Migrants
Directed by Hugo Caby, Antoine Dupriez, Aubin Kubiak, Lucas Lermytte, Zoé Devise
/ migrants_p3d
"A stellar student film from 5 young creatives out of the Pôle 3D school in France, Migrants is an emotionally affecting fable that dramatizes contemporary concerns surrounding climate change and refugees while wowing audiences with astounding animation designed to transpose the visual charm of handcrafted stop-motion onto a full 3D production. While its allegorical themes are seamlessly integrated into its storytelling, and its visual look has drawn acclaim from some of the most prestigious media arts organizations in the world, the film’s near-universal acclaim is due, in equal measure, to its ability to transcend its activist message and calling-card worthy technical execution and simply tell a concise, effective, and ultimately heart-rending story that will resonate with many kinds of viewers from all walks of life.
The student team of Hugo Caby, Antoine Dupriez, Aubin Kubiak, Lucas Lermytte, and Zoé Devise approached their graduation project knowing they wanted to create a film that addressed societal issues. Inspired initially by the story of the Aquarius, a watercraft filled with refugees that stirred global headlines when it was refused entry at Italian ports in 2018, they used that as a jumping-off point in shaping Migrants. The plot that they arrived upon centers on two polar bears who are cast adrift in the Arctic due to the ecological unraveling of their home. Following the current, they find deliverance when they wash ashore upon a verdant wooded forest. However, the pair soon encounter brown bears native to the area and their initial hopes of cohabitation are quickly dashed.
At 8min long, the film is not a sophisticated treatment on the issues it evokes, but it avoids preachiness via its unerring focus on the travails of its adorable protagonists, pushing the metaphors to the background and crafting a complete and heartbreaking narrative that will appeal to fans of tear-jerker animated shorts like Lost & Found. This understated approach proves effective for its politics, as it sneakily utilizes our vast well of empathy for cute, plushy animals to advocate for the real-life humans we somehow find easier to ignore. When the creative team finally chooses to bridge the connection and make its previously implicit message explicit in the film’s closing moments, the result is quietly devastating.
It's hard to deny the
The film’s technical excellence and social issue themes are sometimes difficult to appreciate in the face of sheer empathy-inducing adorableness.
Migrants is the latest in a surprising mini-trend of flashy student animations that self-consciously address environmental issues. It now sits alongside Pascal Schelbli’s The Beauty, Hybrids, from students out of MoPA, and Gobelins’ Thermostat 6, among several others, as high-profile award-season contenders that have parlayed environmentalist sentiment into widespread acclaim at both festivals and online. The formula is clear-use viewer appetite for well-designed eye-candy to smuggle in weightier issues. Yet, Migrants is, to my eyes, the best of the bunch, as its didacticism, while obvious, is still forced to take a backseat to genuinely compelling drama. We care about these polar bears! And the stakes they face make the film that much more appealing to varied audiences beyond animation enthusiasts.

Oh you mean the food we all eat to feed the masses with all the artificial sweeteners and additives to stretch the rations to feed the world population? Oh ima it and warm too. But the food will affect us all the same way wether its store brand or organic. Nothing goes untampered with anymore. We can all fight back as 1 big mass if we really tried but then they'd just nuke us all and they'll go under the mountains just like they talk about in the earthquake movies where the can sustain X amount of people for X number of years. I wasn't even going to respond but honest regardless of what the truth is or what we do they already have an answer for everything and there's nothing we can do so I'm just going to keep living day to day and when my time has come god will take me home. Sorry, I just wanted a nice animated movie to fall asleep to and instead I found a movie about polar bears which are in fact endangered and they lost their home by accident, not by choice and controlled by a higher power. I was affected by it. You dont have to like it but I speak the truth. We cant change things, why not just keep pretending and try to be happy in stead of making all kinds of movies and clips and things dwelling on the things we cant accomplish. It doesn't make sense.

Where'd you get the hope from in that image? The mother bear lies motionless and alone beside some parts of the wreckage of their raft on the beach, her child nowhere to be seen. The people going by take no notice, someone just picks her up in passing and takes her away. In terms of the story the ending is pretty clear... They're all dead. Drowned at sea, killed by the teddy bear police.

Other comments have already stated many of the reasons why i, too, loved this film. 🙂 However, since an important aspect of both treating other people well and protecting the environment is *understanding* rather than prejudice and projection, and since i also like bears, i should like to point out that preparatory research on bear behavior was not particularly well done here. A few examples: 1:03 I have never seen videos or images of bear cubs hiding or sheltering under their mothers. They almost always hide behind their mother instead. 1:20 When bears "taste the air" (check for smells), they do that standing on four legs (not lying down). They lift their head more markedly than shown in the film, and not once, but several times, a process that can take several seconds. They open their mouth more clearly and slightly wider than shown in the film, such that the teeth are clearly visible. That's relevant to know in order to correctly interpret bear behaviour in the wild. 1:54 I don't remember ever seeing videos or images of bears licking cubs. Maybe you confused that with the behaviour of cats. While bear mothers strongly love and protect their cubs, that's not very apparent when you see them, as long as they are undisturbed. Important to know in order to not misinterpret seemingly unconcerned, even seemingly callous behaviour of a mother bear as "unattentive" or "disinterested". She will take action when needed, but no sooner than that. 2:06 I don't remember ever seeing a bear shove a cub with their nose, and i doubt they would, because their nose is a very delicate organ and they are strongly afraid of damaging it. What is shown here looks more like dog behaviour to me than like what a bear might do. A bear will usually instruct cubs what to do by vocalizing (more specifically, grunting). If the cub disobeys and gets into the way, it may get shoved aside by being hit with a front paw, which can look shockingly violent but isn't really that serious, it's merely telling the cub "damn it, behave yourself". 2:07 Even being shoved aside, a cub will not be as surprised and will be back on its feet and moving again more quickly. 2:09 A bear mother does not pick up a cub by grabbing the fur in its neck with the mouth. Again, that looks like cat behaviour to me. 3:01 A bear absolutely does not lower its nose down to the ground when searching for scents. Nose up high in the air, jaws slightly open, repeated nodding movements, instead. Again, what is shown here looks like a dog to me. 3:46 In this situation of being directly attacked, the cub would definitely not go under, but instead behind the mother. 5:02 I think a bear cub would rarely stray away so far from the mother that the mother has to search for it. In general, cubs do not stray beyond grunting distance. If, on the other hand, the mother tells them to remain in a specific place, even if the mother needs to go somewhere else for a short time, they stay put and usually do not move away. They are no doubt inquisitive, but not quite as reckless as human children. The behaviour shown here looks looks like human childishness to me and quite un-bearish. Also, even if this did happen, the mother would not be nearly as upset and simply grunt to call the cub back rather than panic as in the film. The behaviour of the adult bear in this scene looks human, too, rather than bear-like. 5:39 When threatened, cubs don't just lay down and play dead. Then usually run away (straight back to their mother - that's why you must absolutely *never* follow a bear cub if you ever see one) or if that is impossible, even a bear cub will fight back, and even a cub can be ferocious when seriously cornered. 6:02 You will absolutely never see a bear stampede. Bears never form herds. That is buffalo behaviour (also seen in many other species, of course, but definitely not in bears). 6:28 I don't recall ever having seen footage of a bear mother carrying her cub. She will certainly encourage the cub to run when needed, but not carry it. If the cub is unable to walk, it will be left behind. I realize that, if you had used real bear behaviour, most people would not understand because, while bear body language is not actually hard to understand, it is very poorly known by the general public. If people don't know what to look for, in most situations bears will just look bored and distinterested because bear body language is easy to overlook for humans who never heard about it. Than again, anthropomorphizing the already heavily anthropomorphized and often misunderstood bears even more, as you did it, does not seem ideal either, reinforcing clichés and misunderstandings. So i feel a bit torn. Such a film no doubt causes a lot of work. Why not also read up a bit on bear behaviour and at least show those aspects correctly that can be depicted without getting misinterpreted or overlooked, like showing correct "tasting" and hiding behaviour? Oh well, _tant pis_ , i love the film anyway... 🐻

Such a gorgeous animation- I kept admitting the textures and how the animation flowed but was just gutted by the entire story. It sucks how cruel and cold hearted people are to those who are in need of a helping hand. There’s enough to go around, there’s enough recourses, enough space… and yet they only see that they are different then them and so they outcast, abuse and turn away their own kind who are only looking for a safe place.

It's not that Humans don't care it's just that there's not much we can do right now. Fossil Fuels can't just be banned and even most people who advocate for change are connected to fossil fuels in some way.

The animation is beautiful. felt like a grandmother is weaving up a story for their grandkids. . . It broke my heart when the mother and child were abandoned again from their right of having a peaceful/comfortable life cause they just didn't fit in like the rest.

At first I was enjoying the technical aspect of it -- such great stop motion, music, direction, and production design...but then I forget it's animation and I'm pulled deep into this world and this story. It's a story that happens to real migrants facing real struggles every day. This is amazing work and I hope that it moves people to do the right thing, be it helping fellow humans or taking action to fight climate change.

This never happened to migrant today and I'm a migrant myself.... First the migrant knows they are not allowed to come and have to ilegaly enter ( or they chose the legal way)... two those bears had no economical reasons to come... If you things today immigration is about Climat you have been wrongly informed/manipulated. Also, when you respect the culture and way of living in the country you go to, SURPRISINGLY you are very welcomed... I like the animation work but this ideology put your brain to sleep.... it's dangerous.

@@BertrandBarraud I don't think filmmakers wanted to say that immigration IS about climate. It's just a metaphor. Of course economical reasons are determinating. BUT there are good reasons to think it would change in the future.

@@BertrandBarraud You don’t speak for all migrants my dude. Even if you’re the most patriotic, upstanding citizen in whatever country you were able to immigrate to- there are always people who will despise you for not being from there. I was lucky enough to have been born here after my parents sacrificed Everything to get me to be here. And every Damn day I am reminded that even though I was born and raised here, I am not fully welcomed. There are just evil people like that everywhere, some more cruel towards migrants and would even kill them to have them out of their precious country.

Each one of us who has been so touched by this brilliant film, can add his/her voice. Together we stand, and there are lots of kind hearts out there, so let's bring love, tolerance and kindness where it belongs: in our world. Blessings to all of you and all life on earth!

The land preservations where I live are being destroyed by homeless people. They have nowhere else to go besides a muddy tent in the grass, or a greasy one under the bridges where everyone drives to work. It breaks my heart. The animals nearby are dying. They can't survive the industrial chemicals being leached into our flood plan and the noise/light pollution leaching from our ever growing city into the forest. Our river used to be a thriving natural habitat but now it's dying and almost all the animals are gone. My favorite part of this short is at the end when someone finds the little bear and picks him up. Maybe there is hope, if we can remember how to care.
