This is a good shouting match, but nothing beats the gambling tirade Big Mike went on after the now disgraced NY AG banned sports gambling in the state and a caller told Mike fantasy sports isn't gambling.

I am a former high school and collegiate pitcher and long time coach. I absolutely can't stand the current approach to baseball- pitch counts, using 4-5 pitchers every game, and now this latest proposed idiocy. It's not "thinking outside the box", its asinine reinvention of the wheel. Any starter worth his salt would soundly reject this nonsense.

Pitching mechanics are clearly a problem. Watch guys who pitched 300 innings in a given season and compare how he winds up and releases. So much torque in the arm/shoulder/back nowadays and not using their legs and hips to transfer momentum. Nolan Ryan talked a lot about getting velocity from his hip transfer

@@JacobStevens13 I think pitchers and position players alike do way TOO MUCH weight training during the season. There is no need and potential for injury by just doing that. If you want to use light weights during the season, fine. But heavy lifting should be relegated to the offseason.

@@JKLeScH777 The people making these decisions DID NOT all play further than college ball, and having been a pro player does not automatically qualify one as a solid coach or strategist. Many of the decisions that are being made in today's current game suck big time- and yes, complaining by enough people and continued lousy league attendance will indeed enact change. Wise up!

Go back & watch 1990 NLCS Game 6 Pirates Reds, the Reds had The Nasty Boys a great all time pen. In order to counter it Jim Leyland started Pirates closer Ted Power to try & get a early lead then Zane Smith his normal starter came in later. Reds won 2-1 Pirates scored 1 run on 1 hit.

There are 8 more innings after the 1st inning. You need your relievers to be available at the end of the game, typically the last three innings. We all know this. The opener is a horrible addition to pitching in baseball.

While I strongly disagree with the caller as I pointed out in my previous post Jim Leyland tried it in 1990 against the Reds it didn’t work however I’m totally on Francescas side cause it’s stupid to use a reliver pitcher in the first inning Francesca is right a closer is brought in to end the game. The early innings nobody wants to cause nobody has any idea what’s gonna happen early!!!!

It’s simple why teams do it. Use your best closer on the top of the lineup to start the game. Bring in your starter next innning. Best hitters on oppppsing team probably won’t see the starter for the first time until the 3rd inning. Won’t get a chance to see him potentially a 3rd time (4th time through the order). It’s smart and it works, particularly for a team like Tampa that tries to change up arm angels of pitchers as much as possible to keep the hitters uncomfortable

@@patrickgray5633 yes that team. You’re one of those people that just need to say something for the sake of saying something. One example of their approach not working is not a counter-argument to anything. “Having a high payroll is pretty important if you wanna be competitive” “Tell that to the Yankees and dodgers who have 1 World Series combined in the last 11 years 🤪🤪”

The caller might be correct about the stat, but has nothing to do with Mike's Point. You need your closer / relieving pictures for when your starters get into trouble or you need to win the game. It's very hard to lose a game in the first inning.
