Shouldn't be THAT surprising, considering their background -- they should be able to get out of a tight spot without needing their boss tell them how to do it. Other shows like Leverage have done that too, both to cover for the absence of "the boss", but also to quickly adapt to things not going 100% according to script.

@davidmellish3295 Um, yes, perhaps. The fifth season, which I don't remember much of, did get a bit awkward. It was darker, more intense, than the earlier seasons. All I remember of Vaughn is in one episode, Hannibal and the team are in Vaughn's office, and Vaughn presses a switch underneath his table and a bulletproof glass barrier comes quickly down between him and the A Team, and some gas is released on the A Team's side of Vaughn's office and they pass out. I remember thinking to myself, aged 14, that I'd like one day to have an office like that. Another thing I remember is Gen Fulbright (Jack Ging from _Riptide,_ I think?) gets shot while trying to board a chopper and his Asian daughter bawls like a baby when he croaks. And the third thing I recall is, Murdock asks Hannibal about Vietnam, _"Colonel, do you think about it?"_ Hannibal simply answers, _"I remember it. I don't think about it."_ Presumably, he meant flashbacks. Intense stuff.
