日本人が歌詞を重視するのは、万葉の時代（奈良時代　西暦710〜）から続く文化です。 古い時代、唄は詠んで情景を思い浮かべ、意味を味わうものでした。音を楽しむ為の口で奏でる音楽は別にあったようです。 そういった文化は主に仏教を通して庶民にも広まりました。高貴な人が奉納（神に捧げる事）した和歌に節を付けて歌いながら巡礼したようです。これら文化の影響が時代を経て今に至ります。 庶民は文字通り歌いながら仕事をしましたし、伝統的な仏教にも音に乗せた歌（讃と呼ばれる讃美歌）は古くからあります。 その多くは忘れ去られて消えようとしています。消えてしまったものもある。かろうじて子守唄などが残されています。
