Mike Love on Meditation

Journalist Dan Rather interviews Beach Boys member Mike Love on AXS TV. This excerpt (from the series, "The Big Interview with Dan Rather") is when Love speaks about what led him to practice meditation. He describes what drew him to meditation and to TM, which he still practices today.

How is Mike Love wanting credit and royalties for songs he co-wrote any different than Levon Helm wanting the same from Robbie Robertson? Helm was given a lot of respect for speaking up(as he should have), Mike is vilified. How is Mike any different than Mick Taylor who has fought for writing credits for songs he wrote when he was in the Stones that Jagger and Richards took full credit for. Mike has apologized repeatedly fucking up at the Beach Boys induction into the rock and roll hall of fame. How much contrition does the guy need to show before people let it go? John Lennon(I love his music) is one of the biggest jerks in rock music history(ask Julian)... he is worshiped as saint. Sure Mike has said and done some things that I have not liked and I am a Wilson Brothers fan first and foremost but without think of how many songs we never would have heard. He wrote the lyrics to Pacific Ocean Blue, the song from the album of the same name of the Dennis Wilson masterpiece for fuck sake. I don't like how he tours using the name The Beach Boys...that band he has is Love/Johnston and friends and should be called that. I don't like how he seemed to steer a vibrant and progressive, creative early 70's Beach Boys into a touring oldies band but he isn't the demon he has been made out to be. I don't like his inability to acknowledge Dennis as a great musician and song writer. A dick at times(who isn't),sure....evil, no.

He has the license to tour as The Beach Boys and that was approved by the majority of Brother Records share holders so that's not going to change, but Brian and the others do get paid for it. We may not like it, but the best we can do is make fun of his bunch as a tribute band and not go to the concerts. Mike is going to milk the name and play the oldies as long as he can. I would suggest you read up a little more on his relationship with Brian and the other members and to what extent he may have contributed to the songs he claims to be part of, as a writer. There are a number of cases where the contributions are dubious, but Brian appears to have just given up to avoid further litigation. It is a twisted and torturous set of events.
