative about fall planting is that a bunch of the local stores are out of a lot of supplies like mulch, which means a trip to the saw mill may be necessary for wood chips. I also did a trial with 3 plants with mykos and 3 without, just to see if it works. It is a pretty fun hobby to do in between the hunting and fishing that fall brings.

Totally agree! I made the novice mistake of planting a Holly bush in the spring, & the poor thing got fried over our hot summer. Meanwhile I planted some arbor vitae & a mop head cypress mid September wondering if I was too late for them to get established, & they look fabulous! 😛

I agree with you completely Luke! My fall planting success rate with trees is close to 100% whereas in spring its only fifty fifty. Th only catch is that mail order and online nurseries don’t seem to ship fruit trees other than spring time. Anyone have good experience with an online nursery that has a lot of fruit tree varieties and that sells trees in the fall?

What I love to put bulbs under the perennial plants when I plant in the fall. You get early colour from the bulbs and then the perennials grow and hide the foliage f the bulbs. So it's a 2 for 1 situation.

I want to plant everything I can plant right now. I am planting three different Gardens because of the solar minimum I don't know what next year is going to bring. So I'm planting for zone 5, 6, and a garden for pain. I have very very little money. So right now what things are on sale I want to try to get what I can. So I have a question for you.! Just what can be put into the ground now. I did get some bulbs because I want some flowers. But what exactly can be planted now.??

I am in zone 7B. Is this the same case for butterfly bushes? I planted one in mid August and it did not make it. I have a one time replacement warranty on it. In SC, early fall is funky. We could have one week of mild fall/mild early spring weather for a few days and then summer conditions for one to three days. Yo yo weather. When do you advise replacing my butterfly bush?

Hey MIGardener! Is it better to plant smaller plants (perennial/shrub) in the fall? Or should we look for the larger gallon+ sized plants? I just wonder if size plays a role on their success of getting rooted before winter. Thanks! ❤🌱

Why I like planting in the Spring: - If the plant is wounded it can start growing leaves, photosynthesize and heal itself soon enough, while in the Fall it only has energy for surviving the winter and won't heal until next year. - I will know that a plant takes off and survives in 1-2 months since transplanting, whereas if I plant in the Fall I'll know in 4-5 months. - Spring planting gives hard winds less time to tilt your tree because the roots start growing right after you planted it, unlike a Fall transplant that has to wait till Spring. And please learn what rhizosphere means, it's not what migardener says.

Yes, I totally agree. It took me a long time to find a nursery who had a pomegranat tree that I was able to plant in the fall. But it worked, it has been here now for nearly 15 years. Half the plant was taken out with a storm this year but am still hopeful that it will recover with the new shoots. Fall is the best with any fruit trees. Took me a lot of years to figure out the store's sales pitches but have Now got it. Thanks for informing everyone!
