Of course the crisis of which I speak happened all the way back in the 13th century. And king Béla IV faced a decision that would change history forever. Should he let the Cumans in? The pressures from the invading Mongols was obvious, especially after the return of his bold emmissary Friar Julian aka Julianus Barat who had set out in the late 1230's on a mission to find the ancient ancestors of the Magyars. And guess what, he found them. Somewhere around the Uralic mountains there existed a relic of a tribe that allegedly spoke a language that was mutually intelligible with 13th century Magyarul. What great news this would be for Béla who was desperate to solidify the mythical legitimacy of his lage Árpád era regime. A young king with a point to prove.
.
Unfortunately Julian also came bearing some horrifying news. The Mongols had their eyes on Europe. Just as the formerly paganistic Magyars had come from the Eastern steppe lands some 3 and half centuries earlier, and just as the Huns had come some 4 centuries before that, the Mongols were now intent to follow the grassland superhighway into the heart of feudal europe. This was terrible news for all who stood in their path.
.
But what would Béla do? Would he let the Cumans, another paganistic horsetribe, who had previously clashed with the Magyars, into the homeland? Find out in this all new episode of my hungarian history youtube series.
.
We go over the major plot points leading up to the tatarjaras in this vidoe while frollicking through the incredibly spontaneous blizzard that dumped about a foot of snow in the hills behind my house here in Leányfalu.
