WAAF Boston – The Only Station That Really Rocks!

Dream Theater's Mike Mangini is arguably one of the greatest drummers in all of rock. So when he stopped by the WAAF studio to hang with Mistress Carrie, they talked about the new album, life as a proud masshole, and putting his drumming skills to the test with wooden spoons and pots and pans!

I first saw Mangini live in 2002 playing with Dream Theater. I was convinced of his talent then and still am today.

No, 2002. During the 6DOIT tour. The band was in Boston and Mangini played with them because he lives there.

She's a pro at interrupting the answer to her own question. It's also really great interviewing when the subject has to be the one to keep the interview on track. And the host's mic is always significantly louder/more compressed than the guest. Superb!

First saw Mike perform nearly 20 years ago and was absolutely blown away. Though I had no idea who he was at the time, it was obvious that he'd eventually have a significant impact on the music industry. When I learned that he was chosen as the new Dream Theater drummer over a decade later, I wasn't surprised.

Proclaiming the "best" of anything is really a fools game. Everyone has their own thing and no one really has EVERYTHING! That being said; from a mechanical standpoint it is very hard to point to any drummer of all time that is more accomplished than Mike Mangini! Speed, articulation, independence, dynamic balance, timing, command of polyrhythms, command of odd times, and flash... Mangini!

I'll be honest, I prefer Portnoy as DT's drummer because while not as technical, he had a sort of creativity that really fit the music. That being said though, Mangini would probably be the musician of any rock/metal band I'd want to go out and have a beer/coffee with and just hang out with. He is the definition of good vibes and you can tell he's just a pure, kind hearted person. That quality is rare in people in general, let alone musicians. The fact that someone with his talent has that personality, while most geniuses are neurotic/narcissistic arseholes? That's a once in a lifetime person right there.

Extremely nice guy Over the Top drummer an outstanding teacher that put his students before himself. As you can imagine just listening to this interview really cool dude, not self-absorbed the way the old drummer came off. I don't really know either drummer. but after watching a few interviews with both guys just my opinion

Why he cant speak normally? Too much acting. Haha Jokes apart. No doubt he plays really fast but what I feel is whatever he plays doesn't come from inside like one god gifted drummer has. Software can play fast, right? Whatever he plays comes from paper. He writes in paper mug up and plays. On the other hand what Mike Portnoy plays sweet ,makes me happy.
