One thing I haven't seen addressed is, what would be the best orientation for a raised bed? Would it be better to have the long axis oriented to the North/South or East/West? Or would it be better to have an off angle?
@chriswebb31794 жыл бұрын
@@praywithmetoday6753 Would orienting them east-west lead to potential shading of plants? It seems like you would avoid that by having the beds run north-south. I don't have a ton of personal experience though so I could be missing something.

Hey guys!! thank you for this!! beginning my garden and need to learn about the cost and affordability of how to build my raised beds. thanks so much for these AWESOME SIMPLE BASIC TEACHING!! I NEED IT!!

I'm really glad you're doing this Basics series! I've tried two years in a row, and believe it or not, the second year was worse than the first, so I've come to realize that my soil is just not good enough to grow in-ground. Since I'm starting from scratch this year and had decided to do raised beds, your tutorials are coming at the perfect time! I had almost decided to do lasagna gardens, with BTE on top, but you've convinced me to reign things in and Keep It Simple until I can at least grow the basics; it's been so frustrating not to get a decent crop of veggies...I just need a "win" this year. I can always lasagna on top next year, and heighten the sides. Thanks Luke!

A good video using basic wood. I've always said that they are too simple to not use untreated wood even if they only last 3 or 4 years. Super simple to attach new wood and the cost is dirt cheap. Thanks for the tutorial and thoughts!

This series is very helpful to those who are just getting started and don't want to or can't plant in-ground. Cool! We don't do beds. We do the deep mulch, no-till method. Free and natural! Maybe you could experiment with this option as another series. There are so many gardening options out there, which is why I love learning about all of them! So interesting. I have a couple of questions being a completely new gardener on a budget. I love this idea, however, in the mountains where I live, my husband and I may have a problem with gofers. My first question is, therefore, are there any inexpensive ways of adding a base to these plant beds with good drainage. I was thinking either wire mesh or a thin grade of wood with holes drilled in. 2nd question: What is the most affordable soil that you fill these beds with that will still work well? I have to plan whether I can afford to fill these beds once made. Thankyou a lot, both of you for making this video.

I just made an order from the website, super excited, can't wait! Just a quick question, I was interested in your worm casting but as I am a container gardener on a balcony I was worried about getting worms in my pots, question is would cooking the worm casting destroy the nutrients or just kill the worm eggs? (any worms found before the oven will be peacefully put outside in dirt) Many thanks and I look forward to your thoughts!
@chrisdahl8647 жыл бұрын
Why are you concerned about getting worms in your containers? They are one of the better things you could add to your containers! You do not want/need to heat any castings you buy, heating them serves no purpose.
@ShawnStrickland7 жыл бұрын
I am concerned because I don't want dead worms in my pots... dead worms decaying in my containers wouldn't be very good. Heating the castings would kill the worms eggs... so I only have the worm poop..

I would assume if you use the same compost for your garden, then you can use it as your soil medium. It all depends on the quality of the compost.
What size bed would you recommend for children? They surely don't need that big!

a 4' x 4' bed is perfect for a kid to get started. Allows them to access all sides and it is just ideal for them to plant anything they want in it.

I always ask myself this question how long untreated wood will last in raised beds before rottenig thanks for the tips.
@Vector_Ze7 жыл бұрын
I'm sure that depends on your climate. Hot or Cold but Dry will last many times as long as Hot & Wet. But, since we're talking about gardening here, moisture is going to be a factor regardless of your climate. I live in Florida and untreated lumber here would likely need replacing in 3-4 years. Here, I'd also be concerned about untreated lumber in ground contact becoming a feast for termites pretty quickly.

Hey! I live in Arkansas, I’m wanting to do a raised bed garden in my back yard, (first time gardener) but I have very rocky soil. Would you recommend me to stack my bed so it’s 2ft deep? Also is there an inexpensive option for getting soil to fill?
@dojoparsnip99054 жыл бұрын
Free option from what i have read is: if you see a new dig site around a house or a new plot, you could ask someone at the site about the dirt if you could have some. More likely is that they have to pay to dump it. So dumping it at your place for free is cost saving to them. or if you have a truck they can load some off for you.

Wouldn't the soil be pushing on the boards no matter which one is on the outside? I think you lose the same amount of space no matter which one is outside.
@dojoparsnip99054 жыл бұрын
the boards in actual measure are 1.5" x 9.25" x 12'. the way they put it together in the video loses 3" on the short side and is 45ft². if it was the other way it would be 47ft². 4ft minus 3 inches (1.5" x 2) equals 3 ft 9 in or 3.75 ft. if the other way 12 ft mins 3 inches equals 11 ft 9 in or 11.75 ft. 3.75 x 12 = 45. 4 x 11.75 = 47.

So a few comments. I agree on the amount of pressure exerted on the shorter board will cause more failures and spreading the pressure on the screw joint over the longer portion will alleviate this. An easier way to fix this would be to add a small corner block and drill into it. Its a small detail, but adds so much to the bed and takes up an insignificant amount of space.
@courtneyfarber32477 жыл бұрын
honestly those corners will be fine the problem is the 12ft long boards will bow in the middle once the rain comes and the dirt settles unless he uses a light weight potting soil cuz I did 4x10 beds out of the same wood and mine were 2foot shorter and they still bowed so I had to hammer 2x2 stakes in the ground right in the middle of my 2x10s inside the box and screwed them to the 2x10s to stop the bowing I commented in a previous vid to help him out b4 the same thing happens to him but it doesn't appear he cares if they bow so this is for every else! so u don't make the same mistake I did!
