Migraine Aura / Ocular Migraines what I experience, the Triggers I suspect. Are these things caused by foods and environmental factors?

I was freaked out, too, the first time I experienced one. I've had them about the past 20 yrs. Triggers I've identified are: raising my head backwards fast, going from a relatively dark room to Bright light, just looking up towards a bright light, being in a stressful situation.

That's exactly right! Interesting that it follows nearly the same pattern in everyone. I also get the blind spot in the center. Then come the fireworks.

I have had these ocular migraines with migraine headaches for over 30 years. I am now 49. My migraines always start with aura, always. Then, the headaches follow. It's very scary, I feel you because they come out of nowhere and you become blind for about 30-60 minutes. You could be driving, working, or doing something important and when this hits you, you become completely disabled. That is why it causes anxiety, at least for me. I have to be careful with my diet, need to stay hydrated and sleep well to reduce the frequency of the episodes. I could go several months with having one or I can have an episode biweekly. It all depends on what I eat, how clean I eat, how much hydrated I am and how much sleep I get. You are not alone! Migraine auras suck! They are scary and trigger anxiety big time!

I think you’re correct about sleep and hydration. I had one today and had a lot of Chinese food last night.. maybe it was MSG ? 🤔 I was also outside in the sun, I live in California and it was very warm today, probably contributed to dehydration.. How are you doing? Everything been going good?

Spot on explanation, Ive had them for years and never found out what triggers them. Ive tried leaving out coffee, spicy food and other stuff but to no avail. Mine last for around 40 minutes and start off with the small blind spot in the focus

I can remember first having one at about 10 years old and I am now 70 years old.I still experience them from time to time. Usually 2 or 3 times a year. Never had any side effects except a very slight headache sometimes. For me it lasts about 20-30 min. When it happens it starts out small and gradually gets bigger and slowly exits off to the left or right. I have found that the best thing to do is relax, maybe lie down and let it pass.

I’m 83 and have had aura migraines since I was 50! Why they suddenly started I’ve no idea. The first time, I knew straight away what it was because my late husband had had them since he was about 8yrs old! As I’ve got older they have become more intense and last much longer. I’m much more sensitive to bright light too. Fortunately I seldom get a really painful headache with it, but just as you describe in the video, more of a dull ache. I’ve never managed to pinpoint any triggers and have even woken up in the morning with one sometimes and on the odd occasion even during the night! I am an anxious person but funnily enough just take these as they come, knowing they will pass. However- I hate having them , they are so horrible and often happen at the most inconvenient times when I’m in the middle of doing stuff or going out etc. and for a while I can’t see a thing ! They also seem to come in clusters, with several months in between and then several over a few days. I found the video really interesting and very helpful to read everyone’s comments. bless you

Eileen Thompson ABSOLUTELY!!! I have been completely asleep, and halfway wake up to the zigzag doing its little dance, and I just try to fall back asleep so I can sleep through the dreaded headache after the fact!! Baffling!! Since I’ve had them for so long now, I assume that it’s not a brain tumor since I’d probably be dead by now considering how long I’ve had them. Perhaps that’s my solace?? I ALWAYS try to find some sort of silver lining even in the most obnoxious of situations. Best wishes!! Also, I’m sorry for the loss of your late husband!! Sending you hugs 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

i think it's great that you talk about the anxiety that comes, afterwards you worry as to when the next one will come, I start counting days, weeks then months then lose track of the count until one day, bright sunlight, computer light or light off the sea and zap! it starts up again, rest and relax afterwards but the anxiety is the worst bit. It's intriguing that most people can time them, and that they usually last between 20 and 30 mins, 22 minutes for me and also there doesn't seem to much information as to cause. Sharing is caring ..

They always start with visual disturbance, and i actually loose vision in my right eye and as you have mentioned this will last around 30 minutes. Twice i have had a feeling of something creeping under my skin, and have lost the ability to speak. Once over, everything is back to normal until the next time, and i absolutely agree each time my migraine occures it really scares me.x

At the beginning, when you don’t know, it can be very frightening, but when I realized there’s no much I could do, I decided to “enjoy them”, As I don’t feel pain, when the auras come, I rest and try to see all the patterns and colors, they are beautiful in fact! And when it’s over, I draw the patterns with the colors... Differents every time.... It’s my way to live with it.... I hope you are well...

Interestingly I had a migraine headache with aura when I was about 13years old (my family has a history of migraines). It started with a spot of fuzzyness and ended with the whole room going white and me throwing up. I'm now 50 and I hadn't had that again, but in my late 40s I started getting auras but without a headache. I think my trigger is to do with lack of sleep (as I have a small child).

Hey Mike, I've dealt with this aura migrane for almost 10 years. When I visited a neurologist for treatment I was prescribed with Rizact-10. So basically if you take it immediately after you see the zigzag pattern it will prevent the headache which happens just half n hour after the pattern appears. I guess my triggers are dark coffee and dark chocolate. Your video was really informative. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Hey sorry I'm just seeing this now but I get the exact same thing, 2 times a month at least, sometimes less. I do get anxiety but have learned to manage it through meditation and centering myself when I feel anxiety coming on. I use calming smells since that is directly related to emotions. Sometimes it's my favorite candle, essential oil or even sage. I remind myself its going to go away and that things could be worse. Lots of self talk. Thanks for sharing this for all of us!

Pretty disturbing, but after having the auras without headaches for decades, I've learned to accept the 20 minutes of visuals just as you describe them. Try keeping track of the times they occur. I've plotted the times over years and see that the majority of them occur between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. More interesting is that the number of occurrences peaks in the spring significantly, sometimes twice a week in March/ April which I think is related to the pollen in the air! Don't know if you have very rarely experienced "brain fog" or facial numbness, but talk about disturbing! Unfortunately, my daughter goes through the same thing, but a terrible headache follows. My sister has them, my father did and now my daughter has them which means it is probably a genetic thing. My doctor acknowledges them without much excitement since they are somewhat common. I only wish we knew exactly the cause and I keep hoping a medicine is found that will stop them! I've tried Butterbur and Magnesium daily and I think they have reduced the numbers, but haven't stopped them.

William Harrigill Interesting on the peak months.. I will need to go back to my personal log to see correlations. Hi from Manchester Uk. Great video and description. I have had 2 of these exactly as you describe in the last 2 days. Previous ones spaced out around 3 to 6 months but yes they are worrying. The most worrying thing for me is the feeling that I have brought it on by just thinking about it. Did the initial flash appear and then I thought about it, or the other way round? If the latter then that is terrifying for me as I am constantly looking out for it and trying not to bring one on 😞 I think that stress is perhaps the most possible trigger although we all look for a more concrete solution such as diet, environment etc. as this is the most easily able to be dealt with. No one sympathises and treats you like some kind of neurotic freak, but seeing your video and realising I'm not alone and perhaps it's not serious is a great source of comfort. Thanks again and I suppose the best solution is to just relax through it and try to enjoy the show realising that it's not a pre-cursor to something more serious.

I got one of those ocular migraines last night while driving. This is the second one in my life the previous one was over 10 years ago. This one was pretty scary because I saw the jagged lines at the edges of my eyes and I saw flashing colors too, the previous one I am pretty sure it was just jagged edges. Both times I was looking at a bright screen or lights I think that does it for me but who knows. I looked at my phone screen while driving and that bright white light triggered it. Now I have like anxiety over this can't stop watching videos about it. Oh I did not get a headache in either case just the vision thing.

FIRST, THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video and FINALLY someone describing what I’ve not ever really been able to. How do you describe an iridescent, dancing, zig-zag, thingy that moves across your line of sight without sounding like a crazy person?!?!? ESPECIALLY to someone who has ZERO clue what the heck I’m talking about or trying to describe?!?! So TRULY...THANK YOU!!! I used to get these semi regularly, and up until this past 1.5 months, I couldn’t tell you the last time I had to deal with one. Today, I woke up, sat up in my bed, and BAM...there was the “flash” that alerted me to the fact that I needed to prepare myself for yet another one. My point being, since we are all trying to decipher triggers here...all I did was wake up!!! I hadn’t gotten out of bed yet, I had not yet consumed anything orally, NOTHING!!! I woke up!!! And if waking up is my trigger, what type of life does that give me to live? I have been experiencing WAY more stress than usual as my 5 year relationship just ended and the prick is ghosting myself and my daughter, so perhaps, waking up IS MY trigger because of course the first thing I feel and think about is the loss and overwhelming feeling of his absence. The whole reason I’m reaching out is mostly just to say thank you in helping me realize I’m NOT alone, and now I have a video to share with my Doctor for her to watch since I’ve not ever been able to describe what I experience. I am unfortunately however, one of those individuals who suffer that excruciating headache after the fact. Good times 😭💔 And this exact moment with everyone in the world freaking out about Coronavirus, I think I’ll hold off on going in to my doctors office for the time being since I’ve been dealing, living with, and tolerating these annoying things for decades, and just hold off momentarily. NONE of that changes my deepest gratitude to YOU for posting this video!! I doubt that you’ll ever even get this message, but I at least know I expressed my gratitude to you, and EVERYONE else who have also posted their stories on this thread!! It means so much to learn I’m not alone!!! Take care to each one of y’all, and be safe!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

I MIGHT go visit my dr SOON though because I KNOW my “thyroid” (non-existent...cancer...removed it) is WAY out of WHACK as my sudden hair loss is UNACCEPTABLE, exhausted, plus these ridiculous visual migraines as the cherry on top!!! I KNOW I’m stressed and MAYBE that’s the culprit, but I won’t know that till I get bloodwork done. I don’t believe that will explain the visual migraines though, but perhaps 🤷🏻‍♀️My astrological sign is a cancer, so I innately stress about everything and nothing!?!?! I get aura as part of a whole s storm of symptoms, but for me my three triggers are the anticipation of looking forward to something, some spicy smells, tiredness and the release of stress like coming home on a Friday night from work. For me they are the signal to much worse symptoms on the way like numb hands and face, the headache like the worst hangover doubled, dizziness, vomiting and pretty much wreck me for 48 hours. I take triptans once the aura starts, sometimes it stops the rest of the symptoms, sometimes not, and every now and then the whole process restarts again the next day for no apparent reason. As far as I know there's nothing that stops the aura. You can replicate the aura temporarily by closing your eyes and pushing on them for a while. It's basically when no signal is reaching your visual cortex so your brain fills it in with garbage. With aura there's some kind of electrical surge moving across the brain slowly that we don't fully understand yet. For you it goes just across your visual cortex, but for me and others it moves on to other parts of the brain too. Interestingly enough I've seen them as I've been dreaming and wake up immediately and it's still there, so pretty interesting to know that dreams come from the same area of the brain that creates our vision. Also the visual cortex is on the back of the brain, not actually where your eyes are, so the pain you have on the back of your head is completely consistent with that.

I've noticed a correlation with soy products...which is in most everything processed...I think the way soy breaks down in your body contributes to the excitation in your brain (glutamate response, like msg). I've tried to cut out soy, msg, maltodetrin, etc and added B complex vitamins and magnesium oxide which have drastically helped and cut my auras down. I was sometimes having multiples per day, several times per week, and the supplements have practically eliminated them.

I don't know whether you monitor the comments on here, but I had aura or ocular (also sometimes called optical) migraine for the last 20 years, progressively worsening as I got older, till I was having at least one every day, sometimes two or three. I would notice that I'd be photosensitive afterwards, and that light at a certain angle might seem to trigger an attack, specially glinting light, maybe where the sun reflects on metal. Two years ago, I gave up dairy for another reason - and the aura migraine stopped and the photosensitivity went. I ate a cheese sandwich twice, 3 days apart after a year to see what would happen - aura migraine is what happened. so the main trigger for me was dairy, with cheese being the biggest offender. I had one four weeks ago though - I'd taken a new antibiotic, and one of the possible side effects was visual disturbance, so I assume it was that. Not had one since...

So I'm new in this!! about 3 weeks ago my first aura in zigzag exactly as you describe it without pain. Dreadful the first times. Now I see a lot of people have them. I blamed the use of cell phones, the stress I don't know.

Norma Cirigliano I’ve had them while staring at screens, computer and cell... however, have had them in the absence.. could be the EMF’s though.. you know, our brains and bodies are electrical.. with all the signals we are exposed to, I’m sure they somehow interact with our brains..

I have the ocular migraine that's the best description I can come up with as far as what's on the internet but had an MRI they found out I had a mini stroke I didn't even I know I had stroke till the MRI and it left a scar in my brain and they also found a cyst 1.5 in diameter was 1.0 in 2011 but it looks like it grows and its located behind my throat on the right side and we still try to figure it out with my doctor if that could have anything to do with it but I have this ocular migraine fir about 12 to 15 years ago I think but i can't pinpoint when it started

My triggers are poor sleep, excessive alcohol, bright lights. If I take a low dose aspirin everyday I don't get them. When I discontinue aspirin within a week or two I get one. FWIW.

My aura is exactly like yours, where it starts really small then gradually gets bigger until it takes up my entire field of view then fades away. I have a question to you, and anyone who reads this. Has anyone ever been able to make the aura go away while experiencing it? Or reduce the time of the aura?

Keanudabeast I’m wondering that myself. I’ve never been able to stop them or cut them off during an episode. Typically they are 28-30 minutes for me, like clockwork..

Hey, There's a medication known as Rizact-10. I've been using it. It prevents the worst headache that follows after the pattern.

Not got rid of the flashing, but decided last time to actively watch it. My zigzags are largely pretty colours and to ‘watch’ it is quite comforting. Yesterday I got up too soon and the zigzags recurred, have to give yourself time after they stop. No idea what the trigger was, but I’m On antibiotics right now for a fairly serious infection.

I got my first one at 28, about 5 years ago…they come in clusters. My question is why did I never have them when i was younger? couple things i noticed..I get way more in the warm months. I can only recall very few in the winter. I didn't have any from September of '17 year until May '18. From May until now (sep) I've had at least a dozen, often in back to back days. The caffeine actually helped mine go away quicker the one time I happened to be drinking it while having one. Another possible trigger is when I fast and don't eat so I think low blood sugar has something to do with it.

Tre Norman hey Tre, sorry you get these man.. I had another one today.. I worked out hard today and was out in the sun with my soccer team ( I coach), thinking I may have been a bit dehydrated?? I had my first one at about 31 or so... also thinking weather changes may be a trigger... it sucks man....

I had my first today- I was cleaning my house and sweating, pretty sure I’m dehydrated too. These are definitely factors.

Had my first one yesterday, just after a run on a warm day. I think mine only lasted a couple of minutes, but since it was the first I was really worried. But the triggers match yours. Could easily be dehydration and/or low blood sugar.

Mine I grey, and it slowly grows to cover almost the entire vision of my right eye. It only lasts for about a minute or two, then it slowly fades away. I've had this since I was 23 or so, I'm now 30. I get them maybe about once a month. I'm not sure if this is an ocular migraine or what. It's scary.
