Mikaela Shiffrin suffer a big Downhill crash at Cortina d'Ampezzo! She had just come off a small jump right before the giant Tofanaschuss, but slid on landing and was unable to regain the skiing line before careening into the netting.

I watched this on the FIS youtube this morning and was aprehensive hearing there was only one practice run in order to save the course. It is a fast downhill with lots of blind, high speed, rolling turns. The commentator expressed this race will probably be investigated with all the DNF's All the best Mikaela, we are going to miss you

One training run, and well off pace at that. It is one of the more challenging DH’s on the Women’s circuit. She even said the day before that she hoped to do better on race day because it had been some time since she was on the DH Skiis.. Probably an ill advised decision to start but what do any of us know what pressures they are facing to push out of the gate. Prep for 2026, GOAT bla bla, Team, Sponsors, and she is genuinely confident. The reality is this happens in ski racing. And for those that say poor skiing and and wrong, line, you probably never pushed out of a start house in your life. More than one of the best crashed out today.

This hard and icy crap is not easy to ski and it takes alot to not crash, especially at their speeds. Legs are pushing hard. Think of doing a squat and holding it for 3 or 4 minutes and somebody keeps pushing down on you and you have to be on your marks trying not to crash! Downhill skiers are crazy! I hope she is ok.

Besides the fact that this is all so counterproductive. Is imperative all the responsible to convene and find solutions for more safety. Remember the example of formula one . Although at different courses, the track and dynamics of Mikaela's and Alek's crash are eerily similar: both racers landed too far to the left after a downhill right jump, and then were unable to make the following downhill left turn because they were unweighted and off line. I agree with those who wish MS would cease DH. The risk/reward ratio is poor, especially for someone possessing her slalom and GS talent.

On the other hand, it detracts somewhat from a skier's legacy when the career is limited to only technical, or to only speed events. The Mahre Bros., Marcel Hirscher, even Stenmark were a bit compromised by the fact they never, or almost never, attempted downhill events. The greats, and for me they would include Toni Sailer, JC Killy, Schranz, Bobby Cochran, Bode Miller, Vonn, Giardelli, Gustavo Thoeni, and really a host of other multidiscipline skiers (even Billy Kid) - are the real ski heroes. Not the specialists. So I give props, lots of props to MS for tackling a downhill. And believe this -MS and her Mom and her coaches and all of Team Schiffrin Inc. looked very, very hard at the downhill beforehand - and recommended it as a winner for obvious reasons: lots of technical turns and probably not too high speeds. Conditions where MS could excel. Totally agree with your post she was off line.

The biggest and most important accomplishment in Alpine ski racing is the overall Crystal Globe. At this stage of the season it was imperative that she accumulate WC points in several speed events to be reasonably sure. It looks like the Italians are almost out of the running, but Lara Gut is well within striking distance of the overall.

That course was not set properly for that turn. That jump going to the turn is set too far to the left doesn’t give the racers enough distance to correct the long air and rollers into the turn at 55 mph. They should have stop the race, fix it then restart the race. Mikaela amand many good racers were too low off the jump then tried to correct it. Too late for the next turn at that 55 mph speed. Hope her injury is minor of just a strained tendon or muscle. And you wonder how did Lindsey Vonn made it to her record in the most dangerous venue in skiing. Love you Mikaela. Please make a quick recovery and racing soon!

Isn't that a bad read by MS or her coaches? Shouldn't MS have given more respect to that left foot gate on the knoll? Maybe 55 MPH, or maybe more like 45-50 MPH. Doesn't scream "bad set" to me. Have you set courses?

@cycleoflife The only way to stop a race is to cancel it. My take is that they should have moved the second training run to today, instead of cancelling it, and settled for one DH on the weekend. FIS has been really hot to get 45 races in a season, and not adequately considered the effect of the schedule on the athletes.

@@QuicknStraightso taking the correct line or go straight into the fence at speed with no room for mistakes is a well set course then? It is well set in the same way it is fine moving events to one of the most challenging courses in the season resulting in serious injuries of two elite athletes. I am talking about Wengen. FIS is pushing the athletes beyond the limits in favor of good show and respectively big incomes.

@@amandasmith3242 Fair enough - I didn't know what their actual job is. I'd still ask the basic question however. Why don't the people who are CLOSEST to a downed skier go to the skier immediately IRRESPECTIVE of the job? I'm NOT expecting that the first person there would always be a medic but the first person available should go. Call it common sense. Call it basic human decency and concern. Call it whatever you like. It would take NOTHING to have all those with any official position to be told to go check and signal if the skier is conscious or not. You could give the simple command NOT to move the skier if they are unconscious or just let the skier know help is coming if they are conscious. I just find it incredulous that they'd just go past as if nothing had happened.
@amandasmith3242
@amandasmith3242 3 ай бұрын
@@tonywilson4713 Everyone there has their own job to do - that isn't theirs. What has happened in a situation like that is that a call has already gone out over the radio from a gate judge or spotter to the race director to stop the race and call patrol/medics/rescue. All races have safety plans to deal with racer down situations like this. The slip crew knows help is already on the way. More generally: Look at 00:39. A downhill course is usually icy and steep. If someone tries to walk over, they will likely fall and be sliding down the hill. If you don't have the training, and proper equipment, you're far more likely to become another victim or further injure the racer than help.

AJ Hurt, I watched your second run in the WC FIS GS at Are today Mar. 9, 2024 several times. You made a number of mistakes. The most general was that you did not adjust your line higher as the slope steepened. Therefore you tended to be in the wrong position on the gates that were about halfway down or more. This made you skid/brake more. It put you out of position more. Probably as a result, there was one really bad turn sideways after a big skid/braking probably due in part to your too low line in that area. Partly the over skid and almost wipeout at that point was due to your turning sideways on the hill at that point. You want to always keep your upper body headed down the hill. Otherwise you tend to lean into the hill. That makes you lose your ski grip further on the hill. In other words you have to be leaning a bit down the hill with your upper body in order to get a good grip on the snow/ice. This makes your edges cant further away from the hill. That gives you better edge grip with your weight more fully on the edges (you then get say a 45 degree edge angle as opposed to a 20 degree edge angle that you get when you lean into the hill). Almost wiping out cost you a good amount of time. My fourth grade teacher had a saying, "Trifles make perfection, and perfection is no trifle." She was right as always. Best Wishes, David White

can't believe the course workers skied right by her! WTF I've been Ski Inst. and a race coach for 40 yrs and never would have skied past a downed racer like that unless ski patrol was already there and didn't need help.

Someone please explain to me why a clearly injured skier has to limp themselves off the course instead of having a snowmobile there?

Would think a safer barrier would be designed to protect skiers. Other sports have designed more absorbable barriers to reduce or remove injury

The organizers of this course need to go back to the drawing board. Olympic games here in two years, maybe it will be fixed. Shiffrin is a beast!

Arrows should be drawn on the fence to indicate the direction of travel just in case a competitor momentarily loses concentration due to a critical event and may turn in the wrong direction in confusion. This is exactly what you can see in the video. Otherwise, the competitor quickly realizes the mistake, but it is already too late to correct the course. She tried to alleviate the situation with a controlled fall...

Race organizers should have known that it was a dangerous turn. It was a GS turn in a SG event. SMH. And the 2 course officials skiing pass her is unbelievable... are they blind, just don't care or both!?!

Is it just me or did she career into the Boulder just behind the netting. It looks like she hit the net and rolled onto a dark parts of it and then in another shop we saw a huge Rocky outcrop

All these kids in the comments lead me to believe they’ve never been off their phones and actually done any of the stuff they watch. The crash wasn’t that bad, there was zero chance it was fatal, stop over dramatizing things. Typical 2024 youngster.

Praying that Mikaela is not seriously injured. Wish her a fast & full recovery. Not sure why this course is so suspect & in my mind needlessly dangerous. Every year these course designers keep trying to push the envelope. Will a skier have to die to stop this madness. This is NOT enjoyable for me after some 50 yrs. of watching this sport. This daredevil type skiing is so unnecessary to showcase the beauty, intricacy & athletic challenge of a course or to showcase the best skiers. Investigating the course after a serious injury or death is too late. Fix the darn course stop the madness. Not appealing at all.

Given all that crazy knee injuries in DH I wish somebody would come up with technology similar to bike back brace just for the knees. Otherwise competitive skiing can be more dangerous than MMA :((
