I loved Midnight mass. But more for my religious trauma. I am so tired of disabled villians in my horror. The ableism inherent in the " fat disabled psycho with developmental delays and bloodlust" really bothers me. I like the trope of disabled women fighting back and winning though.

This was really excellent. I love Flanagan's work, but it's good to be reminded that me loving something doesn't mean it's without fault. And that I definitely shouldn't brace myself to take that criticism personally, but I think we're all a bit like that. I really appreciate how you talk about these things: you have a way of recognising issues in the parts without condemning the whole. It's a real skill to navigate all that

another certified erica mones banger!!! what a great dissection of the flanagan-verse, and I love the nuance you bring to the table every time you make a video.

Talking of horror and ableism (recent, because it's a long standing trope), Ari Aster hasn't had a good track record with Hereditary and Midsommar. Haven't seen Beau is Afraid yet to know if he's still using disability/otherness as a lazy shorthand for horror.

Mad Max Fury Road also had problems with ableism where the bad guys were all disabled

Where they? I haven't watched it in years. That sucks. I remember the head jerk had that breathing thing. I'll keep an eye out on rewatch. I actually came into the comments to talk about Furiosa and how it didn't make it a plot point. Instead, she's still a badass who kept on going. Because that's what people do when they aren't seen as broken and given the space to.

Also revisiting the game Haunting Ground and how the character Debilitas was handled distastefully
@TheKaiserTia11 ай бұрын
I've seen people trying to defend Haunting Ground from a pulp/giallo perspective, but it's a game that was made during the peak boob jiggle physics era by male developers for a mostly male audience. If its sexual politics are so bad, then of course the other themes and characters of the game are going to be badly dealt with.
