A fantastic song from the brilliant Andy Partridge and XTC

Yes, tree of life. Representations of all stages. With XTC people tend to do Dear God. There are tons of their songs that would give you a better feel for them. Like Making Plans for Nigel, Senses Working Overtime, Love on a Farmboy's Wages, Mayor of Simpleton....

Yes, there are plenty of other XTC songs that I like, but this one's my favourite! -M

There was a ton of furor here in the USA when this started getting airplay - the religious right went crazy. Its important to remember that despite all the songs protestations about how he doesnt believe in God and why, the song is in itself a letter *to* god. Fun facts.

But it's still questioning everything about God. Andy is not sentimental about the subject.

Cynical? I don’t think so. It’s brilliantly written, constructed and played . You’re also taking the visuals at face value and Andy Partridge is bravely asking the right questions as uncomfortable as they are. That’s what great rock and roll is about.

Jeez, Louise, forget about the bloody tree.....it's a matephor, concentrate on the words, if you actually wanted to take the time to study them, and their meaning.

THE LYRICS OF THE SONG... REMARKABLE! IT IS INCREDIBLE (UNPLEASANT) WHAT HUMANITY HAS DONE IN THE NAME OF GOD... GREETINGS FROM VENEZUELA

The lyrics of this is vague enough that everyone could relate… even if you’re religious. Each decade I return to this song it is so relevant for many and more reasons.

The woman just makes idiotic comments about the video while completely ignoring the incredibly relevant lyrics.

I thought this might not go down well in the US. You have to remember though, an atheist's position is not that he/she is angry at God. An atheist reserves belief over any God, the premise of the song is directed at the idea that a God could create humans and let them suffer if he/she/it is all powerful and could change anything at anytime.

We're in Canada, so culturally a little less inclined for a song like this bother the public. I love it, myself! -M

I think cynical implies an unwarranted view whereas the lyrics paint an arguably valid point of view.

If you're open-minded about the lyrics, you can look at it in two ways, both of which I believed at different times in my life. When I was young and someone who had faith in God (I was never very religious), I felt it was a song about someone who'd lost faith in God (I feel most Christians do at some point in their lives) and was angrily asking Him why life sucks so much? As I got older and more and more agnostic, I felt it was more an angry rejection of the very concept of a supreme being (which is likely more the intent of the songwriter). You can take it however you will. It's a great song nonetheless...

I always interpreted it in the latter sense, myself. It’s definitely a deeper song than you would think at first - G

I think you both are missing a very important aspect of the song: its format. This song is a prayer… to God. This isn’t someone who has rejected God, but someone grappling with a real crisis of faith.

That is exactly what I thought the song was about when I was younger (as noted in my original comment). Knowing more about the songwriter and the origins of the song, I think my later, current view of the lyrics is more accurate. But you're certainly entitled to your opinion. :)

The two interpretations I get are: The atheist use of 'believe' is literal, while the believer's use is synonymous with 'trust' - "I don't trust you anymore, God."

I think that is an excellent interpretation. - G

As an agnostic (a "recovered" Catholic), I love this song and it brings up valid points (ie. if God made everything in the world, why in addition to the beautiful is there cancer, diseases that maim or kill innocent children?; if "God will provide", why are there "people staving in the street"?). I love the line "People fighting in the street 'cause they can't make opinions meet about God". I've tormented my religious sister with this song a couple times! 😁
