Dr.Lev Gurevich, my late husband, was Isaac's violin teacher until his sudden passing one year before this video was posted. My husband was a master violin pedagogue from the former USSR. He taught Isaac well, and Isaac enjoyed studying with him very much.

I would very much like to see Miguel Negri playing the entire piece of The Bee. This video was like a teaser. How amazing must Miguel's performance be!

Do you press hard with the fingertips or pads when you do the fast vibrato? Everyone says the left hand fingers should have minimum pressure possible when on the fingerboard but when I see you do it it looks really strong and a lot of pressure.

That's a very good question. the needed degree of muscle development, pressure, etc. can be very misleading...I feel that in violin playing it has to do with tension/relaxation. One of the teachers I had was a fan of total relaxation. Obviously, relaxation is important, but if I am honest with you, if I was totally relax right now I would fall of the chair... so 100% relaxation with no muscles development is not the way.... Now, effort, tension, etc, is even less "the way". Regarding finger pressure for vibrato it depends. There are 2 concepts. First you need to use the same finger pressure you would use for a right hand pizzicato. The finger needs to be stable, otherwise overtones will be missing. Second concept envolvs passages. If you cannot vibrate each not of a fast passage , the passage will have not stability. I feel the most important thing for vibrato is to free the first finger joint. If you press too much you will block it.... if you press too little the fingers goes out of the note. I hope it helps. Best wishes! Miguel
