Modern Day Mountain Man

Modern Day Mountain Man

Жыл бұрын

Barren ground caribou hunting in Alaska with Billy Molls.
From the Modern Day Mountain Man film series:
It's said life is a collection of experiences and intersections with people. The adversities, failures, conquests, and the people we experience them with are the fabric of our memories, and the very underpinning of the person we become.
Every year sportsmen from around the world migrate to the Alaskan wilderness. Why? What are they seeking? Once there, what do they find?
For many, the testing of one's endurance while pursuing a trophy Dall ram, or glassing herds of caribou in search of a white-haired bull with heavy, sweeping antlers lures them to the Last Frontier. For others, it's a magazine image they saw as a child of a giant bull moose with a dinner table-sized rack standing in a still, mirror pond with regal, snowcapped mountains towering above in the distance. Some hunters long for a measure of danger; their desire is to experience bear country, and discover how they will react in it.
As a boy, Billy Molls dreamed of living the life of a mountain man. Three decades later, if only for a few months each year, he does just that. This documentary offers candid insight into his journey, his time-honored perspective of conservation, the refinement of his worldview, and the experiences he shares with six hunters from various walks of life. Join Billy and his clients on four unforgettable Alaskan hunting adventures.

Almost fifty years ago my opportunity to come hunt Alaskan moose lay before me . Twenty years old and I had a yearning to go All things set and I chose a path not in God's will for me and almost as fast as my dream to hunt in Alaska was right in front of me , it vanished never to present it self again .I have watched all your videos and they have given me inspiration and joy . Each time I live my yearning for adventure through you . I thank you from the bottom of my heart . I give thanks to my Lord and savior Jesus Christ for my life and family and putting you in my life . After watching your wonderful videos I sit back and memories of past hunts flood my mind. I've been blessed to have been on many great hunts from groundhogs to Bison and most in between. At 66 I still get out to hunt, was out after whitetail deer yesterday, but I can't push it like I once had done. Still I love to get out in the woods with a rifle in my hands and gather more memories. When it's all said and done, memories are the stuff of which our lives are made. Thanks Billy.

Billy I really enjoy your videos they remind me of my Flying Days in Bristol Bay. One flight I remember most between Lake Clark and Kulik Lake in the mid 90’s the Mulchatna Caribou herd was move toward jack Rabbit hills. For almost 35 miles below my flight path and at least 4 miles wide all I could se was Caribou moving like ants it was amazing like something from a African movie.

I hope you do some work on yourself, it sounds to me as if you need to. Be well fellow human, and treat others how you like to be treated. Haven’t you learned anything from Billy’s videos? it was late fall of 1991, my pa took me out during the first snow fall on the western side of the Brooks Range, this was about 4 miles from our camp. we had heard the herd was moving thru below the mountain side just below the treelines. we found a spot in some brush and a small island of trees. the snowflakes were huge and thick, making it somewhat silent as the snow muffled the elements of noise. we waited for about a good half hour. suddenly we began hearing the grunts and snorts of the tuttu protruding thru the thicket. my pa hands me a 218 Bee lever rifle and whispers to me, "go ahead and pick one" as he counted down to fire, 3, 2, 1. we had to stand up to let the tuttu know where we were because there was so many. as we went to retrieve our catch, we looked towards the west along the coastline, far as your eye can see was the herd of caribou. 30 years later, I'm now 35, I haven't seen that unknown number ever again. I'm glad you fellas had a good hunt. stay safe wherever you be. cheers 🙏👊

The method Aussies and Kiwis use of not using their safety catches and instead using a half open bolt; hails back from the deer culling days in NZ. It started because the rifles in those days were typically, Older Sakos, Parker Hales, Brnos, BSA's and other rifles using Mauser 98 type actions. Those guns mentioned all had positive half open bolt states and you could walk around with them all day like that without the bolt opening. In NZ the bush is dense and a hunter will walk all day with a round up the spout and the bolt on half cock. You can't load once you see a deer. It's too late in that situation. Unfortunately most of those guns today are gone and the most popular rifles in NZ and Aus are the T3 Tikka's and Remington 700s and Howa's. Unfortunately they all have crap half cock actions and it's easy to knock them open and lose a round. These days we are better off adopting the US method of using the safety catch.
