Spot on. He faced Wasim and Waqar, Ambrose and Walsh, Donald and Pollock, McGrath Gillespie and Warne to name just a few. The standard of bowling was much higher during Atherton's career compared to the current era of Test cricket.

Holy shit, you guys are so biased by nostalgia. Whilst the bowling back then was better, the idea that bowlers today aren't even comparable is just bullshit.

He average 40 in first-class cricket where he didn't face all the big names day in and day out. Warne and McGrath seriously got into Atherton's head, and he played Aus the most. His average against them was less than 30 - hence why his average was so low. Take that out, you got a plus 40 average, just.

@@ryanwebb5082 Don't tell them that. By there logic every player this generation sucks and wouldn't make into the Bangladesh test team of the early 2000s.

Come to know about his innings through cricket magazine Cricket Samrat when I was in class 9, huge fan of him, now I am watching KL Rahul in IPL 15.10.2020 against RCB, time keeps on changing man
