Have a quick story about Ike. 2005 Bassmasters Classic at Pittsburgh. The anglers were positioned on one side of the major point in Pittsburgh where the 3 rivers connect. Ike came around the point to line up and became visible to the crowd for the first time and the crowd just erupted and went absolutely crazy. He was a rock star down there that day.

We should all remember the father of structure fishing Buck Perry, whose primary statement was deep water is the home of the fish, Buck said deep water is 10 ft and deeper and also said that all fishing successes or failures come back to depth and speed control and location. A beginning angler would be wise to read and reread Buck Perrys' book it would save them years of frustration.

Very good interaction and another great interview. Just when you think it can't get any better, you pop off with a killer episode like this! A few years ago Ike was kicking around the idea of retiring. I told him, in print, that while I personally don't care for his antics on the water, the hollering and such, it'd be a shame for him to retire because even though I don't care for the hollering the sport needs him to stay in it. He is responsible for attracting scores of young people to the sport of not just bass fishing but fishing in general. I do think that Ike is a once in a generation type of angler that really connects with more people than people care to admit. Here's to Ike and the hopes that he continues to represent and attract new blood to the sport.

I happened to tune in for twenty minutes to Pete Gluszek, an eastern coast angler who had fifteen years of touring professional career under his belt. And Pete tried to explain to Matt Pangrac about the origins of his organization called the Bass University. It was interesting, because Pete went into the aspects of things to do with economics. Matt also mentioned that in that year that Pete was talking about. Matt was only just starting his journey on his working life, and Pete was having to deal with the first significant 'bump in the road' in his working life. It reminded me though of one thing, and about where fishing as a recreational sport has originated from period. Forget 2008, just think about what happened in Ireland. At a time, I remember saying to Bradley Hallman when native Americans from the State of Oklahoma (even before it was a State), had sent money to help out the starving poor folk across the Atlantic ocean. Some of the tribes in Oklahoma sent money to Ireland.

There was a small place that's quite forgotten about now (Siemens electrical company were invited in, in the 1930's and they created the first electrical power station in Ireland at that time). Where they damed and diverted the river Shannon. There was a film that Robert Mitchum once acted in, about the Second World War in Italy (that's approximately at the time that those large mouth bass fish somehow made their way from America to Italy). It's a 1968 film called 'Anzio' that was adapted for screen by HAL Craig, based on a 1961 novel by Wynford Vaughan-Thomas. And on the script writing team for that film were guys who grew up on the banks of the Castleconnel river in Ireland. Immediately prior to when the dam construction work happened. That's just a side mention. What few understand is one of the first major fishing tackle companies established in the mid nineteenth century. Was started by the Enright family in Castleconnel. A year after 'Black 47', the height of the Irish potato famine. And one son of the Enrights was still competing in casting tournaments in New York. By the time that Theodore Roosevelt was in office. And what we also understand now from history. Is that much of the habitat and environment that existed in the unexplored western States. We wouldn't really have that much of it now, but for the attempts of Theodore and some others. At that time. A lot of habitat restoration projects started before the Depression years and continued during and long after it. Fishing is something that folks have turned to frequently, during hard times.

Recently I listened to Episode 533 of the Wet Fly Swing podcast from Oregon State, in which Trey Combs tried to explain part of that history. It was a lot to do with the hat-making craze of Queen Victoria's era. She was a Queen who began her reign in the middle part of the nineteenth century, and continue to rule until the end of it. It was a time in which Britain had control over the oceans. The sad part being that it materialized into trade in feathers. To make those fancy hats that folks wore to parties, and going horse racing. Bird populations, habitats and whole forests were cleaned out. Such was the demand for fashion raw materials. And part of that supply chain came through Ireland back then. And the early fishing lure industry spun out of that during the second half of the nineteenth century. A lot of the first fishing lures were made by Irish designers who worked as guides on those Atlantic salmon and trout rivers. Which were really like Florida at the time. It was where folks went to have holidays and party.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 Жыл бұрын
The odd thing is, long after that tradition in Scotland and Ireland had all but disappeared. In the middle of the twentieth century in Canada. Trey explained that Canadians rediscovered that fishing method, which had come from the British Isles. The Canadians revived it, partly for reasons of nostalgia and wanting to believe they were in homeland. It led Trey's publication of his steelhead book. Which people now realize, was a snapshot of a generation of anglers who have now gone. Apart from that book from 1971 they are forgotten about. The story of the western States to do with rivers, water, urban expansion and native salmonoids. Is a story of two halves. On the one hand there are world-class smallmouth rivers like the Columbia and others. And also the western reservoirs into which the Florida bass were transplanted there at one stage. Some today question why the fish and game authorities, have ceased feeding the large mouth bass with rainbow trout (a phrase that has been used to describe rainbow trout from a large mouth bass point of view, is they arelike floating candy bars). Michael Iaconelli was present at the time, when the anglers there realized. That saltwater swimbaits could work for large mouth bass in those reservoirs out west. And so started the swimbait fishing thing.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 Жыл бұрын
The reality is, that one cannot underestimate nostalgia. The Americans who were serving in the military in Italy were so homestick for Florida too. That they imported the actual fish, literally. They didn't only try to copy the tackle or anything. Or where hats like Sherlock Holmes would wear and smoke pipes. The Americans in Italy in the forties or fifties went straight into bio-hacking. The story of fishing in the western States in America. Is a story about how native migratory rainbow trout species habitat overlapped with the new water infrastructure projects and ecosystem transformation (where biologists tried to turn California into Florida from a bass angling point of view). What you find is fishing always is about times and places where different angling traditions overlap. The one that Trey Combs talked about. Where steelhead anglers want to pretend they are in mid nineteenth century Scotland. And the anglers of Michael Iaconelli's generation, who are using saltwater swimbaits. And pretending they are on Lake Okeechobee. Even though they are not.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 Жыл бұрын
The oddest thing I understood, about the intersections of these different angling traditions and stories. Bradley Hallman went to Lake Okeechobee in 2023 to fish an Elites event. And the lure that anglers in Florida like to throw is called a golden roach. Bradley was clueless as to why a bait would be called that (roaches in America mean something totally different, to what it meant when in started out). The golden roach was a small course fish, sort of like a bluegill. That anglers on the Blackwater in county Cork used to throw for migrating Atlantic salmon there. Until a lot of their live bait escaped and decided to take up residence on the river Blackwater. It's an imported species of bait fish, and that's where that name of lures in Florida comes from. The thing to understand is that Ireland bred a lot of horses for Britain during the heights of it's empire. Ireland was like Kentucky is to America. And wherever there's horses there's racing. Wherever there's racing there's a need for finery, gambling, showing off and yes. Hats. And it was that supply chain or demand for fine hats in the nineteenth century. Where the men folk in places like Cork. Said to those hat makers, would you be able to make me a fly that imitates a golden roach? And hence the Atlantic salmon fly making trade spun out of the other one. The hat making. The end.

There is a viable way to restructure professional Bass orgs to the benefit of the angler- No cash entries, No cash prizes by the orgs themselves. Prizes whether cash or boats, trucks, electronics, etc etc, to be awarded by the sponsors too the anglers. These sponsors will support the org through advertising costs that will pay all the costs salaries and returns to the investors, via live and TV broadcasting. Anglers will form a union where they will pay a due's (a set small fee of several hundred dollars for every event on the schedule. This will cover the cost of running the events. Everything will be regionally structured to limit travel expense (10 or 12 regions), then a national classic. Now, anglers are awarded based on talent, sportsmanship etc without the influence of gaming or attachment to sponsors. After all, why should anyone be awarded via social media skills. Why should any angler lie about what lure won the event for them. Why should the most talented anglers out there be denied a chance of accomplishment because the sport is way to expensive to play the game. imo

He’s one of those quite type that ya gotta watch because he could go postal at any moment!Someone needs to sit him down for a reality talk like my family did me back 30yrs ago.When I seen I wasn’t going to play college ball anymore.Grades ugh!I had to get a job because I lost scholarship an my family couldn’t afford to pay it.He needs that talk.Give it to him Luke!You know as well as anyone else in this industry.Great show we love some Ike!👍🏼👍🏼

The legends of the spot knew this. Back in the day, Jimmy, Bill, Roland, and Hank spent more time pushing spinner baits and making corny Sunday morning shows. This was all designed to sell products.

44:47 nobody should design and put their name on lure without getting a % of sales and any company that doesn’t automatically give that to the angler shouldn’t be allowed in the sport

Every time the podcast starts I sing along as loud as I possibly can and pisses my wife off cause it comes out of no where and scares the shit out of her. It’s great. I need to record the look on her face. Most of the time she is on the phone working and has to apologize. F’n fantastic.

Fouts sounds like a whiny child. He chose to become a pro fisherman. When he whines about having to GUIDE on his time off just sounds absurd to me. Im a charter owner, 4 boats, saltwater (tuna, striper, and almost any other pelagic fiss and some shark, all catch and release. I couldn’t be happier to run a business to be able to afford to compete in our tournament trails on a new boat. Crying because fishing is hard work.

Love how no one will drop names...for self is these peoples problems. At some point you all sacrifice for the next generation of fisherman but you all in it don't know anything about the greatest generation.

So Major League Baseball has the MLBPA and the goal of the MLBPA is to create fair pay for the players. If they don’t get what they want, then they strike and don’t play. Thus taking money out of the owner’s hands. The only way to change it into the angler’s favor or benefit is for the Angler’s not to fish, or show up at a tournament. But you need the balls to go on strike. If social media is so powerful for sponsors, then fishing tournament’s shouldn’t matter as much as so many have said.

Without the balls to do it… it will never matter. That’s for sure. Has to start there and that’s easier said than done

Was wondering though...what was wrong with Ike at the end of the season? He seemed perturbed over something the last couple of weigh ins that I saw him. He would just walk off the stage with a sour look without saying anything.

Probably just annoyed and burnt out from having a mediocre season. He had a few good finishes but he had a lot of 40+ finishes and I’m sure he isn’t happy with those. Hard to get it turned around after weeks of that in a row without some time off

Said it before. If the Anglers dont stand together and strike for a year or two. And stand fast. Its not gonna be better. And I believe like Ike said sponsors would be for it. SMH.
