No one in rap has ever said some shit on a mic LIKE Nas has. For real it’s gems on EVERY album. Nas is a real musician. Street shit, life shit, politics, family, neglected children, music industry, friendship, fake friends, love, hate, thoughts that people scared to say, etc etc etc......!!!!.....Nas is forever tha goat.

One is the people's champion (Nas) reflecting on life with something deep to say and the other is the hustler's champion (Jay Z) bragging about having money from selling drugs in the past, how many women he's slept with, and being better than every rapper you've heard about. It's a matter of content vs bravado. Nas wins everytime.

Jay is my second favorite rapper ever (Nas is my favorite), but It was written is a contender for the greatest rap album ever made. Lyrically, I don't think anything compares to it, and the production is ridiculous.

Jay is the best @ WHAT HE DOES, Nas is the best @ WHAT HE DOES. I prefer what Nas does to what Jay does. I like substance, creativity and improvisation. For me Jay is more concerned with reinforcing a self created identity, selling records and staying in character than expressing genuine thoughts on life, society and the human condition. He's an entertainer first and foremost. Nas has an artistic voice that spans the gamut of experiences and isn't constrained by keeping up appearances.

I'm not mad at that assessment but I see it different. Jay rap about his own life and Nas rap about other people's life. Shit is like the autobiography of Malcolm X vs Lord of the Rings. Na y'all wrong about Jay being the first too make BIG change up his style💯 BIG had to literally take his verse for "Notorious Thugs" home & rewrite the whole thing 3 times in a row after Bone killed all three of all they verses while they was literally faded asf on weed & Henny & passed out in BIGs studio & Puff woke them all up & they all jumped in the booth& killed all they verses in one single take , all three of them💯 Oml , that was when Biggie had to really really have to step up his flow & cadence not just his pen game anymore & plus he had to speed it up just to compete with Bones style of rapping & theyverses on that track especially Bizzy & Krayzies verses on that track!!!! I Love The Dough was recorded afterwards 💯

Jay said "get your CDs out let's go song for song" but that doesn't mean comparing albums 5 years apart. I understand if the point is to prove that It Was Written is a great album, then I understand. It's my favorite Nas album actually. But it should be understood that these battles don't prove what album is better. It's like a Verzus, it's based on match ups. One factor people are missing is that Blueprint was more about Jay not being happy with the SOUND of rap at the time so he put out the album full of soul beats as a counter to the other popular sounds at the time in hip hop. That was strategic because Jay knew the power of his influence musically and then after Blueprint you hear soul samples all over the place in hip hop rather then club based records that was dominating in 2000. This is not an accident. American Gangster was Jay proving he's the GOAT end of story.

Blueprint was dope, & it didn't get as much shine as it should have because 9/11 happened the day it came out. Am I the only one that feels like 'Renegade' didn't belong on that album? Don't get me wrong, it's a great song, but it doesn't have the same vibe as the rest of the album. You have all these really soulful upbeat songs with motown samples & all of a sudden you have this dark, sinister, synth-heavy song, it just always seemed out of place to me.
